A rich and complex dram. Not a sherry monster as one would expect as the
bourbon casks bring in some clean and light notes of creamy vanilla,
toffee and butterscotch which lift the mood. An excellent example of a
savoury whisky with a stunning balance. Appears to be much older than
just eight years. A lovely start into the large GlenDronach whisky
range, wonderful quaffable, simply great. Unfortunately, this beauty is
no longer part of the distillery's current portfolio.

    • Nose
Very pleasant and rich on the nose with dark cherries, rum soaked
raisins, orange zest and lingering sherry flavours. Creamy custard
arrives with toffee and butterscotch notes. There's gentle spice in the
back with oak, a hint of wood polish and cinnamon.
    • Taste
Sherry and dried dark fruit - dates and raisins in particular - are
present in abundance. Rich and creamy with delicate toffee and lingering
vanilla. This is followed by a lovely spicy touch of oak, nutmeg and
cinnamon. Dark chocolate coated oranges emerge with a delicate whiff of
marzipan and walnuts in the back. Delicious!
    • Finish
A medium long, sweet and warm finish. Very mouth-coating with dark dried
fruit and buttery toffee. Turns into slightly bitter flavours of black
tea, dark chocolate, nutmeg and lingering oak spice with delicate
      walnuts.

WITH WATER: Water tames the sweetness, lightening up the
flavours with the bourbon influence coming to the fore. There's
increased spiciness and earthy notes on the tongue with more alcohol
coming through. But still rich, intense and quite lively. The finish is
medium long, warm and fruity with prickling oak spice.

Very decent for this age and price.
    • Nose
Milk chocolate, vanilla, Christmas cake, lemon and orange peels, some nuts.
    • Taste
Very light and sweet. Not too complex but very enjoyable. Chocolate, toffee, vanilla and a fruity punch of citrus and berries.
    • Finish
Medium long, delicate, a slight spiciness with a fruity side dominating.

  7. Gearmailteach scored this whisky 83 points Expert Senior

A typical Glendronach, albeit fresher and more fruity than others through its youth.
    • Nose
Fruity and sweet, lemon, apricot, peach, dark berries. But malty with hints of honey and almond. Fine oak in the background. The alcohol is noticeable. Likewise a light, Glendronach-typical vanilla-ginger note.
    • Taste
Young and juicy. Fresh citrus and berries, then malt, chocolate and honey, oak is added. Again the vanilla-ginger-mix with Butterscotch.
    • Finish
      Mitellang, dark chocolate and caramel.

For the price and the age really delicious (3+)
    • Nose
Sherry and something metallic, dark fruits.
    • Taste
Again sherry and grapes, a bit impetuous and not quite balanced.
    • Finish
      Long and warm.

Probably the most fruity whisky ive tried to date the only whiske that equals this one in fruity notes is the Glendronach 14 years old Sauterne finish however this whisky has a fruityness better suited for christmas while the sauterne finish is a fresh and floral early spring/summer whisky, hints of marcipan are stronger here as well as the hints of oranges vanilla, caramel, and chocolate

For it's young age this truely is a lovely whisky! Only the body shows the age but nose, taste and finish compensate that very well.

Very good value for the money.

I like this one much more than the 12yo. It´s way better balanced and surprisingly mature for its young age of just eight years. Really good job there from Glendronach!

A very good "entry level" for Glendronach. I had bought it by chance, having no priors and I was not disappointed. A single honest malt, both sweet, bitter and with a good body, which I would not hesitate to take a drink once the first one finished. And that may be its big drawback: it goes down very well!
    • Nose
Fruits (oranges, mandarins ...), sweet spices, cinnamon, lemon, some notes of pepper and a little sugar.
    • Taste
The palate follows the nose: fruits, apricot jam (?), Spices, cinnamon, marzipan, chocolate, caramel, small note of vanilla, butter, honey, hazelnut.
    • Finish
In continuity: chocolate, marzipan, vanilla, fruits; influence of wood, floral, a little peppery, spicy, hot, dry, a little sweet. Neither short nor long.

  14. Igor scored this whisky 85 points Expert Senior

    • Nose
Apricot preserves, pineapple, confiture, deep-fried bananas, lemon lolly, candied fruits, lacquer, peach jam, tonic water. It turns slightly coniferous, quinine?, with cedar tones, bark, hints of pine nuts, hazelnut. Faintly soapy, slight clayish twist there, straw, maybe some exotic fruit (papaya?), subtle polished wood, and mild honey.
    • Taste
Intense, quite vivid, medium-bodied palate. Mildly bitter, mineral, mint tea/herbal potion/chamomile, just a little saltiness to it. Caffe latte, white chocolate, a tiny drop of buckwheat honey, golden syrup?, macaroons, coconut chips, butter/cream, chocolate ice cream. Then I get some pickle there, orange tinge and bitter wood, liquorice, chocolate biscuits, the whole outburst of citrus.
    • Finish
Warm, well-balanced and durable finish, with rind of lemon, salted peanuts and mildly bitter vegetable nuance - thinking of tea leaves. Spiced, gingery sensation lasts, orange and lemon zests now mingle into whirl with allspice, dried cloves, pepper/aniseed?, cinnamon quills.

  15. granella2003 scored this whisky 87 points Connoisseur

    • Nose
Start of marzipan / walnuts, citrus and apricot
    • Taste
Start a bit shy, with mixed fruits and evolve into large notes of butter, toffee and caramel
    • Finish
Long finish, with shades of chocolate.

  16. The Macallan scored this whisky 79 points Connoisseur

A nice combination between the bourbon and sherry wood. For an 8 year old this is absolutely a fabulous dram. Nice as a aperitif or even with coffee afterdinner!!
    • Nose
Rich, light smokey, wood and rich in dried fruit (reduced: some sherry, exotic, mango, sultana's and gingercake)
    • Taste
Sweet, full, chocolate and vanilla coated oranges (reduced: Malty and cookie/cake like)
    • Finish
Pleasantly long with woodspices [cinnamon] and liquorice wood (reduced: ginger, some wood and warming)

  18. Erik Elixir scored this whisky 83 points Connoisseur

N: chocolate, fruity - strawberries and orange, citrus, malty, sugar, salty - bacon and nuts
T: orange, butter, coffee and fudge
F: marzipan, dry, light sherry influence and floral

  19. alectron scored this whisky 82 points Connoisseur

upfront sweetness, nice sherry influence, but there`s a lot of bourbon-y vanilla sweetness as well. Not bad, pleasant & at a bargain price, but a bit simplistic sweet. (83)

Single dram note (Dramfest NZ 2012)

  20. I_SPEY scored this whisky 87 points Expert Senior

Colour: gold. Nose: Sherry, fruits, woodsmoke and flowers. The smokiness is rather  big and  the nose is very nice! Mouth: bodied, with oranges, marmalade, chocolate and toffee. Finish: long, bitter and spicy. Comments: a very interesting whisky, with an extremely nice body. All perfectly balanced!
