The BenRiach 16 Sauternes is a bit less sharp on the nose and on the palate compared to the 15y old.Concerning price/performance ratio: 7/10
    • Nose
Vanilla, sautern wine cask wood, apricot, honey, yellow fruits.
    • Taste
Fruits, apricot, toffee, pepper, dried red fruits, honey.
    • Finish
Medium. Grapes, citrus, unripe apricots, dried red fruits. Getting dry.

  7. Mannheimer scored this whisky 85 points Expert Junior

The Glenmorangie Nectar d'Or is mediocre, the Arran Sauternes finish too, the Glendronach Sauternes finish is a disaster, among the Sauternes-finished Malts for me this Benriach is by far the front runner.
    • Nose
Sweet vanilla, caramel first. Then dark fruits appear (err, no sherry ?!) like raisins. Then head for juicy peaches, apple compote, or apple cake from the oven with a touch of marzipan.
After opening you get as expected the sweet notes of the Sauternes barrel and bam! Flowers, white wine, overripe white / yellow fruit (Botrytis!). Slight alcoholic pungency, otherwise delivers the sweetness of the wine barrel.
    • Taste
Not too sweet start, peppery oak, a lot of vanilla, honey, crass melon notes and again a hint of raisins and toffee.
    • Finish
Mittellamg until long with caramel, toffee.

Overall, a nice try to spend more time, won a lot from the second and third sip, Sauternes but just does not fit so Benriach I think
    • Nose
Interesting, very own fruitiness, apple, peach, white grapes, hints of pineapple, sweet & fine maltiness, light stinging of the alcohol with a metallic note (as I have it with almost every white wine finish), honey, florality, vanilla, rosemary
    • Taste
Raisins, light grapes, malt, pepper, honey, ginger, apricot, vanilla, apple and plum on the second sip, but raisins continue to dominate for me
    • Finish
      Medium length, plum, oak, malt

    • Nose
    • Finish
      Mittellang

  19. wisekyofcourse scored this whisky 84 points Connoisseur

on the nose, cream, dried fruits and vanilla
in the mouth, always orange fruits, cream ... chocolate, in addition to the dominant spices
not the taste of Sauternes, but diffuse flavors that remain in the mouth, with a sweetness under the tongue .... very subjective I agree!

This is an awful whisky, you would be better off buying a good blend which is also cheaper. The nose is ok but that is the only good thing I have to say about it.

    • Nose

    • Taste
Full of flavor, nicely rounded. Indeed tropical fruit from the Sauternes barrel (a white dessert wine).
    • Finish
      Medium finish.

Nose expressive on the nut then peaches and marzipan. always stick on the nut, the fruit and a well integrated wood, good texture. Long final. Good whisky and finish well done but I can not find the markers of Sauternes.

    a very tasty malt
very pleasant mouthfeel, you still want to take another sip
the honey sweetness and the grapes dominate this whisky
the oak in the finish brings extra depth
not the most complex whisky, but the flavors it has to offer are clear, very harmonious
    • Nose
at first a little alcoholic in the nose; you have to give him a few minutes to breathe
      a slight alcoholic note remains
Sweet grapes, apricot, vanilla and a lot of honey
There's another spicy component in the back
the sweetness and the grapes are getting stronger
    • Taste
very mild and gentle with an oily mouthfeel
a lot of honey and grapes and honey again
      Oak

BenRiach 16 years Sauternes Wood Finish, 46% alc.
Original bottling, Region: Speyside, Scotland. Limited to 1686 bottles.

Nose: A great buttery and fatty sweetness rising immediately, sultanas, honeydew melon and dates. Beautiful cereal notes develop, as well as figs, raisins and the sweet sauternes. In the background, a mild spiciness from the oak wood.
    ...
Palate: Sweet but also spicy, the oak comes out well and powerfully, behind it come back the aromas of the nose.

Finish: Beautifully long with a lot of oak, warming and fine. Remains in memory.

Conclusion: There are many finishes that have gone wrong, this one is one of the successful. I like it.

    • Nose
right at the beginning beautiful wine notes, raisins, cream sweet, overall a very sweet impression
    • Taste
Sweet onset, the Sauternes barrels are clearly noticeable, honeydew melon, mango, green banana, then citrus fruits and slight bitterness of the oak
    • Finish
Warm finish, the slight bitterness remains, but is not unpleasant, a very slightly peppery note resonates

Of my previously tried Sauternes finishes (Glenmorangie Nectar d'Or 12 + 15), this one is the best. In addition to the soft, creamy-sweet notes you get here still a nice spicy counterpoint. In addition, the flavors are stronger here. All this makes it quite complex overall.
    • Nose
sweet, a lot of creamy white chocolate, caramel with some vanilla, poached peach, few sultanas, sweet must of light grapes, after some time in the glass, the aromas merge into eggnog
    • Taste
slightly oily soft mouthfeel, sweet, mango, white peach, little acidity like in pineapple, then spicy in the direction of heavily roasted hazelnut, the oak comes through well
    • Finish
medium to long, sweet bright fruits, shortly again the eggnog, then beats spicy, some red pepper, bitterness of oak and burnt almonds which is accompanied at the end with a touch of sweet white chocolate

A perfect combination of ex-bourbon casks (vanilla, caramel, smooth american oak) and ex-sauternes casks (aromatic fruits, heavy sweetness, spicy eruopean oak). Just perfectly balanced. Exceptional whisky!

One of my favorite Sauternes finishes and also one of the best whiskys out of the Benriach wood-finish range.

