so much character can stand a stumble
    it may have to be
    to be unique and attractive
a fascinating mix of past, age, a lot of barrel, sherry and the touch of a bourbon note

and the last drop in the glass smells so seductive
as if to tell me I have more secrets ...
    yes! I'm in heaven

thanks for the nice gift, wow!
    • Nose
unmoved: glue note, sherry keg, smoky dusty walnut shells, raisin meat, cold mocha with brown sugar, crema catalana
      wonderfully soft warm notes

aggravated: pungency, darker strongly cooked prunes, slightly burnt,
sweet dusty raisins, wet herbs in decay, slightly biting adhesive note,
      some cucumber barrel,
    • Taste
      Getting hot, slightly hot
      with full plump raisins
      very light alcohol note
      walnut shells
      hot mocha with caramel sauce
Sweet fruit and hot mocha turn into an intense spicy memory on your tongue
    • Finish
Long slightly bitter oak with ripe plum peels eats into your palate
This exotic wanderlust stays in your mouth for a long time
      like in the old days
      like deep Spain
      how dark and sweet
      how hot and spicy
      like passion and danger

A sherry board (Refill Butt should be questionable) - which unfortunately can not completely hide his Grain component
    • Nose
First of all, glue, which evaporates quickly, but some of the ester remainders are permanently preserved - thickened plum, rum raisins, dark chocolate, furniture polish, floor wax, leather, tobacco, cherry compote, a full sherry bread, caramelized sugar
    • Taste
The aromas in the nose are completely confirmed as a taste in the mouth - it is joined by a heavy red berry sweetness - the artificial touch of the Grainanteils remains constantly subliminal presence
    • Finish
Sherrylast with red forest berries, the wood remains discreetly in the background

Hmmm, difficult, an absolute dream for many sherry lovers, the nose is also very tasty, but quite one-dimensional (dark soup) and the finish is a bit too much pencil lead for me.
    • Nose
Noticeably dark, red fruits and blue ones too, blackberries, blueberries, ginger, sour cherries, pomegranate, mulled wine, cinnamon, nutmeg, saffron
    • Taste
High-quality cherry brandy stored in barrels, pomegranate syrup, blackberries, ginger, cumin, nutmeg, cinnamon, spicy but not edgy oak and liquorice, eucalyptus and mocha, sultanas and plums, blood orange, liquorice, hint of pencil
    • Finish
Pencil, plum, liquorice, pomegranate syrup, anise, nutmeg, long

    http://kaypingers-whiskyblog.de/frontend/fullarticle.php?id=225 Color: mahogany
Nose: Absolutely fat sherry and red wine with dark cherries, ingenious salty spice and some furniture polish. There is a touch of rubber gloves in the glass, which harmonizes great here. Oranges, tobacco, vanilla, plum jam, overripe elderberries, leather and dark herbal teas. Just delicious!
Taste: Thin structure, but with brute power! Dark, creamy spiciness with lots of fruit, oak wood and furniture polish again. Inferior is a peppermint freshness that goes hand in hand with chocolate, cocoa and tea notes. Perfect and incredibly fascinating!
Finish: Long - creamy, partly fruity, partly with fresh herbs. Wood, a lot of wood? Yes, but perfectly integrated. With notes of tea, dried herbs, plums, elderberry, vanilla and dry leather. The notes of elderberry and plum jam stick for an eternity on the tongue.
Note: A hammer part and that with 46 years drum storage! The wood flavors are tailored to this blend. Truly an Adelphi hit!
    94 points (nose: 94 / taste: 95 / finish: 92)

    Tasting Notes by Adelphi;

1 of only 499 bottles from cask no. 6778
There are many extraordinary traits to this cask. Firstly it is from a distillery which no longer exists (closed in 1992); secondly it arrived in its original Harveys Bodega Spanish shipping butt complete with red seal; thirdly it still sports a hefty 52.3% alc/vol despite 46 years of maturation; and last, but by no means least, we managed to extract 499 bottles from the cask after all these years of angelic participation. The term “single blend” relates to the fact that Lochside had both Patent and pot stills, allowing them to distill both grain and malt whisky. Occasionally these makes would be blended at birth into single casks to mature together – this is one such cask. The European oak has given it a fantastic dark rum colour - and an extraordinary balance if you estimate a 50-50 malt-grain blend. Red fruit, cherries damsons, toffee, balsamic vinegar, dried figs, dates, sweet and balmy. Opulent, but elegant. Light, but luscious. Enigmatic. Italian white truffle, hazelnut and dark chocolate. Quite superb but we recommend that you do not reduce with any water.

