[February, 2017]  ...another experiment today.  As planned for a long time already I did a side-by-side comparison of this very first release of the Laphroaig PX Cask versus a later one (all of them with a different brown label).

And the winner is:  As expected this very first edition is way better than all the later ones I have tasted so far.  It is a heavy, very phenolic dram that fits perfectly to the fat, creamy PX profile (of course, you have to love this profile - otherwise you should better go for something else).  It is a dram that immediately covers all your tongue and mouth and stays there for a long, long time.  You can still chew this whisky even after it went down your throat completely.  I would not trade one bottle of this first edition for a complete case of the later ones...

By the way:  The perfect background music for tasting this stuff the very first time is Jimi Hendrix - All Along The Watchtower (play it as loud as possible)...

[July, 2012]  Together with biking friends I emptied a bottle during a harley ride along the legendary route 66 (I rode a trike what was a lot of fun).  I bought that bottle in an airport duty free on my trip to the US.

[May, 2013]  Together with friends I emptied another bottle that I bought for 62 Euro in November, 2012.

[October, 2015]  Together with friends I emptied another bottle that I bought for 79 Euro in October, 2012.[February, 2017]  I emptied another bottle during my holidays in Denmark that I bought for 62 Euro in November, 2012.

    In my old rating system (ten scales that translate into WB points: 50 - 66 - 75 - 80 - 82,5 - 85 - 87,5 - 90 - 92,5 - 95) I scored it twice 90 and twice 87,5.  Please see detailed review below.

Big fat sherry meats big fat peat. Lovely combination and it works very well here.

    A well-balanced drink. A little of everything.

Smoke, of course, first you feel smoke, oiliness, smoked mackerel on a fresh newspaper, plums, raisins, apricots smoked to the state of dried fruits.
    • Taste
      87 87
The taste is sweet, smoky, enveloping, full of smoked dried fruits.
    • Finish
      87 87
The aftertaste is buttery, sweet and smoky.

  5. Kilo1 scored this whisky 90 points Expert Junior

Good soft whisky, less sweet than the updated release, but overall harmonious and tasty.

  6. Dede scored this whisky 86 points Expert Senior

Not bad, but too sweet for my taste.
    • Nose
Oily and medicinal peat, maritime influences (iodine, spray), but also a little grenadine, even a hint of milk chocolate.
    • Taste
The peat is powerful and immediate. But the sherry develops in parallel, on sweet notes (candied cherries). We do not find so much the taste of PX as a memory of its sweetness, with a thick side in the mouth.
    • Finish
Long, peaty, it leaves a pasty mouth.

  8. Baanaanaabob scored this whisky 87 points Connoisseur

Quite good, maritime peat, sherry influence is subtle, not very complex

  9. Calmar scored this whisky 90 points Connoisseur

Perfect combination of the spirit of Ayla with RH, sherry hides in the background, almost invisibly, in fragrance, delicately mixed and opens in taste and dominates in the aftertaste. Excellent balance, monolithic alloy base and barrels, a wealth of shades and halftones. An inspiring mantle, which at the same time prompts both careful search and analysis of the components, and to a complex enjoyment as a whole.
    • Nose
Smoke, smoked products - smoked pork ribs, cheese sausage, pork ham, shish kebab, in the background - bandages, medical rubber - gloves, stoppers, a little iodine, seas, again smell smokehouse, in general - velvet soft, meat, warm.
    • Taste
Continuation of the aroma against the background of sweet dried fruit, raisin canvas, delicate, delicate, very rich, rich in shades.
    • Finish
Here, the first fiddle is played by sweet raisins and spices with a small admixture of smoke and smoked products in the background; long and long, calling again to bring the sniffer to the nose, bring the smoke to the fore and repeat the cycle ...

  10. Thermidor scored this whisky 79 points Connoisseur

The PX finish feels tacked on and not properly integrated. In my humble opinion Laphroaig and sherry casks work better as a full maturation than as a finish.
