Whisky Reviews for Tomatin 1976 TWT

Easy drinking (despite the quite loud oak) and excellent Tomatin with its fruity and juicy palate.

    Tasting note from july 2017.
    • Nose
Sherry notes. Prune, raisins, spices, oak, polish. The Tomatin tropicalness is pushed in the background (bananas essentially). With aeration the exotic fruits strike back.
    • Taste
The attack is fruity and oaky. Tropical juice, honey, oak and pepper.
    • Finish
      Medium, fruity and spicy.

Note by Serge Valentin from whiskyfun.com:

Tomatin 34 yo 1976/2011 (46%, Mo Òr Collection, sherry butt, cask #4, 954 bottles)  The outturn seems huge, but those were 50cls at 46% vol. and it was a butt. Colour: dark gold. Nose: tropical? You bet! This is ridden with ripe bananas, mangos, maracuja, and papayas. The sherry’s there, but it hasn’t got a lot to say in front of this tropical extravaganza. Raisins, perhaps? The whole’s perfect, and much less vulgar than you would think given the ueber-fruity profile. Mouth: a fruity bomb, and everything’s perfect. Multi-vitamin fruit juice, blood oranges, mango cream, cassata, white chocolate, and a wee bit of dried coconut. Perhaps a few sultanas too? Truly excellent, it would have just been even more ‘hyper-top-notch’ at a higher strength. Finish: medium, on pure tropical fruits with a little honey. Comments: high class, with sometimes something of Lochside. Flipside, these wonderful whiskies are so easy to drink that you need to use a cork locker. SGP:741 - 91 points.

    Tomatin 34 yo 1976 (46%, Mo Òr Collection 2011, sherry butt #4, 954 btl.)

Nose: mirabelles on syrup, soaked raisins, ripe plums and red berries. That lovely Tomatin fruitiness topped with sandalwood and oak polish. Baked bananas in the background. Soft herbal and spicy notes (juniper, mint). Again this is one of the more heavy-body versions that have less tropical fruits and more classic sherry. Very good nonetheless. Mouth: sweet and fruity, great sherry character again and a great wave of pink grapefruit and – there they are – tropical fruits like mango and honeydew melon. Also hints of coconut cream, a really nice touch. Quickly after that though, it swings towards herbs and liquorice, with a woodiness and a peppery feeling that seems louder than in similar expressions. Finish: slightly shorter than expected. Still lots of mint and spicy notes.

This Tomatin 1976 combines a fruity core, a balanced amount of sherry and oak. I tried it quickly before (thanks Kris for sharing Marc’s bottle, heheh) and it seemed a tad too woody back then. After a proper tasting I think it’s certainly within limits and quite a rich version. Around € 150 for a 50cl bottle.

    Score: 91/100

    Color: Copper Gold.

Nose: Yeah! is the first word that comes to mind, nosing this. Waxy and fruity, but also a nice kind of old dustiness. Chocolate, mocha and old laid back Sherry, more of the Fino kind if you ask me. Very structured and refined. Probably a refill cask. A little bit creamy. Distinguished, but not the famous 70`s (exotic) fruits in this, like we know from the 30yo. Very elegant wood, combined with an acidic kind of smell. Mocha again and a little hint of vanilla.

Taste: Nice peppery and woody attack at first and then yes, a mouth coating layer of tropical fruit cocktail, that pushes everything aside for a while. The pepper stays, but the wood vanishes for a moment, but returns. Great effect! Papaya, pineapple and passionfruit. Maybe some mango (maybe not). What a nice cloying finish of fruits, wood, paper and chocolate. The pepper is gone by now, but an added note of Gewurztraminer finishes the whole off. Nice.

This is again a perfect example of how great Tomatin`s from 1976 are. It may not be the most over-complex distillate around, but the way the fruits shines through is truly amazing. This is sooo nice. I love this!

    Points: 91

    Original Tasting Notes

Nose: Overwhelming sherry notes, but refined hints of fruit develop over time.

Especially ripe banana. Also a drop of shoe polish present.

Taste: Garden herbs and liquorice too. Sweet tones of lemon in the background.

Has a lovely creamy feel to it.

Finish: Remains creamy for a long time. Very rich finish but a certain freshness on top of it.
