A very stand-alone, complex and well-made malt, I am very happy about two storage bottles in the cupboard
    • Nose
Maritime saltiness, smoke, vanilla, dark fruits, all very dense and full
    • Taste
Oily, strong, smoky, dark fruit, dry and somehow sparkling, very own, but consistent in itself
    • Finish
      Long, oaky and fart-dry

Very alcohol driven, or actually: It gives me the feeling that the alcohol hasn't fully integrated yet. Maybe this should have lasted in a cask for a little more time.
    • Nose
      87 87
Red fruits, some wood smoke initially. A lot of alcohol punch, after some time very smooth.
    • Taste
      86 86
Sparkling, powerful towards pretty intense. A bitter alcohol layer, red fruits, some orange and peach.
    • Finish
      86 86
More smooth now, red fruits, with an ashy touch. Pretty long, heavy finish.

pleasant enough nose on red fruits and peat with a touch of sulphur that doesn’t disturb too much.. palate is however a tad too hot and oak is dominant.. it becomes liquor sweet and syrupy thick with some water.. some bitter notes in the end.. i’ve had better
    Longrows!

A lot of emotional value. This was the bottle that made me take my passion serious! Damn this is an awesome dram. One of the best I've tasted so far to be honest, emotional value aside.
    • Nose
      98 98
      Intensity - 7,5
      Richness - 9
Raisins, cherry, oak, vanilla, leather and a whiff of peat
    • Taste

      Intensity - 8
      Richness - 8
      Oily, spicy and sticking mouthfeel.
Red fruit, cacao, raisins, vanilla, smoke, biscuits and a whiff of peaty saltiness.
    • Finish
      98 98
      10+ seconds.
Very long and very complex, with tones of fruitiness, peat and biscuits.

Nice malt. Despite the high alcohol content I like the pure almost better. Maybe I got a little too much water. The longrow blends well with the wine. Everything beautifully integrated. Here the smoke is even more discreet than on the 18s (WID: 81670).
    • Nose
Red berries. Blueberries, blackberries. Wine cellar. Distinct wine aromas. From the smoke is almost nothing to feel. Strawberries and damp moss from time to time. A little more smoke with water.
    • Taste
Very sweet and syrupy. Now the strawberry comes through properly and that is ripe. Caramel and toffee. Orange. Again hardly any smoke. Not quite as sweet and syrupy with water.
    • Finish
Blood orange and some wild berries. The oak does not hide either. Light smoke. Drying.

  14. Falnor scored this whisky 87 points Connoisseur

This one is bold, adventures and still got enough layers to be interesting when to bottom of the bottle is in site. Classy, don't mind it's just 14 years old.

  15. Calmar scored this whisky 84 points Connoisseur

A rather unfortunate specimen in the series of usually interesting representatives of this series, very active barrels, both basic and finish, suppress the base, excessive amount of oak, imbalance of components, emasculated finish, with time some of the problems disappear as far as the disclosure, but overall is not impressive.
    • Nose
Open, calm, raw wood, wine tones, grape juice, drying plaster, moist wood dust, light notes of varnish and solvent, warming reveals noble treated wood, notes of pipe tobacco, apple paste.
    • Taste
Powerful, rich, oak motifs with a tangible wine influence, oak is very much, it dominates and interrupts the rest of the ingredients.
    • Finish
Wine-oak with spicy sour, slightly astringent, a bit bitter ginger in the background, in general it is rather poor and monotonous, only after a while it starts to open up, deeper and finer wine components, red currant, cranberries, orange peeled orange appear.

    • Nose
desert wine, wood tones, cherries, raisins, lemongrass, very slightly smoky, plums, brown sugar
    • Taste
toffee, syrupy, desert wine, cherry, mocha, grape seed, brown sugar, plum, peach

  17. Woodsmoke scored this whisky 88 points Expert Senior

Smoke and Oak in Balance...some sweetness. I like this one very much. Not to mild and not to strong. U can taste all flavors step by step, its complex but it does not overwhelm one.
    • Nose
      Blind tasting:

      Medicine and smoke.
    • Taste
Sweet. Smoke. Oak. Intensive. Tabac. Mouthwatering
    • Finish
      Long and Warm.

