Whisky Reviews for Linkwood 1984 AD

  1. Waykid scored this whisky 89 points Expert Senior

This was in a bar and the bottle had just been opened: unfortunately I forgot to visit and sample again after few months... I really liked it despite the closedness, I bet that with enough breathing this one would really be something for me. Even the sulphur was pleasant: matches can be a bit challenging, but not here.
    • Nose
Really tight without water, mocha, strong and delicate, somewhat savoury and brown syrup. With water it opens up with a matches-sulphur, dried dates, maple syrup, and very nice dark coffee. Oven baked apples with hazelnut, chocolate-mocha cake. The sulphur is rather strong but quite pleasant here, an apply oak, dark cherries both fresh and alcohol-soaked. Dry woody notes: the oak is really strong here.
    • Taste
This is very closed - here I would blame the neck. Anyhow dark coffee, some toffee, cherries, eucalyptus, lemontee, chocolate, cane sugar and chocolate-mocha. Burnt matches here also in terms of sulphur.
    • Finish
Quite long and on the dry side, grapefruit and strong oakiness.

  2. GlenSikkes did not rate this whisky Connoisseur

    Tasting Notes by Adelphi;

1 of only 216 bottles from cask no. 5269From a fairly active refill European oak hogshead, this has a gorgeous polished mahogany hue. Give it time to open up, and develop: on the nose, After Eights, Simnel cake, fresh Cep mushrooms. Sweet on the mouth, typical Speyside, some Hessian, chocolate, good texture, brandy snaps on the back of the tongue lend an extra spiciness. With a wee dash of water, it opens up even more and becomes more fragrant. Candied orange peel, thyme and tarragon, burnt sugar and peppermint also appear. Very dark chocolate lingers at the end, with a hint of pepperiness. Still lively despite its age. A complex whisky which changes in the glass.

  3. alectron scored this whisky 88 points Connoisseur

Much better balance after a long time in the open bottle, adjusting scores from 85 to 88.
    • Nose
First of: fairly faint & needs work to be explored. Somewhat sour-bitter, woody, sherry, musty, spicy, wet linen, fresh plums, some chocolate, some mushrooms, slightly medicinal/iodine, (85)
Later: sweeter, sherry moves to the fore, cinnamon, (87)
    • Taste
nice oily consitency, a big hit of a lot of notes, very complex for 1-2 seconds, thinning out immediately. Interesting sweet-bitter-ness, tobacco, sherry, wood, marshmellow,  (87)
later: gets more presence & depth, less bitterness,  (88)
    • Finish
dry sherry, dry wood, dark chocolate, prickly, nice fruityness, turning bitter. (77)
later: still some bitterness, but much better balance in the finish than before, leather, sherry, marshmellows, dark chocolate. (84)
