Had this Whisky on the Whiskyschiff in Luzern. The nose was great, taste and finish was good but a bit weaker compared with the 17 year old Hibiki

My rating concerns the whisky back in 2013, when a bottle costed less than 300€.
    Fantastic notes, round and exotic.
But seeing a bottle around 1k€ nowadays is not worth the money for sure.

Acetone is strong at first, so you need airing

Thick vanilla, sweet, no uncomfortable flavour, nuts

The price standards are not good these days

I taste this malt during my trip to Japan in September 2019, at Cask Strength in Tokyo.
Maybe I was not very fit, but I thought better, given the aging of 21 years and the great fame of this whiskey, I expected more sensations, more emotions, instead my Harmony Master's Select holds up well the comparison.
    • Nose
Sweet and creamy scent like Hibiki Harmony. I can't feel much more evolved sensations. You can feel the sweetness of the grain and after a while I seem to perceive a good pipe tobacco
    • Taste
Also in the mouth it is sweet and creamy, velvety, captivating. Very feminine
    • Finish
      Quite long finish, good

Don’t know why people like it so much.
Very plain one at even half of its price.

A pleasant sweet nose with wisps of smoke and wood also a nice sweet palate but it is a little thin and watery in my view.
Some nice spice notes emerge that liven things up
and the balance is decent as are the flavours, at a higher strength the profile would shine, perhaps 48-50% is needed.
At this price it is very poor value, this is nothing special, but it is a nice sipping whisky for sure,

Hibiki 21 - It was one of my dreams several years ago to have it in my glass and how exceptional it would be when Japanese whiskies were exploding (price-wise).
Tonight is the night so to say!
Nose: Very fruity and balanced maybe too balanced but ok it is a blend so maybe to be expected. Give it some time in the glass as the fruit-bomb develops from minute to minute. Apricots, lychees, mango, oranges, papaya very exotiv fruit basked. So let's see what it brings on the palate: Very round, very smooth simply very nice. When pouring the dram in the glass 30 minutes ago I had a first little sip and was very disappointed. Now 30 minutes later it really shows its full variety. The fruit basket is as in the nose maybe even some additonal fruits like raspberries or a hint of cinnamon.
The finish is a bit short but ok it is a 43% blend so you could have expected it. All in all a great ride through the fruit jungle which I truly did not wanna miss. Of course when looking at today's money you need to invest for a bottle like this definitely invest it in some 1970s independent Speysiders. They are much more complex and even cheaper but if you find the opportunity to drink a dram of this great Hibiki 21 you definitly should give it a try. 89/100

  13. I_am_not_HS305 scored this whisky 87 points Expert Senior

beautiful blend without mistakes but almost too round, has little character.

Very sweet, lots of bright fruits, great mouthfeel.

In a direct comparison at the Finest Spirits 2018 whiskey fair against a Ben Nevis 22 Oloroso Cask, he loses significantly and the Ben Nevis does not cost 200 euros.

    Price is totally excessive.

That's a damn tasty blend. Probably the tastiest I have tasted so far. He's fun.

However, you have to pay heavily. The current price is lifted without question. Since you get a few 20-30 years old, beautifully matured Bourbon keg whiskeys, with which you can also have a lot of joy.
    • Nose
Immediately after pouring, surprisingly, some glue. So let it stand for a few minutes. After a few minutes my nose reminds me of an old bourbon barrel of whiskey. A real fruit basket. A mixture of yellow fruits and tropical fruits. Quince, yellow gooseberry, lychee, papaya, etc. In addition, an aromatic note, which I ascribe to the oak. I'll say furniture polish.
    • Taste
Full, intense and sweet in the mouth. Some cotton candy. Birch sap. Then again the full droning fruits. Date, tangerine, mango, pineapple. This aromatic note comes again. Floor wax and shoe wax. Then a little orange with cloves. It is getting drier.
    • Finish
The oak flavor is spreading. Dark chocolate with orange pieces. Dry wood. Pear dish.

Sweet fruits, dates, old leather, chocolate, christmas cake, furniture polish, coffee, vanilla, oak cask, mown hay, cream and apples notes on nose.

Chocolate, spices, dried fruits, oak cask, light creosote, apples notes on palate.

Spices, vanilla, oak cask, apples, green tea, chocolate notes on long finish.

N: Soft-rich fruits (blood orange, frangipane-cherry, marmalade, orange blossom, wild strawberries, raspberry leaf tea wrapped in plasticine, fusty peppery dunnage, yes! Like a genie of the lamp, i seem to get exactly whatever I ask for.
T: Woody-fruity-sugary with thick-deep bitter putty - the oak has a bite, soft yes but a bite nevertheless.
    F: Not a long finish.
    C: Another case of the 1,2 & 3’s - nose>palate>finish.Scores B[-] points overall [nose A,..]

So far probably. One of the 1-3 best Japanese I ever had, wow!
    • Nose
Fermented fruits, mushy strawberry, baked apple, honey, pear and vanilla, very fragrant as one is used to from Japan and Hibiki in particular, one could give it time forever
    • Taste
All fruits from above again, apple, pear, sour berries, elegant cedar and licorice, ginger, nutmeg, cinnamon, dried fruit, very full-bodied for the%, wow!
    • Finish
Long, ginger, apple peel, dried fruit

Gouted at the end of the session, too dense to be fully appreciated with taste buds very tired ... it makes you want to come back. Monstrously accurate, floral and over-fruity!

  21. lachaineduwhisky did not rate this whisky Expert Senior

Extremely melted, bubble gum, oaky, mint: captivating. In the mouth, very creamy and supple in addition to being connected with the nose. Super class. Velvet finish!

    Enthusiasm 5/5

N- Sticky honey with floral and vanilla custard. Ultra pleasant and
soothing, but lack of identity, a dram everyone would enjoy, but not
    remembering it the day after.

