Tasted it head-to-head with the 1996 edition. Definitely more one-sided in its sweetness but very enjoyable as well.
    • Nose
A big layer of lemon candy sweetness over the peat. In the long run a light beer-like maltiness.
    • Taste
Peat, sweet orange and a little cabbage.
    • Finish
Peat, sweet lime and Printen in chocolate.

A decent bottle of Caol Ila - it's nothing essential but bad definitely not
    • Nose
Combination of more acidic fruits (lemons, oranges), woodiness and peat. It is very smooth and delicate.
    • Taste
After the fruit introduction, there is a strong woodiness - it is sweet chocolate, of course peaty and spicy. After a while the salinity appears and the fruit component returns. The flavor is really full of aroma and nothing to do
    • Finish
Reverberation is primarily woody, toasted toast, hint of old skin, peat, salt, and a good dose of spices on the tongue that just will not disappear.

For its money (65€) a very nice Caol Ila that can be fully recommended.
    • Nose
nice peaty smoke with a bit of sweetness. Nothing super special but quite pleasant
    • Taste
Sweet and smoke and some herbs and oak - not much more but I like it a lot
    • Finish
      Same for the finish! :-)

A bit softer than the 12 yo and I think more balanced and measured. I love this one.

    (Rating interval 86-89)
    • Nose
It's spicier than the 12 yo, some peat smoke, brown sugar, grass, herbs, malty syrup, soft but wonderful nose.
    • Taste
Still sweet and spicy, brine, orange zest, bitter citrus like grape fruit, sweet licorice and smoky wet grass. Quite thin texture, light mouthfeel. It becomes sweeter and maltier with water.
    • Finish
The finish is medium to long in length, maritime with sea salt, sea weed, spicy peat smoke, still some burnt wet grass and pepper corns, both black and white.

This isn't like Laphroaig, this is more gentle, more relaxed. It's more suggestive than anything. Would prefer it at higher alcohol, might give it a bit more kick‏. As it is, it's like a femme fatale ... in training, in everyday clothes.
Kick the alcohol up to 46% or better yet cask strength and she'd be in full revealing silkdress with makeup. And a gun.
    • Nose
Llime/lemon peel. Honey. Sugary sweetness. Wee hints of mint. Smoke. Peat. Wee hints of sherry (yes, I know it's not finished in a sherry cask, but still)
    • Taste
It's an all out evaporated attack from the middle of the mouth and all the way back to the throat. It hits the palate, tongue, everything except the front of the mouth.

Again, lime/lemon peel. Sugary sweetness. Smoke. Peat. Wee hints of salt/pepper, but not a lot.
    • Finish
The peat lingers.‏ But in a very very lovely way‏. Hangs around for quite awhile, but suggestively.More sensual‏More sexy‏Buuut also slightly weak.
