So there is nothing to talk away about here. This bottle is one of the absolute PLV frontrunners. The whisky is an absolute buy recommendation for the most popular prices. END of the announcement!
    • Nose
Very aromatic. With fine spices and woody notes. Immediately there is caramel and in the background the fruitiness and freshness that you also know from Glenlivet. Now sweet vanilla with a light apple Helene. Fine!
    • Taste
Now stronger aromas of caramel and vanilla and everything connected with wood and herbs. Then the apple Helene reports again and a hint of apple wine. Very round and creamy. Then reinforced with a little bit of pepper for a slightly tingling sensation. The mouth is finished with orange peel, some oak (not bitter) and a hint of salt and honey. Well done.
    • Finish
Unfortunately only medium length too short but with a minty freshness. Few notes of plums and plums. Dryly reminiscent of wood, it lets go warm. A hint of sweet nuttiness stays a little longer.

A very unspectacular whisky for an 18 year old.
It lacks a lot of flavor and 40% is just not enough.
    • Nose
      82 82
Honey, spices, oak, sherry, apple, apricot, orange, cinnamon, all in all a rather boring play of aromas.
    • Taste
      84 84
Apricot, spices, oak, orange, slightly floral, apple, sweet, honey.
    • Finish
      83 83
medium length finish, dry, sweet, very spicy, orange, apricot, cinnamon, honey.

Got it for my 18th birthday in 2017. (Wouldn't like to open since it has a nice meaning to me, maybe I will gift it to my son when he becomes 18.) Tried the 40% ABV new version in 2021 and found that pretty good and then I decided to try this one out from a friend's collection and it is marvelous.
    • Nose
      92 92
Very aromatic, complex, tropical fruits, balanced and elegant, sultanas, red and green fruits. honey some wood in the background
    • Taste
      95 95
Light body, very smooth, sweet, lots of fruits, honey some spices and wood later on
    • Finish
      90 90
      Malty, warm, slightly bitter, medium-long

A nice nose, meets good taste for me and a finish that is too bitter.

Can you drink it or not. You don't miss that much.
    • Nose
      84 84
Oily and slightly waxy, with vanilla, chocolate, oak, something perfume-like. After a few minutes the whisky will be lighter and fruity. Apple, both green and crunchy, as well as fermented, with orange and some apricot.
    • Taste
      82 82
Slightly fruity (apple), but more mineral and quite woody. Amazingly dry.
    • Finish
      80 80
Dry and dominated by oak spice (a bit too much for me), medium-long

    • Nose
      88 88
Smell: light fruity sweet with a slight smokiness, gooseberries, but also dark berries, dirty notes, earthy
    • Taste
      87 87
Jura-like, nice dirty earthy notes, relatively strong bitterness, coffee, subtle, pleasant dry dark berry notes, spicy wood, mint / menthol
    • Finish
      87 87
dry and bitter, not that long

  9. Don Cassi scored this whisky 72 points Expert Senior

The nose is typical Speyside and is reminiscent of the competition from Glenfiddich: fruity with ripe apples and pears, plus a little honey, similarly tender and reserved as the bottlings with deer. After a while, oranges and strawberries flash from time to time.

Surprisingly spicy and woody in the mouth and finish. Behind it again the apples and honey. Unfortunately relatively watery.
Towards the end it is more and more towards coffee, but the finish is disappointingly short.
    Length: 3/10

Altogether interchangeable Speysider, which unfortunately doesn't show its age. You also get the feeling that the freshest barrels have not been used. I definitely prefer the many independent sherry bottlings here.

    Grade: 2-

  10. Tom na Gruagaich scored this whisky 80 points Connoisseur

Then as now, I don't find anything bad about the whisky, but nothing that excites me either. Is a nice sipper, nothing more.
    • Nose
A very fruity nose, pineapple is good, raspberry? Sour apple? Maybe, I have subtle carbon dioxide, on beer mash, sweet and fruity like in a fermentation vat. This is very immediate and very surprising after 18 years of barrel aging. After a while it becomes sweeter, it shows certain vanilla and other mature notes from the wood. A very pleasant, still fresh fellow as far as the nose is concerned.
    • Taste
Very tingling and restless in the mouth, somewhat tart oak notes, tending to have a nice, sweet and fruity base.
    • Finish
The finish is also rather fresh, with a bit of tart oak and dark chocolate. But then it looks rather thin here.

