Commonly sweet, complex and yet easy to enjoy. Great dram.
    • Nose
Mouthwatering. From the beginning "Werther's real" (creamy toffee), dark fruit, sherry, honey and syrup. Behind it overrun apples, a lot of caramel and a hint of oak and leather. A hint of cinnamon and clove.
    • Taste
Creamy creamy. Again toffee, vanilla, caramel, sherry and a lot of sweet honey. Floral touches combine with caramelized fruits, behind them milk chocolate and coffee, a little cinnamon remains.
    • Finish
Very long, milk chocolate, fruit, honey, some oak.

Glengoyne 21yo. Consumed at Scotia Bar, Glasgow on three occasions during my short time in Scotland in early 2019, due to feeling that £6.80 for a 35ml dram was quite the bargain (at least comparatively - I have mostly refused to pay the prices charged for whisky in London pubs and bars - their landlords seeming to prefer to keep the whisky on the shelf untouched). First fill sherry for 21 years. Unsurprisingly this therefore has a lovely intense sherried aroma - huge on the fruitcake, raisin, some marzipan, a touch of paint ... huge huge sherry. Taste is again sherry and salt, oak, breathy wood, integrated sherry character, grapey for sure, huge fruitcake with a long woody finish. This is really quite tasty 3.7/88

I used to hate this malt when i first opened it. Being a first-filled distillate, it was unbalanced and big on sherry, like soy sauce big. After some time, the sherry didn't go away. Only some fruits pop up. Some mossiness from old wood as well.
Very uninviting, tbh. Taste and finish were good tho. This put me away from sherry monster for quite some time.

Months after the first tasting, i gave it another go....

Such Complexity! The nuance of the soy sauce went away. Sherry merged well with other fruits, orange and figs, accompanied with the good old mossy attic. Black coffee, dark fruits you name it.

Giving it even more time. Incense and sandelwood (loved it!), grape skin, almond, coffee, vanilla. Taste: Caramelised apple, toffee, chocolate, sherry. Finish: Medium, grape, oak.

Patience rewards you well. Nosing was phenomenal. Taste and finish were lacking. Imagin it was unchillfiltered and in higher strength!

Liked this one, though it did get drier in the finish.

Have to say that I was disappointed. Glengoyne is an excellent distillery that I think will have to able to do better than this in the peak-malt of their age stated core-range. Tasted in a Goyne vertical and the expression is propably the 2012 version.
    • Nose
A strong but surprisingly young sherry: tarty winy notes and rowan-candy. From thereunder the distillate graininess and cereal-muesli. Some honey but this is actually quite dryish though some raisiny notes. A bit thin and lacking in the round complexity one could expect for the age.
    • Taste
Really quite tarty, dry and bitterish. Raisin, figs and dates are there allright but the dominance is also here on rather young than old sherry: rowan-candy and not very pleasant tarty wine. The sweetness there is to be found is rather on dark syrup. I do not seem to find the pleasant grainy side easily...
    • Finish
      Young sherry, shortish.

N: opens on notes halfway between the meat and a wet cellar, in this sense paying duty to the time spent in cask (a bit 'old', of wet wood, but in a positive way, assuming that all this has a sense). Quickly, however, it opens up and leaves room for a wide range of aromas typical of the so sherried malts: hazelnut, sweet chocolate (dai, chocolate with hazelnuts); fruit, in particular the cherry emerges in the range of red fruits, perhaps even banana at times. Liqueur, sweet, elegant. Spicy notes, in particular - it seems - of nutmeg. P: immediately a good body; it is very juicy and sweet, with berries and chocolate (not dark); sweet citrus notes, perhaps chinotto; rusks, toffee, sometimes. It seems perfectly balanced, between the fruity sweetness that comes from the combination of sherry and malt and the bitterness of wood, which never rises and gives this whisky a certain nobility. Very good, sometimes the desire to dissect it and would only drink it and enjoy it ... F: mon cheri. A lot of cherry, clear, and lots of chocolate (which now turns decisively towards the fondant); wood makes itself felt, but without disturbing, deliciously. It is not very long but it is really good. This 21 year old is perhaps the ideal sherried whisky: full bodied, elegant, well balanced, with a discrete complexity, optimally divided between fruit, chocolate, wood and spicy notes that emerge here and there. The perfect Christmas present? http://whiskyfacile.com/2011/12/11/glengoyne-21-yo-sherry-matured-ob-43/