  18. PunxsutawneyPhil scored this whisky 94 points Expert Senior

Close to perfect. The spirit, the bourbon aging and  burgundy finish are in perfect balance with the wood influence. All covered in the earthy, mossy Longrow peat. Brilliant.

[November, 2012]  Together with friends I emptied a bottle that I bought for 63 Euro in March, 2012.

    In my old rating system (ten scales that translate into WB points: 50 - 66 - 75 - 80 - 82,5 - 85 - 87,5 - 90 - 92,5 - 95) I scored it 87,5.  My notes state a strong winey profile that most probably is not to everybody's liking - but I like it...

Tasting Note by The Chaps at Master of Malt

    Nose:
Nutty and quite chocolate-rich, with notes of buttertoffee,
cranberries, jam on toast, a hint of gunpowder, and some maple spice.
Palate: Sweet oak on the palage, with hints of toffee popcorn, salted butter, star anise, sweet cereals and a little Christmas pudding.
Finish: Oaky and spicy, hints of nutmeg, ginger and toffee apples.

a wonderful longrow that blends well with the red wine barrel
    • Nose
sweet, red berries; sour notes; dried fruit peel; red apples; with water there is some smoke
    • Taste
strong start; sweet; again berries; some smoke; wonderful sweetness with water but still a lot of power
    • Finish
warm; full; now there is more smoke; medium to long; still berries

    • Finish
      Medium long, spicy, dry

  27. Gloin scored this whisky 88 points Expert Senior

definitely needs water, otherwise the alcohol dominates too much, very similar to a sherry barrel whisky
    • Nose
Dark fruits, cherries, caramel, sweet, a hint of smoke
    • Taste
very similar to the smell, red wine, sweet, syrupy and liqueur, again cherries
    • Finish
long, with some oak, a bit bitter dryness

  28. Tom na Gruagaich scored this whisky 85 points Connoisseur

Nose: Very little at the beginning. Distinct wine notes, spicy notes of wine, a touch of peat and what dirty, like leather, which probably causes the combination of longrows maritime notes with various wine finishes. Still sweet, spicy and very pleasant.
Mouth: very sweet and very strong. The wine shows its full fruit. In addition clearly bitter oak notes. Tingling with the alcohol.
Finish: Vinous, slightly sulphurous, some pepper. Dry smoke and dry oak make the whisky quite tart, but the sweet-sourish notes of wine add some to the finish.

Conclusion: again a top Longrow. They manage to harmonize the already extravagant peat with the various wines. Must recognize.

This is a good powerful whisky. Had a couple of drams right now and I am just loving it.

    (Rating interval: 83-88)
    • Nose
Peat smoke, plums, pickled ginger, plenty with leather, some fresh tobacco, some red apple and basett wine gums. After water some raw sugar and bbq-sauce appear.
    • Taste
The texture is quite chewy, full-bodied, strong, sweet and sour, bitter marmalade, again leather and oak. Peat smoke and salt water. After the addition of water it becomes more vinous, with spear mint notes and brown sugar.
    • Finish
The finish is long with sour plum, black pepper, orange peel, bitter orange and peat smoke. It becomes dryer with water and the peat smoke more substantial. The spearmint is still there.

    from a purchased sample
    • Nose
Red berries and malt. Very obvious red (fruity) wine influence. Jammy
and some fudge. Smoke in small quantities, bags of oranges - juice and
sweet zest, almost as from some flan dessert. Twigs and a few briney
notes. Ginger and pepper. Chocolate in weak coffee. Eventually something
butyric and warm - a presence that grows. Not quite sure whether it's
      from the fruit or malt.
    • Taste
Warm and smokier/waxier. Malt and fudge with usual red wine notes.
Leather and varnish. Acrid and a lightly farmy quality in the
background. Bitter oak. Espresso after a custard. Red fruit is again in
there, but rather buried by the dark and bitter. Lots of ginger, chili,
      and pepper.
    • Finish
Very interesting, though also rather disjointed. I liked some of the
wine influence, the execution just wasn't all there. Good
chocolate-coffee and a drop or two of cherry extract. The spiciness
gives some warmth, too. Promising, though it falls short for me, and
what was with the butyric nose?