  39. Bishlouk scored this whisky 87 points Connoisseur

I've been looking for a Sauternes finish for a long time (it was one of my "Grail quests"), and this BenRiach turned out to be the one that best matched my preferences. I had previously tasted the Glenmorrangie 12 year old Golden Nectar and the 14 year old Glendronach Sauternes. I hated the Golden Nectar and the Glendronach left me with marble. Suffice to say that I (almost) jumped for joy when I tasted this BenRiach. There is no picture, it's the best Sauternes finish I've drunk; I also set my sights on a bottle. Attention is a very personal appreciation, I know people who prefer the Golden Nectar and others the Glendronach.
    • Nose
Iodine / sweet is the first impression that jumps to the nostrils. It looks good, I like iodine. White grapes, cooked pear, this thin layer of spray that persists. Behind me I can smell wood and summer flowers.
    • Taste
Sweet sweetness and a fairly strong presence of wood. A slight iodine smoke is felt, as well as a mixture of fruits (apricot, lemon, apple). It's good, there is nothing to add.
    • Finish
Average. The wood dries the throat, then sweet vinous notes (the most obvious "paw" of this Sauternes finish?) Go back in the nose.

    Tasting Notes by SCOMA :

    Nose: sultanas, figs, butterscotch.

Palate: Rich sweet Sauternes notes married with tropical fruits, melons, toffee, sultanas and butterscotch.Comment: Matured according to traditional style in American bourbon barrels, this whisky then stored in Sauternes wine casks, which come from the Bordeaux region of France.

  41. Ivynor scored this whisky 84 points Expert Senior

A good whisky, simple and sweet, slightly greedy, even if the Sauternes is not demonstrative.
    • Nose
We continue the route of "Sauternes Finish", in search of the supreme spirit "Yquem". Is there?
No Sauternes in the nose, but more the young speyside character, with green fruits, lots of wood and some notes of spices.
    • Taste
The mouth is quite melted, caramelized. The whole is quite creamy with a little greenness.
    • Finish
Sweet and long, on sugar, wood, and some spicy spikes (cinnamon, clove).

  42. Ikkakumon scored this whisky 84 points Expert Senior

Very good whisky, but that's not my favorite expression at BenRiach.
    • Nose
The nose is a little discreet. Many fruits (apples, pears, apricots), honey, vanilla, slight hints of sweet spices.
    • Taste
Mouth powerful enough, lots of spices (pepper, sweet pepper, clove, nutmeg), oak, yellow fruits, vanilla.
    • Finish
Medium and woody, pepper and a little smoke.

  43. HunterRomario scored this whisky 83 points Expert Senior

This whisky has a lot of original expression, I like to try it, and I think it would be much more than just one sample to be greeted with this little piece, it would probably be worth some point.
    • Nose
It takes a little time, it's not a nose, but you need to look a bit, find figs, dessert white wine, raisins.
    • Taste
Sweet botrytic wine from Sauternes is very popular here, dominated by taste.
    • Finish
The flavor is rather short, but cool.

  44. Igor scored this whisky 85 points Expert Senior

An appropriate companion for the leisure on a sunny day. Sip it, do not rush it, make no haste. And you'll notice how the palette of flavours alters little by little.
    • Nose
White/yellow fruits, vanilla flower, honey, grassland, wheat, dried hay, smell of farmyard, field flowers (oxeye daisy), banana skin. Some woody notes there, oak/white wine barrique, wood shavings, and dried strawberries.
    • Taste
Almond, pistachio nuts?, peppery (lightly), warming, punchy, herbal potion/camomile tea, wine (dry sherry) note, marshmallow, Turkish delight, apricots, grapy, bitter cherry plum. Pretty strong, at least feels stronger than 46% ABV.
    • Finish
Not too long. Chocolate, spice (coriander?), chicory, saltiness (pickle/marinade), wood tannins, caramel, gummies (jelly sweets), marmalade, salted peanuts.

  45. markjedi1 scored this whisky 81 points Connoisseur

I had an Edradour, Tullibardine and GlenDronach with a Sauternes finish before. My favourite remains the GlenDronach, with this BenRiach and the Tullibardine in close pursuit. But I remember enjoying it more last summer. I guess it just is not the season for this kind of dram right now.
    • Nose
Very fruity nose with apple, pear and melon, but also slightly tropical. Pineapple, maybe? The whole is sprinkled with cinnamon.
    • Taste
It is creamy on the palate and very spicy (white pepper and nutmeg). Very sweet on vanilla and fruit. Apart from the white fruit from the nose, I also get peach, Indian fig and apricots.
    • Finish
The finish is rather short, but pleasantly sweet and grainy.

  46. MacMenM scored this whisky 87 points Expert Senior

nice dram, perfect for the summer, somewhere in Frande
    • Nose
lots of vanilla, peaches, abricots, some pears
    • Taste
      fruity, lots of spices, pepperish
    • Finish
short, really dominated bu the wine

  47. Feusi scored this whisky 85 points Connoisseur

Really a marvelous whisky, vanilla fudge with dried apricots, nice and easy to drink. A dram that works also for non whisky drinkers. Sweet and mellow with a pleasant colour.

  48. hsmithjr scored this whisky 79 points Connoisseur

These finished whiskys by BenRiach are not an improvement over the standard range.
    • Nose
Almonds and cashews. Pear juice. Crust of apple pie. Cereal. Rich dessert wine.
    • Taste
Spicy.  Vanilla, oak and sweet cookies. Sherry? Grain. Hints of canned peaches.
    • Finish
      Smoke. Black pepper. Medium length.
