Whisky Reviews for Dalwhinnie 15-year-old

  1. El Bastardo scored this whisky 60 points Member Senior

A rock-solid whisky for intermediate drinkers and an excellent choice for beginners until one or the other newbie might raise the bar.
    • Nose
Quite fruity, I would say above average. A very light smoke can be found, but only relatively at the beginning. It flies quickly. Despite the age, a sweet and fresh meadow and other bright fruits. If you give it a little time, the age comes to the fore.
    • Taste
More on the sweet side, but this is partly offset by the weight and flavor.
    • Finish
Remains for a long time and is pleasantly clumsy down the throat.

Nose: Honey, caramel, bright green apples

Palate: apples and caramel stay, nice and thick but not oily

Finish: the sweetness continues to fade to grass and hay.

Overall: Nice but a little to delicate for me to buy a bottle.

Balanced, seasoned, light, but you cannot call it saturated, there is a variety in it, sometimes dry as red wine, sometimes it seems sweet, honey, but not complicated. First, a little peat adds piquancy to the middle of the bottle, peat appears more, more bonfire, smoke, old skin, a little sea theme, whisky becomes even tastier.
    • Nose
First of all, woody and dry, light, a hint of oiliness and something burnt, quite seasoned, with the aroma of field herbs and honey. Later a hint of sea salt, and more peat, a wood fire.
    • Taste
The taste is sweet, oak-honey, some sweet citruses, bitter herbs. After some time, a sweet, delicious, smoked malt appears.
    • Finish
Light bitterness, a taste of alcohol, a little peat, long-lasting and warming from the inside, the aftertaste as if chewing a piece of wood.

A bit dry but some nice honey, floral and pear notes come through.

Warmly coats the palate with a bit of spice, honey and some salt. This is not as sweet on the palate as the nose suggests but with some oxygen and maybe a drop of water, this settles out nicely.

Rather long with floral notes and spice lingering. A classic highland single malt!

Extraordinarily complex, delicate, beautiful whisky! Incredible nose, and a satisfying palate that keeps me very interested. Makes a great aperitif, and also pairs well with chocolate or cheese.

This is something special.  I typically do not enjoy light whiskies, but this one is a rare exception, in that it asserts itself in a way that others do not.  It has a superb nose, and the taste does not belie the nose.  In fact, the taste gave me all the notes of the nose, along with more honied notes and wispy smoke.
    • Nose
Light, creamy frosting, vanilla, honey, and very light floral and herbal notes.
    • Taste
Clover honey, candle wax, slight citrus (lemon), baking spice, and the slightest wisps of smoke.
    • Finish
Short but sweet, vanilla, and slight smoke, like birthday candle smoke a few minutes after they’ve been blown out.
