I thought the nose doesn't do this whisky justice because the taste is surprisingly enjoyable and there's very nice complexity to this.
    • Nose
Buttery and some oak notes. Vanilla sweetness, lightly spiced, tropical fruits. Maybe even a little coconut. Slightly salty feel. Butterscotch.
    • Taste
Spicier than expected. Fine sweetness after that, with vanilla, caramel and butterscotch. Quite spicy. Dry on the tongue, oily and rather complex.
    • Finish
Medium length. Prickly at first, softer then with vanilla and caramel again, fudge maybe. Ripe fruits this time, drying and oaky.

Very smooth and balanced.  I preferred this bottle to the 1991.

This expression is the next Core Vintage to follow the Vintages 1991 and 1994. It is the first of the vintages expressly laid down at origin to be bottled as Glenrothes on maturity . As a result it is anticipated that The Glenrothes 1998 Vintage will have greater longevity than some of the earlier vintages. It is also the first bottling to carry the label signature of Gordon Motion, who has taken over as `Malt Master` with the recent retirement of John Ramsay. The comparatively youthful 1998 Glenrothes boasts a nose of spicy vanilla, golden syrup and lemongrass. The palate is gentle and quite sweet, with vanilla custard and cinnamon notes.

    • Nose
Yellow flowers (dandelions and buttercups), light honey.
Continues with notes of Sauternes wine (quite ripe apricot)
and lots of butterscotch, vanilla and cappuccino and ultimately just a bit smoky
    • Taste
In the mouth it starts a bit shy but not for long.
Quite some honey and jam, ripe apples, toast, lemon marmalade then cinnamon and nutmeg from the wood.
    • Finish
Medium finish with rich vanilla notes, but not for long.

  10. Jonkers scored this whisky 81 points Expert Senior

    • Nose
Oak and hints of butterscotch. Vanilla and tropical fruits like pineapple and banana. Salty and the presence of esters of copper.
    • Taste
Pleasant peppery. Thenm sweet and a little liquorice. Vanilla but also spicy. Dry and mouthfilling.
    • Finish
Delicious peppery and fairly sharp. Then sweetish. Figs maybe ? Medium.

    Not worse than 1994...
    • Nose
Citrus with rich vanilla dominate, lemons and limes mix with more exotic fruits. There is a cinnamon note too.
    • Taste
The citrus and fruit notes are still to the fore. There is a little distant smoke and some roasted banana.
    • Finish
      Smooth, long, rich vanilla.

Of course Glenrothes is my favorite and this is no different. Although I have my favorite vintages, this has began to open up with more time. The first release bottled in 09` was huge amounts of caramel and toffee. Too much, this is more balanced and really nice on the 11` release. Great work Glenrothes team!