    RATING: 86pts – |83 – 86 (B) → Good| — Not a “must”, but a nice-to-have.
    • Nose
      87 87
The nose has a very Glenlivet-ish profile with a domination of spicy wood and milk chocolate followed by tropical fruits.
    • Taste
      86 86
The taste is quite spicy and oily with notes of nice oakiness and strong nuances of burnt sugar and dried fruits.
    • Finish
      86 86
The finish is slightly dry and pretty spicy with notes of black pepper, dried fruits and nice coffee nuances.

    (Blind tasting 2018)

Conclusion: bet on a maximum of 46%, maybe around 17 years old, is interesting for me, but would not buy me a bottle.
    • Nose
      87 87
Wax, apricot, orange jelly (so homemade Spanish), relatively strong alcohol note.
Already good, also the slightly earthy note (positive: healing earth / clay, I like the smell), wild honey, a hint of a predator cage.
    • Taste
      86 86
Quite tart and dry at first, then a long furious sweet-spicy interplay, not bad! Well balanced, oily bitter oranges and grapefruits with honey, some cloves.
    • Finish
      85 85
Getting a little bitter and drier.

  16. Whisky Hamster scored this whisky 85 points Expert Senior

(At least a few years back) One of the more affordable 18 yo malts. Sherried but not as much as you'd think and from my experience the amount of sherry has decreased over the years. Solid malt, maybe comparable with the Farclas 18. A bit rough contrary to what you'd expect from an 18 yo mainstream malt. Some spice notes from the oak, too. Lately replaced by new version @ reduced abv. Price increased on the other hand, making it harder to justify this malt imho.

  17. Saftkenner scored this whisky 87 points Expert Senior

A nice, uncomplicated and relatively complex whisky, which was mostly available for a good price (until the end of 2019 for around €65). That was a great price-performance ratio, even if you would have wished for a slightly higher drinking strength. It's not a nice development that the successor bottle, the re-release of the 18 year old Glenlivet, is now only filled at 40%.
I was always happy to offer this bottling to guests who had never had any experience with malt whisky.
    • Nose
Very beautiful and rich nose, in which one immediately finds the age. Beautiful oak spice with sherry aromas but also fresh fruit and chocolatey notes.
    • Taste
Nice and oily for only 43%. Very slight alcoholic sharpness. Marzipan, cherry, oak spice, melon, orange, ginger.
    • Finish
Medium to long. It remains orange with milk chocolate and Christmas spices.

  18. JeJoost scored this whisky 84 points Member Senior

This is one of those great winter time drams, the oak spicyness makes this an incredibly warming malt, which I initially did not expect from Glenlivet. A big step up from the cheaper malts in their core range.
    • Nose
      83 83
Lots of wood spice, perfume, caramel, green grapes, pepper, unripe banana, apples and pears, even a little onion. A few drops of water brings out a candy sweetness and subdues the spice.
    • Taste
      85 85
Quite spicy yet also sweet, yellow fruits, tangerines, caramel, ginger, clove and a little burnt sugar.
    • Finish
      85 85
What’s new? Spicy. Slightly dry, lemon peel, warming.

    - a very good Speyside malt for a very fair price
    from about 60 €
    - significantly more flavorful and better than that
12 or 15 years standard bottling
    • Nose
complex aroma: oak, sweetness (sherry) and fruit (plums, berries, oranges)
    • Taste
sweet, aromatic strong start (due to the 43%), then sherry, fruits, spice, great combination, mild and slightly sweet, you can clearly taste the longer storage time (wood sherry aroma)
    • Finish
      long, sweet finish;
malty, light bitterness and spice in the finish

Beautiful, balanced, fresh, fruity and slightly floral malt. Nothing special, but tasty. The age is also evident with slightly spicy, woody notes. Fits.
    • Nose
      86 86
Fresh fruit, light malt or grain notes, a little cooling menthol, a nice hint of sweet citrus notes, slightly spicy light wood notes. In addition, a pleasant honey sweetness and floral notes.
    • Taste
      86 86
Pleasantly malty, again very fresh fruit, pleasantly light, spicy wood notes. Sweet citrus fruits, spicy and slightly floral.
    • Finish

I bought this when it was £60, a decent dram for that price with subtle complexity and even some old school character, but limited on the palate. can easily seem dull amongst more boisterous characters and ABVs. 6/10 (7 nose)
    • Nose
nicely honeyed, bit of beeswax candles and old drinks cabinet. madaleines, a little candied orange. creamy. really, a lovely nose.
    • Taste
again honeyed, round, baked apricots, pickled ginger. moves towards black tea. the european oak is certainly felt, a little too much for me. I would guess this is a vatting including full term EO casks rather than a reracking and finish in EO.

Good for the price but let’s be blunt...

For nearly £100 English pounds there are better thrills and spills to be had that what is on offer from the venerable Glenlivet in the current form of their 18 year old.

