Whisky Reviews for The Last Vatted Malt NAS CB

12 users have left a review for this whisky and scored it an average of 90.29 points

Nose: Gorgeous and rich. So mature. So much balance. So much class. Smoke and smooth natural caramels. Creamy sweetness and mildly spiced white bread dough. Fruit salad in sugar syrup (think canned fruit cocktail). Now some more mature dried fruit notes. This is really an astounding nose. The earthiness of peat has been softened to allow the smoke to show through. Just the slightest bit of the typical Caol Ila briny citric edge. Immaculate.

Palate: Creamy…caramel-y…smoky…fruity…sexy…sassy. Oh, man…I truly love this whisky. Fruits in melted toffee. The perfect harmony struck here between spice, smoke, wood and cereal. Almost too easy a drinker, even at 53.7%. I could happily curl up with this bottle and a great book until the wee hours.

A peaty sherry at the top.
    • Nose
Powerful, minty. Hazelnut and nutty notes. A perfume almost captivating. Notes of humus, undergrowth, autumnal notes. At the same time, a very cool side. Olives, mustard, sweet spices.
    • Taste
A good dose of peat, sugar, cinnamon, licorice, caramel. Powerful, intoxicating. Déclicieux.
    • Finish
Very intense on liquorice and peat

Tasted blind. Smoked sherry nose with a farmer classy side. Fruity peat, the middle brings back the farmer side with the power. Beautiful texture and beautiful magnitude. Long and powerful final without being alcoholic. Very good.

    from a purchased sample
    • Nose
Interesting! A touch smoky and a subtle almost salty coastal quality.
There's an underlying sweet malt base. Grassy. If you really work at it,
you gt a touch of red fruit (berries); the sherry is extremely subdued.
Honey, toffee, crystallized barley. Pretty obviously dominated by the
ex-bourbon quality, but more other elements than the other Compass Boxes
      in this line-up.
    • Taste
Delicious. Creamy with just a bit of lemon soda water. Sugar water,
thin honey, vanilla, cardamom. Soft wood. Cinnamon. Graphite and a touch
of ash. Really very light and elegant. Maybe a little sherry in the
recesses, merged with lightly earthy/peaty notes. Eventually, more red
fruit, but it's not the strongest. Cherries?
    • Finish
Ashy, but all the same. There are a host of flavors here. The basic
malty quality leads the way; it's very good here. The ash/peat and
sherry balance it and give some balance and complexity. A very good
      effort.

Not bad, but nothing comes out of particular either. I find it difficult to peel, and the peat side is too crushed by the sherry layer.
    • Nose
Very sherry on cooked fruits. A slight smoke and a little dust. Nose nevertheless shy I find.
    • Taste
Melted on sherry. The smoke is struggling to show itself. Bitterness of pear peel.
    • Finish
Peppery explosion in the throat and wood on the tongue.

    Oh, crap, another
blend that scores a 90. We shall not make this a habit. At the same time, the
Last Vatted Grain was bottled as well, but I have not yet had the fortune to
try it. This blend can still be found, but will set you back around 200 EUR or
    more.
    • Nose
      Well, the nose is
very interesting indeed. While the Caol Ila takes care of a coastal jacket with
a touch of salt and moss, itâ€
    • Taste
      Perfect arrival, spicy
and peaty with loads of citrus. Caol Ila takes over. Graphite. Hints of ashes,
earth and sweet peat. Olive oil. Cardemom. Cinnamon. Oak. The whole is wrapped
in a blanket of red fruit. The second wave contains dark chocolate, orange
peel, raisins and dades Hint of coconut and chicory.
    • Finish
      The finish is long
and dry, making a perfect pas-de-deux between the peat and the sherry.

  7. granella2003 scored this whisky 83 points Connoisseur

    • Nose
Minty, buttery and spicy with notes of ice wine, a touch of gentle smoke, a
little prune juice and some subtle peat.
    • Taste
Full and sweet with a whack of sherried malt and
peat smoke, chocolate raisins and berry fruits. A hint of rhubarb crumble and
wood smoke, with a little linseed and pine resin.
    • Finish
Peaty, smoky and oily with toffee brittle and
      salty butter.

A whisky commemorating the end of an era in Whisky history - the
enactment of the Scotch Whisky Regulations of 2009. After the 22nd of
November 2011 whiskies can no longer be labelled as Vatted Malts, the
new term being the (debatably) confusing Blended Malt Scotch Whisky. This
bottling, a cask strength vatting of 36-year-old Speyside malt and 26-year-old Islay malt, is Compass Box`s tribute. Just 1323 bottles of this were released.
