A definite port finish,as betrayed by the colour. Very summery light and thirst-quenching.
    • Nose
Perky, refreshing. Pink grapefruit. The light and charming sweetness of juicy plums.
    • Taste
Silky, with a muslin-like feel. The same delicate pleasing sweetness brings fruity flavors. A wine touch followed by dryspices.
    • Finish
      Dry with a tingling fizziness.

While expecting to taste the recent Quinta Ruban 14 y.o., I got back to the previous 12 y.o. standard.
It's still very much enjoyable, with richness of red fruits and spice. Not very complex, but easy to drink, it looks like a fairly balanced interpretation of what a cask finish should taste like.
The Port character is not predominant but clearly recognizable, giving a sense to the cask finish as more than a variation to the usual core range.

n: intense dark friut and port, red orange, little dry, oak in back
t: very juicy, mouthwatering, oak, fruit
    a: spicy, friut, mint chocolate

Great Port Finish, a good Highland Malt!
    [Color] bronze;
    • Nose
      distinct Portaromen, dark fruits, sweetness, nuts, dark chocolate;
    • Taste
      soft powerful start, voluminous, sweetness, fruits, port, chocolate, oak, harmonious, complex;
    • Finish
long, warm finish and nutty sweet finish!

  7. Koning scored this whisky 83 points Expert Senior

A bit unbalanced. Impressions of Schwarzwalder Kirsch (cherry-chocolate pie) and After Eight, but at the same time a bit 'green', oaky and astringent. The fruity and smooth character of Glenmorangie hardly shines through
    .
    • Nose
Fresh (clean laundry), cacao, mint candy, cherries, citrus, gooseberry, band-aid/plaster
      .
    • Taste
Green/vegetal, grapefruit, chocolote, mint, walnuts, a bit woody and astringent (tannins)
      .
    • Finish
A bit spicy, mandarine, sour cherries, oaky and a bit astringent again. Also a bit waxy and a hint of smoke
      .

    • Nose
Sweet with fruits and honey. Strong whiffs of canned cranberry and strawberry mini-wheat filing (!), as well as a hint of bourbon.
    • Taste
Thick, mouth-watering and mouth-coating. Nicely spicy and assertive, apple, those gooey-filled strawberry hard candies, red fruit roll-ups, and the underlying distillery house style in the background. Really nice!
    • Finish
Medium length. A little hot, woody and bitter, complex, full-bodied, heavy and interesting, a bit demanding but your attention is rewarded.

Nose: soft fruit, winegums, powdered sugar, crème brulee.

Feels a bit thin, but pleasant.

Taste: spicy arrival. Peper and sugar. Red fruits like cassis. Very sweet, but also a bit drying on the tongue.

Finish: quite long, sweet with some oak.

Easy dram, decent, but that's just it.

  13. MaltyMillionaire scored this whisky 86 points Expert Senior

One of the first whiskies I ever had. And still a decent dram.
    • Nose
Sweet and fresh. Honey and red fruits. Slight tingly spice. Vanilla.
    • Taste
Soft sweet arrival. Then spices emerge on balance with honey and red fruit and a mild citrus note.
    • Finish
Smooth finish, but the spices erupt immediately. Sweetness drop quickly for a drying and lingering finish with mild fruit.

  14. pianoman scored this whisky 86 points Connoisseur

    • Nose
Dark fruits, plums, berries. Creamy. Bananas and sugared oranges.
    • Taste
Heavy. Plums, pickled sweet cherries. Chocolate. Slightly peppery, slightly sticky. Sweet and dry.

  15. J.K.Ch scored this whisky 80 points Expert Senior

Totally decent whisky, but it's not exactly my style. I would appreciate the fruit more mature. On the other hand, being in the barrels after the port is quite fresh. So lovers of lighter and lighter whiskys could come to theirs.
    • Nose
Less ripe fruit and a less ripe pear, similar to Glenmorangie 10 Yo. Fine influence of port wine. Somewhere I saw Christmas. And yes, you are there.
    • Taste
A special warm pear aroma, a chocolate truffle candy, a hint of grapes, and a bitter bitterness, perhaps like a burgundy bunch of grapes and unripe fruit. Traces of high-chocolate chocolate.
    • Finish
The mouthpiece is quite long, fruity, with a hint of oranges and some unidentifiable exotic fruit for me. Generally, the sound is drier and slightly bitter.

