  1. Kaleva scored this whisky 87 points Expert Senior

Decent whisky, typical Springbank with perfumery and gently smoky nose with a hint of sulfur and obvious sherry influence. Requires diluting, water makes smoke more intense. Although I do not like sulfur, in this case it doesn't spoil the impression but rather completes the overall composition. This bottling is quite hard to find nowadays but if found - it worth tasting.
    • Nose
Sweet, slightly perfumery, sherry, dried fruits, toffee, wood polish, sulfur notes, light smokiness, some farmy notes. Water opens wax notes and intensify smoke
    • Taste
Sweet, slightly oaky, rubber notes, wine, white pepper, lemon cake, fried bacon
    • Finish
Medium-long, getting dry fast, nutty, with sooty and meaty feeling

    Aroma:
aromatic with smoke and fine sherry notes, a hint of damp barrel when swirling, light wood notes, slightly fruity, trace of sulfur, touch of wood polish, dried fruits.

    Taste:
warm, slightly spicy with wood and sherry components, slightly spicy, now delicately tart oak, hint of barrel / coffee, spices, tart-sweet-tart, slightly perfumed.

    Departure:
With delicate tart oak notes, spices, a little smoke, slightly woody, white pepper, finally a hint of malty ...

Has edges and corners but also character and can be liked ...

An exploration in my mouth. One of the best Whisky i ever drank.
    • Nose
      Blind Tasting:

Middlesmoky like Black powder. I smell a Barrel. Oil. Touch of smoky brakes. Dry fruits (Dattel).
    • Taste
Sweet...light burning on the tongue. The burning is like a tingle. Full mouth and interesting. Oily. He has charisma. Smoke is very minimal. That's fireworks in the mouth.
    • Finish
      Oak. Dry. Long

[February, 2012]  I had this dram during a "Springbank" tasting at Bonn.

    In
my old rating system (ten scales that translate into WB points: 50
    - 66 - 75 - 80 - 82,5 - 85 - 87,5 - 90 - 92,5 - 95) I scored it 87,5.  My notes state water is not needed.

Definitely not without faults, especially the (very mild) sulphur/butyric acid note at the start I found off-putting, but quite an entertaining dram.
    • Nose
sherry, tobacco, caramel, overly ripe red grapes, chocolate,  a touch of sour / milky notes in the back slightly leaning towards butyric acid which seem to dissapear after a short while. (85 / 77 w butyric acid)
A bit later: mint, old books, some leather, red apples, also the (for me springbank typical) pebbles & flints mineral notes come through now, (87)
Later: seems to sway back to the former sherry & caramel notes after a bit. Weird.
    • Taste
dense, starch-y/mealy sherry with some dried plums, wet tobacco leaves, occasionally upfront a perfumey / artificial sweetness with a cardboard/paper touch, apple esters, yeast-dough pastry, then salty licorice (68 w perfumey/paper note, 83 without)
Later: upfront perfumey sweetness seems to disappear. (85)
    • Finish
quite a long & changing tail, heavy red wine, more licorice but now the sweet sort / allsorts, a touch of lavender, leather, coal smoke, plum pastry (86)

I've got the TastingNote for heaps & waiting for the third attempt to complete it. But as a divine I would not call that synonymous. But not as grotten-bad. If I remember correctly, it is slightly sulfur-containing, but everything in the frame & that vinegar-like plus rotten eggs may indicate a spoiled bottle at Nils?

    @Nils:

Excuse me, what's up with you? To forgive 35 points for this divine Springbank, I do not think so now!
Can you even say with absolute certainty to have tasted the contents of this bottle, so you have actually opened the bottle yourself? Because this collection is not part of your collection. Maybe someone just wanted to fool you or peed you in the glass! I am absolutely speechless ...

A very special Springbank, absolutely great! I really love this one...
    • Nose
As soon as the Cork is drawn, it is noticeable. Rich fruits in the foreground, particularly evident are ripe strawberries. A
mild gum-like influence making room for Marzipan and with honey roasted
almonds in the midst of a traditional Springbank earthiness.
    • Taste
Childhood memories! Bubbly Coke shower candies left a sweet Tickle on the tongue immediately followed by fruity jelly shots.
    • Finish
Incredibly long and surprisingly dry with landings of roasted coffee beans and more healthy earthiness that show up in the flavors.

What a great stuff, the ultimate dram for sherry-heads! Slainte...
