SMWS Notes (English): This distillery has been out of production for most of its 124-year existence, and its make has never been bottled by its owners. The Spanish oak cask has given it a rich colour of antique wood with magenta lights yet only a hint of mature sherry on the nose. Unreduced it is mellow and vaguely maritime; slightly oily, with armagnac and medicinal overtones. The addition of water brings out the sea smells (warm beaches, plastic ropes, tar). The flavour is smooth and easy to drink, with some medicinal linctus and a shaving of wood; sweet to start, with some liquorice in the finish. A rare malt, perfectly matured with a delicious but unusual flavour.

SMWS AT note summer 2003 list:

    Mahogany and sea
This distillery has spent most of its 124 years in hibernation, and the brand has never been bottled by the owner. The Spanish barrel has given it the intense color of old wood - with magenta lights and a hint of sherry in the scent. Undiluted, it is mild and tastes vaguely of the sea; slightly oily, with Armagnac and medical overtones. The addition of water brings out sea scents (warm beach, plastic ropes, tar). The taste is soft and pleasing, with a little cough syrup and wood shavings. Sweet at first, with some licorice on the finish. A rarity, perfectly matured, delicious, but unusual in taste.