P- Instant tips of sweet on a seasonal wood, tabacco, dry with alluring pear drops. Some mints. F- Medium-long, broad with finesse and not aggressive, balance with
peppery emerge. Nice blend but austere. Would be excellent at her
actual value, which is 4 times lesser than what she worth now.

    • Nose
Floral, varnish, wax and dissolvent? A little fruit compote, candied clementines and malt. Very elegant.
    • Taste
More dry and a little smoke. There are also stewed fruits and some citrus fruits. Honey and wax too.
    • Finish
Long, slightly smoky and quite woody / spicy.

A great whisky indeed - it's just a bit too sweet and smooth for my taste - thus is probably not my favorite but still great
    • Nose
Sweet oak and vanilla, rich, intensive, also fruity like citrus fruits, tropical fruits, passion fruits, ripe bananas, pineapples
    • Taste
Very oily, liquorice, mellow and thick, nice fruity notes with rich vanilla and oak aromas, nice sweetness, after a while also some nutty and cinnamon notes come up
    • Finish
Long and smooth, still having some citrusy and vanilla

  26. ScottFrench scored this whisky 89 points Expert Senior

A dram very pleasant to drink, multi-faceted. A first level of tasting easy and pleasant, but when you dig, it is complex and full of surprises, all without a real flaw!
    • Nose
The first nose is very floral and gives off scents of feminine scent. There is little difference. Leave him a little time to open ... We now see notes of candied almonds and oranges. The whole is dry, but with a little opening, notes of vanilla and honey counterbalance and round off the feeling of drought. We have here a rather complex nose, not easy to define. I am very curious of what we reserve the continuation ...
    • Taste
A light and dry texture, but with the body despite the reduction to 43%. Citrus fruits and some bitterness could be reminiscent of dark chocolate. Then we go on peppermint. We lose the sweet and delicate side of the nose. In the mouth there is something more rough and angular. I was expecting a rather easy blend, that's not the case! After a few minutes, you can even smell an ounce of smoke.
    • Finish
Rather long and dry on pepper and spices. Complex and pleasant.

The Hibiki 17 has long been one of my favorites, very round, lovely, fruity. Yesterday I had the 21 for the first time - and yes, it leaves the 17er in the shade, is much stronger, more intense, even if the flavor is the same. You can tell the age. He is world class!

Plum nose, ripe, light solvent. Pecking and smooth mouth. Better than the 17th and the 12th.

This whisky uses three different types of oak casks, malts from Yamazaki and Hakushu distilleries, and 3 different types of grain whiskies from the Chita distillery. It is amazingly complex and inviting, with a nose that’s buttery and smooth with subtle spices of hazelnut and vanilla, peaches, pears, and plums, and a touch of oak. The taste is smooth and spices builds slowly to a peak of pepper, chili powder, and allspice before fading slowly to reveal vanilla, tree fruits, jasmine, and a hint of mint. The finish is long and dry with subtle spices that fade as tree fruit and vanilla notes build and linger. If you have a chance, you must try this!

after the utterly stunning release of 2011 (which I had on 95 points!) I tried this version several times, but none of the other batches came close to it. For me, that's clear a case of batch variation and not a matter of mood/environment/temperature.

My scores stretches from 86 to 95 points so it's time to re-rate this version at 91 points.

    Winner
    World’s Best Blended Whisky – 2013
    World Whiskies Awards

Two years running this is the best Japanese blended Whisky.

Hibiki 21 was named World’s Best Blended Whisky at the 2014 World Whiskies Awards and was awarded 96 points in Jim Murray’s 2014 Whisky Bible. Dr. Whisky says it’s ‘Unbelievably balanced, and dangerously drinkable’. So basically, it’s fantastic stuff!

Hibiki, the highest class of blended whisky, was launched to commemorate Suntory’s 90th anniversary in 1989. It represents the corporate philosophy of Suntory – “in harmony with people and nature”.

Nose…. Sweet, caramalised nuts, some lemon acidity, blackcurrants and pears with vanilla, dark toffee and rich sherry spice.

Palate…. Oak, dark cherry and sweet caramel notes, buttery with a wisp of smoke and some wood spice.

Finish…. Long, with a hint of smoke.

    Overall…. A fantastic Japanese whisky.

N: Barley, honey malt - rather thick and malty. Sherried sultanas, Big vanilla and caramel bourbon notes. Fruity and slightly medicinal but favours more the dessert fruits.
T: Citrus, honey malt, very Speyside like. Thick arrival, bitter/sweet, becoming thicker with the addition of subtle wood spices and pepper wood. becoming fresher before…
F: …vanilla cream develops but savoury sweet [cheesy] with pudding fruits with aniseed and fennel freshness
C: Very nice indeed. very Speyside like, reminding me of Tamdhu 10. Very broad mouthful and a fine balance but a little boring and ….Scottish!?

this version, bottled in 2011, is by far the best HIBIKI 21. Earlier batches are missing those intense and delicious ripe cherries and were less rich. Truly the Big Brother of the HIBIKI 17 (2011). Highly recommended! Sadly, this whisky is hard to get. Sold out in Europe and China. Bought my bottles at Shanghai for around EUR 130.

    My rating: 95 points
    • Nose
clean sherry; ripe dark cherries soaked in rum; rich and complex; perfect nose
    • Taste
smooth and creamy, good body at 43%. Very rich, same cherries and other ripe dark fruits; lovely intense honey sweetness, nice layer of barley and just the right amount of spices to keep the balance. Quite complex. No negative oak impact. A whisky to chew. Very delicious!
    • Finish
medium long; in line with the nose and taste; sweet barley and some pepper; neither sour- nor bitter notes. Very nice finale.