  32. ASWhisky scored this whisky 88 points Connoisseur

    great ... an exciting whisky
the ease of the wine finish
cleverly combined with peat and barley
one wavers between delicate light tones and rough spicy ones
the finish is long, surprising and very good
I give 91 points for the finish

    mmh, I like them indeed
    • Nose
the dark rich color irritates my senses
the flavors are much tenderer than expected
      I'm trying for wine finish
Barrel, strawberries, a hint of nutmeg,
      behind it moorland
    • Taste
Soft on the palate, strawberry, again nutmeg, Tartaric acid and tingling, some salt, he gives me the feeling of having a dry, slightly sparkling Rose wine with a strawberry in my glass and strong canapés with salt and spices,
    • Finish
again barrel, a lot of salt, a bit bitter, spices, smoldering fire
Malt sweetness and peat smoke ... mmmh ...
      >>> at the end fruity tender strawberries !!
      Like a little dessert

  33. markjedi1 scored this whisky 83 points Connoisseur

    The sulpher stays
within the borders of the acceptable, making this still a very nice dram.
    • Nose
      It is immediately
sweet on the nose. Raisins, toffee, caramel, dried apricots. Some leather and
dark chocolate. The peat is rather discreet. After a few moments, the
association with warm krieks will no longer leave me.
    • Taste
      On the palate, this
translates into slightly sour stuff with some liquorice and, well, sulpher. It
is somewhat winey on grapes, but the krieks return. Some plums too. And a pinch
      of salt.
    • Finish
      In the medium long
finish, it tends towards leather; somewhat drying and spicy.

  34. KayMeertens scored this whisky 87 points Connoisseur

Could be mistaken for a sherry-matured one. It's really different from the standard 14 YO. It reminds of the Hazelburn Sauternes Wood but can't beat that one.
    • Nose
Toffee, raisins, peat, dark cherries, dark chocolate, leather and a heavy variant of red wine. A bit of sulphur, but it doesn't disturb me.
    • Taste
Toffee, cinnamon, dark cherries, prunes, melasses and nutmeg... in an old wine cellar. Again an acceptable level of sulphur.
    • Finish
Warming with dark cherries, prunes, mocha and cinnamon.

  35. Erik Elixir scored this whisky 84 points Connoisseur

N: sulphur, silver onion, smoke, peat and citrus
T: citrus - lemon, pepper, smoke, cherry coke, some liquorice and sweet fruits - grapes
F: smoke, ashes, gunpowder, fruits?, nuts and baked egg with pepper

  36. Sonett scored this whisky 84 points Connoisseur

    • Nose
      Peat, toffee, apricots and vanilla
    • Taste
Fruity like well matured plums, marmalade and figs (sort of but not exactly
    • Finish
Medium long with fading fruit and a dust of smoke when swallowed

  37. Willie JJ scored this whisky 83 points Expert Senior

Slightly spoiled by the sulphur, but otherwise good stuff.
    • Nose
Toffee and a hint of sulphur
    • Taste
Light toast and marmalade, sugared and jammy. Very intense, but not massively peaty.
    • Finish
Burnt toffee, treacle and a lot of cinders.

(Blind) Springbank Tasting with Ranald Watson (02.2012), plus second 'open' pass on another occasion.
    • Nose
nice malty note, mineral w some pebbles, wine, old wood, caramel, slight smoke, leather, also - a slight sulphur swamp-gass note occasionally (moldy old red wine casks with  the old wood & wine notes), (87 / 82)
    • Taste
mealy sherry character with some sour-ish raisins, tobacco, slight lit gunpowder note, also some faint pineapple & coconut, (88)
    • Finish
turning quite leather-y, some black pepper, cooked plums, dark chocolate, strawberry jam, somewhat mineral/dry but also some sulphur notes occasionally. (84)

This is very nice, but a bit "hot".  I was a little worried that it would be full of wine and cherry notes, but was pleasantly surprised to see that the peat tamed those flavors.
    • Nose
Dusty cellar.  Smoke.  Diesel fuel.  Chocolate pudding. Cranberry sauce.  Sulphur.
    • Taste
Sweet, then peat smoke.  Hot cinnamon and nutmeg.  Asphalt. Strawberry jam.  Hints of vanilla in the distance.
    • Finish
Smoky and spicy hot.  More cinnamon. Oaky and a little dry.