  16. spigray scored this whisky 86 points Connoisseur

n:  a very fruity nose with quite some substance but no complexity.
raspberries, strawberries, red currants and cherries.
black forest gateaux, some oak shining through
t:  juicy mouthfeel, like on the nose very fruity, add a few sultanas. not too winey.
        a little oak again.
nice , but lacks a bit of complexity
f:  medium to long, a little drying
comments:  a nice sipping whisky for summer´s evenings on the terrace

Fairly delicious, better than Lasanta, but could tolerate a bit more fruit. Personally, I find the Nectar D'Or more interesting.
    • Nose
dark sweetness, nut, cocoa, raisins, Sachertorte .... a hint of overripe black cherries
    • Taste
sweet, full-bodied, dark walnut chocolate, walnut, wild honey
    • Finish
      long, dark chocolate, slightly spicy

my entry into the port wine-matured, great, uncomplicated, not too complex
    • Nose
sweet, caramel, port, nuts, some chocolate
    • Taste
soft, dark fruits, nevertheless strong onset, but gentler than the Lasanta, chocolate
    • Finish
medium to long, sweetish, softly fading

A whisky for the wine lover.

My parents have never liked spirits, but as wine/port drinkers they quite enjoyed this. The port influence is considerable, maybe too much for people who aren't too fond of wine.

I would strongly urge you to add at least two (I prefer 3) tea spoons of water and let it rest in the glass for 15-30 minutes, as it can come across as a bit too acid and alcohol driven when neat.

Time and water works wonders for this whisky; after 15 minutes the acid wine note is replaced with a lovely sweetness and fresh port note.

All in all a lovely whisky, but I'm noticing that the price is getting higher and higher...

Notes are based on a 30ml glass with 2 tea spoons of water and 15 minutes in the glass.
    • Nose
Prominent port, wine, dry vanilla, raisin
    • Taste
Boiled dry fruit, even more port, slightly acid, dark chocolate
    • Finish

I really like the Glenmorangie wood expressions. Dr Bill have made an excellent job so far. Today I will give it 85/100.

    (Rating interval 85-88)
    • Nose
Vinous and spicy, pink pepper and rose hip. quite light on the nose. Caramelize orange?
    • Taste
if light on the nose it is more full-bodied on the palate. Sweet red apples, raisins, caramel, rose hip again, aromatic oak and black pepper. Some spicy perfume notes are playing in the background.
    • Finish
Medium in length, balanced spices, aromatic pink pepper and soft weak nutmeg.

  34. Whisky Hamster scored this whisky 85 points Expert Senior

What a fine dram! I tended to stay away from Glenmorangie somehow because my impression was that the standard range was quite mediocre and there were more attractive alternatives out there.
So I had only tried the Astar which I also liked for its cask strength like 57,1% ABV .

Since the extra matured range was on sale lately I bought some Nectar d'Or and Quinta Ruban as well and must admit, I consider them both little gems at an affordable price.

If you enjoy port as I do, you will find a distinct (tawny) port influence throughout, but especially on the nose and the finish. Since there are different kind of ports, influences vary. I had a different port experience with the BenRiach 17 Solstice and a Springbank bottling by Whiskykanzler, probably partly due to their entire maturation happening in port pipes.

So I encourage you to grab yourself a bottle, because from April '14 on, Glenmorangie's extra matured range is supposedly getting a hefty raise in price.

Quality Glemnorangie again. I like the 10 years old and this isnt that complex but quality wise good whisky in this price range.

I like Glenmorangie because their strict casks policy which reflects into the quality of the spirit

Is a nice round whisky without serious corners and edges. The port's influence is clearly noticeable. Can you pass well as a Christmas whisky.
    • Nose
light sweetness, caramelised oranges, some yellow plums, butter scotch candies, a hint of vanilla cream pudding, slight hint of cloves (the spice), everything beautifully integrated and round
    • Taste
again light sweetness, mild, soft, a little bit oily in the feeling, mixture of orange juice and ripe peaches, light rose wine note, min. Alc. Noticeable
    • Finish
medium long, orange-caramel dessert, slightly dry, dark chocolate

The darkest and most intense whisky in the extra-matured range, Glenmorangie Quinta Ruban has spent 10 years maturing in American white oak casks, before being transferred into specially selected ruby port pipes from the Quintas or wine estates of Portugal.

Quinta Ruban is Glenmorangie`s port finish. To craft this single malt they specially selected Port pipes from the Douro valley in Portugal
The nose is full of winter berries and a touch of port. A good oak and a little cereal hanging in the substratum. The palate is sweet and thick. The port note is chewy and rich with notes of barley sugar and cereal and lots of juicy fruit and berries, a tad cloying. The finish is long and fruity and quite sweet.
