Whisky Reviews for Old Pulteney Row to the Pole

  1. DramGoodLife scored this whisky 88 points Expert Senior

Lovely expression, a well made Old Pulteney which delivers all the right notes at the right time.
    • Nose
Initial sweetness, lots of sweet fruit, strong green apple notes followed by a delicious honey. Repeat nosing will bring out some softer maritime and coastal notes. More of a salted honey than full on sea air.

Finish is creamy, little more salty than the nose and palate. Little heat on the finish, the wood spice carries on. Green apple peel note on the finish.
    • Taste
Sweet on the tip with some fruity notes, creamy vanilla coats the mouth, some wood spice. Quite a lively palate considering only 40%.
    • Finish
Finish is creamy, little more salty than the nose and palate. Little heat on the finish, the wood spice carries on. Apple peel carries on.

In celebration of explorer Jock Wishart?s successful ?Row to the Pole?
expedition, Old Pulteney has released a commemorative edition of its
Wick-distilled single malt. This variant has been matured in ex American and ex
Spanish sherry casks, selected by distillery manager Malcolm Waring. It carries
no- age-statement and just 3,000 35cl bottles are available. The nose boasts
hay, eating apples, brine and even a suggestion of smoked fish. Spice, drinking
chocolate and fresh fruit on the palate, with notable presence of medium-sweet
sherry. Sweet and quite long in the finish, which features a final flourish of
    sea salt.

    Lovely Pulteney, that
remains soft and sweet thanks to the sherry influence. It is sold in 35cl half
    bottles for around 40 EUR.
    • Nose
      The nose is fresh and
fruity with clear hints of freshly cut grass, white fruit and a sherry
influence (think oranges), but with a wonderful smokiness and some brine. You
will be transported to the coast. Smells a bit like raw mussels with whipped
cream (wtf?). Nice balance. Good nose.
    • Taste
      Good mouthfeel. Immediately
spicy and sweet with citrus fruit, milk chocolate, sultanas, wonderfully
balanced by the salty edge that also offers some woodsmoke. Good stuff.
    • Finish
      The finish is rather
long, starts off sweet, but ends in a big briny note.

Tasting Notes by Gavin D Smith for Whisky AdvocateExplorer

Jock Wishart`s successful `Row to the Pole` expedition is celebrated

with this 3,000 bottle commemorative edition matured in ex-American and

ex-Spanish oak sherry casks selected by distillery manager Malcolm

Waring. New-mown grass, ripe apples, brine, and a whiff of Arbroath

smokies on the nose. Citrus fruit, spices and milk chocolate on the

palate, with sherry lending gravitas. The finish is sweet, full, and

lengthy, with brine returning at the last. 86 Points

A limited half bottle edition of Old Pulteney created specially to
celebrate their Row to The Pole team, who rowed to the magnetic North
Pole in 2011 - the first group to ever do so. A traditional Pulteney
dram, with sea air and citrus, packaged in a small sail cloth bag.