It’s not that it’s bad though. It’s a fine scotch. There’s all sorts of things swashing and swishing about. Toasted oak, buttery coconut, more oak, pastries. All excellent stuff on the palate (the nose is rather less exciting) but it leaves you thinking they forgot to add the magic ingredient. It’s just a bit forgettable. It’s really good but safe.

But some kind words; like many people have said, it’s extremely well balanced, everything in its place, well behaved and easy to drink and enjoy. Perfectly behaved but oh so dull.

For an 18 year old I’d expect more hutzpah, more oomph, certainly more phwoar!!! But what we have is just loads of well behaved, well mannered, manicured scotch. Tasty, golden, light and malty but a placeholder for your next great drink, whatever that may be.

    Next!

Quite a robust single malt from Glenlivet with a nice complexity, although a tad too oak driven at times.
    • Nose
Fresh with tropical fruits, balanced and elegant. Nectarines, orange peel and a whiff of sultanas. There's a touch of red apples and rose petals too, followed by a hint of sour beer. Good stuff though.
    • Taste
Somewhat acidic and slightly tannic even, but the balance is restored with a few sweeter notes. Lemon zest, oranges, candied hearts, honey, but also a small amount of ginger.
    • Finish
A hint of caramel, but also burnt toast and pepper.

  43. Schlossgespenst scored this whisky 86 points Expert Junior

A great old Speysider, on the one hand uncomplicated can be enjoyed, on the other hand, but also has enough facets to delve into it.
    • Nose
Mature, old. Heavy, flowery scent, later increasingly spicy and woody. Yellow fruit, honey melon, overall a sweet, complex fruit basket.
      A typical older, mature Speysider.
    • Taste
Firm body, creamy and fine-grained. Fine oak spice dominates initially, every now and then, a hint of flowering, such as the above-mentioned light fruitiness.
    • Finish
Slightly woody spiciness, some nutmeg, also here a light, perfumed flowery. Overall, this lasts longer than it would be trusted.

An elegant malt, which begins with a very beautiful apple note in the nose, before apricot and grape complement the fruit basket and on the palate, the oak and herbal bouquet is added. The finish then presents the 18 years. A malt for lovers of ripe bourbon barrel flavors, which are complemented by delicate sherry notes.
    • Nose
      89 89
The first impression: Beautiful apple note. Grape follows, apricot; a basket of "bright fruit". Then there are also tender sherry flavors and a freshly sawn oak board.
    • Taste
      88 88
In the mouth comes the Glenlivet also sweet and sweet-ripe apricot, before the mixture is strong-spicy; the oak logs. Finally, some sherry comes again, a few herbs are still in the damp morning herb bed.
    • Finish
      88 88
The finale shows comparatively more oak and herbs, here are the 18 years present. The fruits also become darker, the sherry-grape mixture goes away in the middle-long finish with sherry accentuation.

It is difficult to find many faults in there, although in some instances it gets fairly acidic and misses some complexity, but overall it is a nice malt. In fact, a very nice, friendly and easy malt. I like it more than one the Nadura releases that I previously tasted, which I found less complex, and it is even cheaper. So can I recommend it? Not entirely, since I believe there might be better 18-year-olds available for a similar price.
    • Nose
      84 84
Starts off with a fruity, fresh sweetness containing nectarines, oranges, and bananas. Make that lots of bananas. I surely get the tropical fruity notes that were promised. I also get a lot of American oak notes with marmalade and orange skin. The fruity notes are nicely balanced, stay fresh and deliver a reasonable complexity. (water) This brings a slighter more acidic style with orange sweets and grapefruit.
    • Taste
      83 83
Also here are oranges, in particular freshly pressed orange juice and orange skin, fresh nectarines, less banana, and some lemon juice. I find this quite acidic at first, but it balances out with some added sweetness. (water) I can find more oranges, again it is fairly acidic, and also slightly drying. Furthermore, there is lemon juice, and lemon and orange sweets. Altogether I find this a friendly and easy style.

Interesting combination of overwhelming sweetness in the aroma and floral influence.
    • Nose
very fruity and sweet. Homemade pear / apple compote. Vanilla pudding. After a few minutes, a herbal aroma that pairs with the sweetness and this pushes something into the background. Reminiscent of a spring meadow. Sweet peppers and cilantro. Oak wood also present in the aroma. Butter popcorn.
    • Taste
soft, very gentle. Spices, light peppery, but disappears quickly. Cress. Forest honey. Oak influence to feel, but hardly bitterness.
    • Finish
medium. Nuts, wood noticeable. Fruity sweetness. The watercress can also be found in the finish. Overall, however, the sweetness prevails.

