Whisky Reviews for Glenlochy 1980 SV

[January, 2018]  Most of Glenlochy was converted into residential buildings several years ago and the result looks very charming.  It is worthwhile to stop at this site when visiting Ben Nevis nearby (you pass the Glenlochy site anyhow when going north).  Beside four Rare Malt releases (that are all great) there was never any official Glenlochy bottling but a lot of usually really nice independent ones.

The colour is amber and the texture shows a sticky ring at the top of the glass that very late builds some fat tears and slow moving legs (I love such a fat oiliness!).  The nose offers this typical fruity and honey sweet profile Glenlochy was famous for together with autumn floral (hay-like) aromas.  All nicely balanced and quite complex.  The initial mouthfeel is warming and coats the whole of the mouth (just like the texture promised it) with a minor bitter-adstringent feeling (that is not distracting at all).  The taste is very sweet both on barley sugary and honey flavours with lots of different fruits and spices from the woods.  Again nicely balanced and layered and very chewable.  Notes of beeswax and butter cookies join in after a while.  The finish is very long and rich with more delicious spicy flavours and even some salt.  No distracting moments here.  Water turns the dram creamier and even sweeter but I like it best when neat.

Yes, this is another proof how good the profile of this lost distillery was.  Unfortunately it was located within the city limits of Fort Williams so the real estate price justified its closure during the whisky crisis of the eighties (despite a high quality spirit).  Sadly, the same happened to excellent Glenugie and St. Magdalene (Linlithgow), too...

Ingenious Lochy, reminiscent of the other full-bodied Bourboncasks of Lochy I already had.
    • Nose
Almonds, licorice, camphor, marzipan, cardamom, beautiful exotic nose as I love it, fennel, ginger, hint of anise, vanilla, papaya, white chocolate, banana, macadamia nut, oiled leather, old oak
    • Taste
Very intense, sweet tropical honey, wax, almonds, licorice, cardamom and camphor, fennel and ginger, hint of anise, papaya, rose water, cotton candy, a lot of toffee and candied pear, mango, very oily
    • Finish
Very long and full, still the wax, the tropical spices and papaya, some pear, sweet malt and oak

N: grapefruit, hay stacks, icing sugar, golden delicious, mint and coconut shavings. It's complex, a bit dusty, but fruity and friendly.

P: very malty and fruity, with spice at the end. It's mouth coating and pleasant. Breakfast cereal with yogurt and honey, vanilla pods, mint, mango and pineapple. Towards the end, there is allspice.

F: long and pleasant, with a dash of pepper, cooling mint, yellow and tropical fruit and a malty core.

    With water:-

No real change on the nose but the palate is more creamy and thicker but its still zesty and vibrant.

    Still a long finish.
    • Nose
Grapefruit & honey at first, a little beeswax, slight orange, warm pastries, whipped cream.

After a while something darker, chocolate brownie , not strong chocolate but the crusty top part?
    • Taste
Quite creamy, punchy, nice oily mouthfeel.

Some fruit but not loads with mango, a little peach, pastry, wafer and then the alcohol content seems to grow.

A little like warm croissant , with butter and a light jam, nice profile
    • Finish
Long, gaining in power becoming very sherbet like in the aftertaste.

It's amazing. Certainly one of my top 5 Whiskies so far.
    • Nose
Intense honey, raw barley. After a while it gets slightly farmy, mostly on hay. Certainly waxy. Nice soft apple note, more like apple liqueur. Good mirabelle notes. After a while the fruit takes over completely, but not in youthful way like "green apples", more on soft overripe or stewed stuff. Very dense even if it's a little subdued.
    • Taste
So much wax in the arrival. Might as well chew on candles. Yellow plums/mirabelles follow immediately. Again that apple liqueur, and then the oak kicks in but it is not disturbing in any way. It is rather an asset here. This is a heavy oily Whisky. Very substantial and not easy to sip. Overwhelming mouthfeel.
    • Finish
Certainly long and very rich. Very oily and the oak is still there accompanied by some light citrusy notes.
