The newer Bladnochs are less than desirable but if you find one that was distilled in the 90's then I would move on it if the price is right. It's piece of history. Frankly, I think of Bladnoch as a mothballed distillery. David Prior might as well be Richard Pryor. He takes short cuts when it comes to the time honored tradition of distilling malted barley spirits . . . even though he himself might be privately into "spirit cooking."

One thing is certain: Prior's whisky speaks for itself, and he has no Prior counts of making anything worthwhile before he bought Bladnoch Distillery in 2015. He's just a whisky heathen passing himself off as royalty. I'm not averse to trying new things, and so who knows what the future holds.

These days, everything in the OB line of Bladnoch tastes to me as though artificial (chemical) sweetners are being added. I'm not saying definitively that they are, but the whiskies smell and taste that way to me. And, no, I'm not crazy about Prior's decision to go NAS on everything OB except the older spirit that Prior didn't make but rather inherited when he bought the distillery. The old "pre-Australian" Bladnoch 10 wasn't great, but it certainly wasn't bad, and I can't say that about Samsara or Adela.

Seems younger than it's 21 years.  Not bad, but for the price I think there are much better Bladnochs available.
    • Nose
Very unexpressive nose, at cask strength little more than spirit.  Even with water it's all on hay and cereal, with just a hint of vanilla and apples in the background.
    • Taste
An initial burst of apples, pears and vanilla fades quickly revealing a peppery mid-palate joined by a little, not unpleasant, bitterness.  Lacks complexity.
    • Finish
The moderately long finish is dominated by white pepper and then finally fades to a nice fruity sweetness.

  3. Sonett scored this whisky 84 points Connoisseur

    • Nose
Lots of vanilla then pears herbs and hay. finally a slight nose of oak
    • Taste
fresh wood and acorn, sweet vanilla quickly turning to peppery spices
    • Finish
Long finish with fading pepper drying off to an oaky aftertaste
