Whisky Reviews for Bowmore 1989 MBl

5 users have left a review for this whisky and scored it an average of 85.00 points

Nose: Gentle peat with some carbolic soap. Candy. A certain malty sweetness too. Some brine too, and seaweed. Islay on a tray, but quite mellow. nice.

Palate: A lot of smoke here than i had anticipated based on the subdued nose. continuing with pepper, Sweet malt, Banana peel and ginger powder.

Finish: long. smoky. Savoury and Spicy.

A very enjoyable and smooth islay, could have been a bit nicer at CS as I thought, but very enjoyable too at this level too. At 85 EUR it’s not cheap certainly for the reduced ABV, but also not overpriced. A solid dram.

    • Nose
Soft Charcoal smoke, vanilla, light coastal nose with grass and herbs
    • Taste
Enters sweet with lots of vanilla, then slowly turning to soft spices with peaty smoke
    • Finish
rather short going from soft spices and smoke towards a bittersweet finish

Nose: Smokey, peat, banana, honey, peat sweetness, roasted caramelized nuts

Mouth: peat, smoke, mossy, a tad light oak, with water sweeter and milder

Finish: complex peat, smoke, a tad tannins, medium long

Comment: magnificant nose, the mouth and finish definitely fall flat here compared to that. But still quite good. Also this one would have gained from cask strenght i feel.

This is good stuff, indeed. Fans of Bowmore will enjoy this very much.
And with a price tag of 85 EUR, it is affordable too.
    • Nose
On the buttery nose, I am welcomed by all the typiscal Islay aromas:
seaweeds, sweet peat, salt and greasy coals. A lot of lemon and a bit of
vanilla, but really only a little bit. Reminds me a lot of the other Bowmore
from 1989 that I have tasted by QV.ID and Malts of Scotland. Only a lot more
subdued, undoubtedly due to the bottling strength. After a few minutes, I do
get some more fruit, surprisingly enough pineapple and mango.
    • Taste
On the palate it is slightly oily, much less creamy than anticipated. Feisty
on spices and a lot fruitier than the nose let on. Citrus, but also again the
tropical hint. A touch grassy. Sweet peat. White pepper. Very good.
    • Finish
The finish is long, quite smoky on spices and tropical fruit.

Wonderful nose, very nice finish, unfortunately taste lacks intensiveness and power.
