An amber colored whisky for lovers of a powerful complex whisky. Not exactly a whisky for beginners.
    • Nose
You immediately smell that this whisky has been in an Oloroso sherry cask. Very spicy, and the notes of Christmas cake, orange, blackcurrant come to the fore.
    • Taste
In the mouth this whisky is very powerful, but pleasant to drink. the orange and black currants come back immediately and you can also taste dried fruit and chocolate. It is best to add a little water and then you will taste even more, such as some sweet notes of fruit and then a slight smokiness will emerge.
    • Finish
the aftertaste is very long and intense. There, the chocolate and the sherry clearly return, but then a little honey also emerges. Very pleasant!!

The label says "Spanish Oloroso Sherry Butts", but I don't think they mean "made from Spanish oak".

This is hugely influenced by American oak (vanilla, marzipan, big honey sweetness) and very creamy and clean throughout, with little oak spice and almost no tart flavors getting in the way.

Seems noticeably older than more recent batches.
    • Nose
      88 88
Maraschino cherry, marzipan, date, old oak, licorice, honey-glazed ham, cherry-flavored cough drops, chocolate-coated raisins, vanilla and icing sugar.
    • Taste
      86 86
See above, plus blood orange and a pinch of nutmeg, cinnamon, and pepper.
    • Finish
      84 84
Empties out rather swiftly. What's left is a perfectly inoffensive but none-too-impressive impression of cherry cola and coffee grounds.

Hmmm I don't know I would not praise this whisky (batch 37) as much as many others do with the a'bunadh series and maybe others are even better. Maybe a different drinking strength is also better than my 45% (my personal favorite strength for whisky).
I would simply rate it as good quality in any case and top in terms of price / performance, but in the end it is too unbalanced for me. "Sweet meets rough" you have to be in the mood for.
    • Nose
      60 60
Undiluted: Very strong, honey and chocolate sweet raisins. Due to the high alcohol content, there is a smell of alcohol over everything, which dampens the other rumors and is easily noticed. Other dark fruits can also be found, but weak and few.

Diluted to 45%: alcohol veil completely gone, but also some of the previous intense aroma. What remains is a sherry whisky that is still sweet and raisin-stamped.
    • Taste
      60 60
Diluted to 45%: sweetish towards chocolate, (fruit) sugar and honey, relatively fresh and tangy whisky tasting like fruits like cherries.
    • Finish
      60 60
Becoming slightly woody and bitter, then tending towards dark chocolate, this leaves a slightly bitter basic tone together with sweetness as a contrast compensation.

Another nice oloroso in this line, oak is not too exaggerated. 88/89.
    • Nose
      88 88
Spicy sherry, milk chocolate, raisin, forest fruits, orange peel and antique leather.
    • Taste
      89 89
Powerful and bittersweet. Sherry, tannic oak, coffee, antique leather and orange liqueur.
    • Finish
      88 88
      Long, spicy, bittersweet.

Chocolate, raisins, cherries, blackberries, raspberry, orange, figs, leather, sherry, dates and sulfur.
    • Taste
Chocolate, fruitcake, raspberry, cherry, blackberry, fig, sherry, leather, coffee, orange, dried fruit, almonds, oak and a hint of rubber.
    • Finish
Long, chocolate, raisins, dark fruit, oak, little pepper, almonds, sulfur and a little bit of leather.

  16. St. Pauli scored this whisky 89 points Connoisseur

A rather excellent a'bunadh, as it is fruity and wasn't overpowered by the oak, which often leads to bitterness.
    • Nose
A proper sherry matured dram. It has the smell of dunnage warehouse, a bit mouldy even, but balances this with nice fresh fruitiness of orange, and dried fruit of date. Next, there is an oaky side, not too old, but certainly not too young. It's all well-behaved and polished. Further: coffee roast, cocoa, and even a slight hint of mint.
    • Taste
Easy to drink, not a slap in your face as other a'bunadhs might have. It's liqueur-alike, with nice sweet notes of ripe oranges. It has this sugary side too. Next are raisins, almonds, coffee, medium bitter chocolate and polished oak.
    • Finish
It stays rather fruity, with dried fruit becoming more prominent (raisin and date), and pepper and oak playing 2nd and 3rd fiddle.