A whisky that exudes quality and a very good choice when you’re in the mood for a sweet whisky, that is still distinguished, restrained and not overly sherried.
    • Nose
A fragrant, delightful nose with a lot of green apples and vanilla, and with a note of raisins in the background. Also some ginger and a hint of cinnamon.
    • Taste
Very pleasant arrival with vanilla, toffee and fresh fruits; Apples and pears. Develops apricot, ginger and peppery spiciness.

An 18 year that tastes younger (14 - 15 -ish). The promising nose doesn't really evolve into much else in the taste and finish. it's not a very complex whisky, but it is pretty well balanced with no off-notes what so ever. Very enjoyable, but not really remarkable: 83-84 points
    • Nose
citrus (ripe oranges), hint of marzipan and almonds, nut wood, touch of cocoa/chocolate
    • Taste
grainy, again citrus (sweet and sour), some mineral and metal notes. later in the development I got touches of salted toffee and chocolate
    • Finish
not very long, a bit sticky-glue-y in a pleasant way, syrupy, sweet and sour (the citrus again)

  66. Calmar scored this whisky 83 points Connoisseur

Well balanced, soft, delicate, "female" bolt. Of the shortcomings - excessive flattening on the verge of loss of individuality, total subtilism, a sense of inadequate strength, wateriness in taste, boring in general.
    • Nose
Quite subtile, flower-fruit, clarified apple juice, peel of green sour apples, peach, lemonade notes, sweet creamy tones in the background.
    • Taste
Restrained, gently peppery, moderately sweet with spicy oak bitterness.
    • Finish
Soft, pink pepper, orange skins, light creamy tones, tender oak bitterness.

  67. Gloin scored this whisky 82 points Expert Senior

He is much fresher than I remembered him. The smell takes some time to develop fully. Then he is very aromatic and complex. In the mouth he misses some complexity, but tastes good. The departure is unfortunately somewhat one-dimensional. It's been a few years since I tasted this whisky. Today I am a little disappointed. I thought that the whisky was allowed to mature in sherry casks. Sherry influence, however, I hardly find today.
    • Nose
Orange, roses, conifers, sugared lemon, a little vanilla, a little garden herbs, slightly darker over time, a touch of sweet cherries
    • Taste
Quite a good start with a light body, some sharpness on the tongue, slightly bitter oak notes, again some orange, malt, some garden herbs
    • Finish
Warming, malty, slightly bitter, hops, medium long

taste wise it would have scored an 80, but considering how affordable this bottle is, it deserves an additional 2 points. as a mainstream brand (and priced accordingly) this performs well enough for a nice and easy drinking. fruits and above average quality of wood abound in this 18 year old, providing enough satisfaction without leaving a doubt of whether one has overpaid for it.

Comment: for the price that is really a lot in the glass - quite complex - the 43% is enough for me - he is never too thin - in the nose fruity on the palate more woody, well balanced, I can always enjoy
    • Nose
Oranges with peels, fruity sweet and sour apricots, dates, vanilla, a slight waxy note - typical of older sherry casks, woody notes ranging from fine, slightly resinous wood dust, over old oak cabinet walls to freshly peeled branches - where tannins and vegetable acids are added directly to the Nose has, in addition to bitter tones reminiscent of bitter almonds and marzipan in dark chocolate, orange oil, lemon peel, a little sweet, oily, quite intense but never alcoholic
    • Taste
subtle sweetness, lemon and orange - oily with a hint of sparkling orange oil and mint notes on the tongue, the oak is initially more perceptible at the edge and forms an elegant backdrop for the fruit flavors, malt, nuts, chocolate, the palate becomes dry - sweet oak wide, spicy with tobacco and pepper, and tree sap - I would blindly rather tap here to 46%, because the oak cargo is already very spicy.
    • Finish
medium-long, spicy, oak-rich, tobacco, slightly bitter, dry

Nose tingling polish, wood, prunes, caramel, peach, the dilution brings out the almond. Powerful attack on the oak, heavy medium, spicy. Medium peppery finish. Mouth better than the nose. Medium set. Dilute it slightly.

Vanilla, honey and sweet fruits in the nose. On the tongue, a slight spicy noticeable. In the fast fading finish a very fine bitterness that still seems pleasant.

A Speyside classic, elegant, pleasant with a clear "The Glenlivet" character. With 46% vol. (better integrated) he would be better.
    • Nose
Subtle sherry, vanilla, honey and light oak and floral notes. Alcohol despite only 43% noticeable.
    • Taste
Vanilla, honey, light fruits and light sherry are joined by very dry plums. No "outliers" - not even in a positive sense. Easy but still elegant.
    • Finish
Short to medium long, dry, slightly pleasantly bitter and slightly warming.