This is truly a feast for the senses! It won a gold medal at the Malt Maniac Awards 2011. Rightfully so! Not cheap, though. Around 350 to 400 EUR. But what a whisky!
    • Nose
Ah, the nose is a sherry bomb, exactly as I had hoped. Furniture polish, polished leather, brown banana, all kinds of berries both red and black. Quite some coconut. Wonderful sherry influence. Coffee, whipped cream included. Raisins on syrup, dried prunes. Mon Cherie bonbons. From the spice cabinet I remember eucalyptus and nutmeg. Even some broth. The cherry on the cake is a wonderful trace of smoke.
    • Taste
On the palate, I am first reminded of rum (the aged quality stuff, mind you). Very spicy with loads of tannins from the cask. Sherry bomb, like I said. Very fruity and syrupy. Candied sugar, liquorice, lemon grass, orange peel. Does not need water, despite the high ABV.
    • Finish
The long and spicy finish brings back to those typical Mon Cherie bonbons to the mindâ€

I know I should love this because its Adelphi. I know I should love this because its Lochside. I know I should love this because its been put into wood in 1965 and it's 46 years old. But sadly for me, the overpowering cask influence wasn't a very enjoyable experience. For me. Bear in mind this was only a sample and over oxidisation may have played a huge part in my enjoyment.

Lots of sherry and oak, red fruits - raspberries & redcurrant.
A leathery note, hints of bananas, some spices - ginger ,cloves and nutmeg, almonds and after a while a whiff of smoke.
    • Taste
      91 91
mouth coating, tannines, the spices coming up, ginger and nutmeg, a hint of eucalyptus, leathery, a "sweety" bitterness like burnt sugar.
    • Finish

very long and intense, dark chocolate and again the "sweety" bitterness.

    Lochside 46 yo 1965/2011 (52.3%, Adelphi, single blend, cask # 6778, 499 bottles)
Just like at Ben Nevis, the former owners of Lochside (Mr. Hobbes) used
to distil both malt and grain on the same location, which allowed them
to come up with some genuine ‘single blend’. So this one is a blend of
Lochside malt and Lochside grain that was ‘married at birth’, in 1965.
Colour: deep amber. Nose: starts like some old quality bourbon, with a
little varnish, coconut and banana, but switches towards strawberries
and raspberries after a few seconds. Liqueur-filled chocolate, then more
ham (Spanish bellota, and I’m not joking) and beef stock, mint tea,
leather polish, old sherry, a little soy sauce… Well, it’s not ‘a blend’
as far as the nose is concerned, it’s more focussed than that. Quite
brilliant! Mouth: a tad strange at first sips, there’s a lot of oak
influence but it remained rather smooth and rounded, not unlike some old
rums. Something clearly medicinal (cough medicine), then old
Grand-Marnier, touches of lemon and lemongrass, a little ginger,
liquorice, candied chestnuts… And then the same notes of liqueur-filled
chocolates that we had in the nose. Also a liitle rancio, old cognac
style. Finish: rather long, even more on liqueurs and chocolate, with a
soft spiciness (cloves, cinnamon). Comments: very excellent. It’s not
easy to tell this is a blend… nor pure malt whisky. More than just a
    curiosity anyway! SGP:661 - 90 points.

Color: reddish brown, cola Nose: very old, dark, profound sherry nose, dark chocolate, cocoa, cherries, very nice Body: medium / oily Mouth: mild, ripe sweet notes, dried fruit, dark chocolate, dry oak notes Finish: long, mild, sweet at first, then a dry mouthfeel, slightly bitter woody taste Conclusion: 92P., Very nice dark sherry bomb, wood very clear, not as fresh as the sister Cask, could also go through as pure malt.

The nose is rich and rum-like with dried fruits, brown sugar, burnt vanilla, dates, and a hint of orange peel. The taste is thick, rich, and oily with orange peel and hints of ginger, almonds, and nutmeg. The finish is very long with almonds, brown sugar, and a hint of orange peel. Outstanding!

Nose: heavy sherry, red berries and burnt caramel, toffee, heavy oak, coconut, burned toast
Taste: Very oaky, heavy sherry, dark sweetness, cherries, licorice
Finish: eternally long, great, dark sweetness, licorice, back dry with oak
88 points - for me a little too much sherry and oak

  21. aby scored this whisky 92 points Connoisseur

i don't know why this should be refill sherry. According to the leaflet this 'arrived in its original Harveys Bodega Spanish shipping butt complete with red seal', so i do think this is first fill sherry.

  22. Sonett scored this whisky 93 points Connoisseur

This is one of those bottles that will last for a long time as a few drops is what you need to sit exploring the complex nose for hours.
    • Nose
It takes a few minutes before it opens up but then there are a lot of dark fruits. Raisins, Dates, Figs, Dried apricots, nutmeg, cinnamon, rum, coffee, oak. A bit of varnish and furniture polish wax
    • Taste
Fruity sherry at first, then a oaky slightly bitter almond taste. Spices grows and takes over the fruitiness and the oak.
    • Finish
Medium long to long finish going from spicy chili pepper to a lightly bitter oaky finale

This is a vatting of Lochside grain and malt at birth. The ratio of grain/malt is approximately 50/50. Something as rare as a very old "single blend"
    • Nose
There is a bourbonish nose to this one. Distilled maize. It works perfectly with the sherry and dried fruits. Behind the varnish and furniture polish we get red currant, strawberries, raspberries, cherry, plum, red apple, blue berries, rum & raisin, balsamic vinegar, prunes, figs, leather, caramel, honey, banana, coconut and ecucalyptus.
    • Taste
Very fruity sherry. Its a bit oaky, with cherry liqueur, lemon, dark bitter chocolate, dark rum, liquorice, hazelnut, anise, ginger and nutmeg.
    • Finish
Long finish with orange, clove, cinnamon and chocolate.