    Aberlour a’bunadh (Batch 37)

    59.6% abv

    Score: 89.5/100

Time to settle in with another batch of our favorite young cask strength sherry bomb. No sherried malt out there packs anything near the pound-for-pound punch power of a’bunadh.

This whisky, for those not in the know, is Aberlour’s small batch (but likely not as small as in early days, I imagine) beefcake. The distillery releases a few editions each year, of slightly varying strength and quality. The quality variance, in my experience, is relatively small however. I’ve tried many batches, from the early teens through the mid forties, and found them to be remarkably consistent. Yes, there are flavour differences, but those nuances and subtleties are what make the malt beautiful and keep us coming back.

Gaelic for ‘the origin’, a’bunadh is Aberlour’s attempt at producing an old school style malt similar to that which would have been produced in early days. Hence…the origin.

For the newbies out there…this is not liable to be one of the first whiskies you reach for at your local retailer – unless you’ve been doing your homework, that is – but I promise you it will be a game-changer when you do finally grab a bottle. It is immense enough to open up an entire world of possibilities in the whisky world, but also approachable enough that nearly anyone should be able appreciate its sweet, sweet depths.

So let’s check in on a’bunadh. Last batch reviewed was 28. This is 37. Most recent I’ve seen on local shelves is 44. Though I’ve tried many of the other batches, they haven’t been in the right controlled setting suitable for review. No fear though. Many more to come in the future.

Oh yeah…did I mention…at a whopping 60% (give or take) this whisky is always an asskicking heavyweight.

Nose: Gooey, stringy toffee or caramel. Coffee…much like a Caramel Macchiato or something. Figgy. Touch o’ brimstone, if you get my drift. Fudge with a touch of cherry. Oranges. Clove, cinnamon, nutmeg. Oak and honey.

Palate: Unmistakeable. Spicy. Caramelized sugars and deep threads of caramel. Plump figs and other mixed dried fruits. Again a bit of cherry. Alcohol-soaked cherry, that is. Very syrupy. Almost cough syrup heavy. Brazil nut…walnut…hazelnut…or some mix thereof.

    • Nose
Aromas of different spices, praline and spicy orange with the rich deep notes of oloroso cherry.
    • Taste
Orange, blackcurrant, dried fruit and ginger with outliers of dark chocolate enriched by the cherry and oak. Sturdy body but also creamy.
    • Finish
Robust and intense bittersweet notes of exotic spices, dark chocolate and oak.

Great whisky, I like it much more than the others I tried (34, 35).
    • Nose

Spicy, very strong, confident. Great style.

Aberlour at its very best. This is complex " old fashioned" Abunadh.

Enjoy the complexity and wide range of spices. Cocoa, chocolate, lemon and top quality orange zest, x mas slovakian pastries, superb finish

    Lovely Abunadh Batch

In short, it's really good, super integrated alcohol. Fruity, and really clean. With a little water, more citrus fruits are extracted. Yum

  27. Erik Elixir scored this whisky 87 points Connoisseur

N: some smoke, medicinal, dried fruits, tannins and leather
T: raisins, tannins, plums, iron, bitter and acid like a Islay
    F: lingering pastry with pepper

  28. Ikkakumon scored this whisky 88 points Expert Senior

Simply delicious (it is better to add a few drops of water)
    • Nose
The nose, powerful and alcoholic, is very strongly marked by the Sherry.
    • Taste
Unlike the nose, alcohol is not (too much) and an impression of sweet sweetness. Sherry dominates clearly, quite complex, with fruits (plum, red berries, ripe apple, a little citrus), spices, a malty touch and a hint of bitterness.
    • Finish
Long and invigorating, spices and always sherry.

"Batch 37 of the astonishing Aberlour a`Bunadh. Described as a respectful

toast to Aberlour`s founder, James Fleming, this stunning whisky is

produced in the style of the 19th century whiskies once made at the

distillery. It is beautiful whisky, aged in Spanish Oloroso Sherry

Butts, with neither colouring nor chill-filtration. Just pure,

unadulterated whisky, with an incredibly spicy flavour. We love it."

I Love the power of Aberlour! It has great taste of sherry and fruits.

This also is a powerful scotch so I don`t recommend it to new whisky

users. It is good to gain a palate that recognizes the difference

between cask strength and some that are less ABV like 40% or 43%.