A h2h comparison of 12, 15 and 18yo clearly shows huge differences between them. This one is obviously the best although it suffers from the low ABV.
    • Nose
Much more elegant compared to the 12yo and the 15yo. The distillery style is clearly there with the sweetness of honey, vanilla and light fresh fruits, but also some sherry influence is there.
    • Taste
Very fruity, apples, pears, a hint of plums and figs, oranges and lemons. A bit of spicyness is there too.
    • Finish
Medium-length, wood, vanilla and spices. Not too sweet, more on the dry side.

    • Nose
Apple juice with a little vanilla, cherry syrup, toasted bread and nuts.
    • Taste
Acid freshness (of the pleasant kind) stands in the foreground. Then the acid disappears briefly and it develops a nice fruity creaminess. Now the acid comes back and combines with oak flavors from the barrel. Nuts in the background
    • Finish
Mid-length finish with spiced oak and raisins.

Nice balance. But not an impressive 18 yo Speyside. 12 yo has more interesting nise and taste.
    • Nose
No water: honey sweet. Spicy. Ripe summer fruit.
With water: sweet of ripe pears, apricot. Citrussy sour.
    • Taste
Soft arrival. Nicely balanced. Development of sweet and spicy hints. Stwed pears. Ginger.
    • Finish
Long finish. Spice and sweet in turns.

An interesting batch, surely with some barrels of sherry. The 43% prevents whisky from completely expressing itself.
    • Nose
Very sweet, on caramel, vanilla. Not too dry. Correct power despite the 43%. Notes of pear brandy, green apple.
    • Taste
It makes me think a little bit of hibiki 17, with a bourbon sherry mixture (especially bourbon) that is too diluted. There are aromas of caramel and vanilla, but this time with more freshness "mentholée" associated with wood and with herbs, a little apple with cider, some calvados.
    • Finish
Interesting arrival of bitter cocoa, but the whole is also much drier. Always wood, and a minty freshness. Some touches of Mirabelle plums.
Alas, everything is a little too short.

    Lovely!
    • Nose
      Rich and
aromatic. Spices, woody notes, smoked ham, caramel fudge. At the background
fruitiness and freshness reminiscent of the Glenlivet 12.

    • Taste
      Smooth
and creamy, but also slightly tingling (alcohol, pepper). Bitter oranges, oak,
a hint of salt and honey.
    • Finish
      Long and
warming: spices and sweetness, a bit drying (woody and nutty), followed by
      succulent fruits.

Although there's more interesting stuff on the market, this is
definitely a decent 'mainstream' whisky. Given the fact that this one is
basically permanently on offer for 40 euros at some shops, this sure is
    good value-for-money.
    • Nose
Apple, vanilla, pear, marzipan, honey, caramel and oaky spice.
    • Taste
Vanilla, honey, apple, nutmeg, caramel, mint and white chocolate.

  155. Abydoss scored this whisky 88 points Member Senior

All in all wonderfully harmonious. No surprises, no disappointments. What the nose promises keeps taste and finish. But not boring, but very interesting due to its complexity.
    • Nose
Complex and balanced, much more harmonious than the 12-year-old.

Fresh floral notes. Before that intensive vanilla and honey sweetness, which drifts off a bit into stronger notes (caramel). Light oak in the background. In addition a very minimal, but the whole rounding off trace smoke.

After the first sip there are also clear chocolate tones in the aroma.
    • Taste
A sweet (fresh-floral) and slightly tingling on the tongue tip followed by intense oak. In the background a trail of roasted nuts, which then become clearer.

A soft smoke surrounds all this.
    • Finish
Medium long and soft with intense vanilla. Add a touch of oak and the roasted nuts.

    • Finish
Dry and very long and sweet.

Rich, oaky nose, with plenty of complexity: oak and toffee fudge mixed with summer fruits and a hint of freshly cut grass. A couple of drops of water (it couldn`t take any more) brought out some mint aromas and reduced the woodiness (if that is a word!). Crisp and fresh on the palate without water, smoother and richer with water. Pleasant bitter spices (not overwhelming) lead to a medium length, warming finish. A definite step up from the 12 and 15, with the slightly higher bottling strength helping. Very easy to drink!

The Glenlivet" 18 years is a showpiece, which if once was voted best single malt over 15 years. In taste and smell richer than the 12 year old with more body and complexity. Beautiful amber color and sweetness (sherry) tones, nuts and peat. Delicious soft malt with a high-level benefits
