Tasted at the distillery in 2012 - one of five samples, including a 20+yr old straight from the cask. This one really stood out for me, big vanilla, huge malt. Reminded me of some of the Glenlivet Naduras I was into at the time. Time was limited and I still have the bottle I bought at the time - so yet to really taste this one, but different and in my view well worth a look at. (Ralfy is a big fan of the unpeated Caol Ila - see review 215 ... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yfCLjkuy9oo&t=113s  )

I like the taste of this unpeated Caol Ila. It's my subjective favorit single malt of this distillery!

Nose

Bez vody - med, vosk, vanilka, banány a dost alkoholu

S vodou - opět med, vosk, vanilka, sušené fíky a švestky, opečený toast

Taste

Bez vody - med, vanilka a strašně moc alkoholu

S vodou - vanilka, ovocné tóny, medový koláč, nástup slanosti, kořenitost, alkohol
Finish

Bez vody - v dozvuku karamel a vanilka, čokoláda a opět alkohol

S vodou - v dozvuku karamel, káva, opečený toast, spálená guma, alkohol
Comments

Bez vody prakticky nepitelné - pro větší hraní by to chtělo větší vzorek, ale pití to není rozhodně špatné - špíš na mě už moc silné

Nose

Aggressive nose (64% ABV isn't playing around). Calms down with a few minutes of rest. Lemon zest. Green apple. Cereal notes, almost like sweetened porridge. Boiled sweets. Butterscotch candies. Lotus biscuits. A woody vanilla note and some lychee and gumballs(?!) shows up after a while in the glass.

Taste

Chewy seaweed. Toffee. Sweet woodsap. Dry woodspice. Peaches-n-cream oat-so-easy. Smint lemon drops. Bit of earthiness if you roll it around enough.

Finish

Long. Salty. Dry wood. Sweet toffee. Candied pineapple. Dry white wine.

Comments

This is a really nice dram with a very interesting play between the sweet toffee-like notes and some dry woody and salty notes. If this were a Ben & Jerry's flavour it'd be Chubby Hubby.

My Collection Happy to swap samples with anyone in the UK/EU/Canada, pm for details.

Nose

Wonderful nose and not at all dominated by alcohol despite the high ABV. Fresh citrus, green banana, artificial lemon like in kitchen cleaner detergent, unripe green pears, some cereal and in the background you can really find some wonderful sweetness, cotton candy and even light treacle.

Taste

Full-bodied and warm. Sweet and sour at the same time. it's rolling around on the tongue while constant delivering flavors of Granny Smith apples, lime juice and white sugar. With water (and it needs plenty) more vanilla oak appear with marshmallows, still a lot of fruits, a slightly bitter arrival take charge over the sour. Not as much mineral as in the standard 12 yo but it is there in the background.

Finish

The finish is long and warm with bitter citrus, cotton candy flavor but not as sweet, black pepper. A second wave adds some nutty flavors (hazelnuts or walnuts, not sure?) and a hint of pepper mint.

Comments

This is a demanding whisky to play with for hours in the glass. I had my bottle for over a year and it was something new to discover each time I went to this whisky. It was a sad day when the bottle was killed.

Limited edition, this version of Caol Ila is a peated malt not surprising. is bottled at cask strength. Aroma and taste betray the young age of this single malt, but the large aromatic structure brings us back to the world of Caol Ila. Since 2006, this version is bottled aged in American oak barrels that previously contained bourbon.
A Caol Ila peat not new, it is different from 8 to 10 years from: less rebellious, with panache and good balance. The nose is lively, fresh, crisp, malty initially but with the unmistakable notes of salty seaweed typical of Caol Ila.

"Distilled in 1999, the 2011 release of the unpeated Caol Ila 12yo is an
absolute belter - and amazingly easy to drink, even at its slightly
scary full strength of 64%. Bottled from first fill ex-bourbon American
oak casks, this was one of our favourites in the 2011 Special Releases."

Nose

Sweet.  Esters.  Vanilla fudge.  Banana creme pie.  Marshmallows. Malt.  Lemon zest.

Taste

Medium, but rich.  Lemon cake with butter cream icing.  White pepper.  Vanilla and some apples.  Milk chocolate.

Finish

Long and spicy.  Hot chocolate.

Comments

Far better than the 12 Unpeated from last year.  Highly recommended.   Relatively easy to drink, despite the 64% ABV.

In an interstellar burst, I\'m back to save the universe.
