Tropical, tea notes, exotic spiciness, meets my taste exactly and halfway rare in a Port Ellen, reminiscent of some 1960s dream Caol Ilas. Great.
    • Nose
Interesting, not super complex, but a bit peculiar, a very specific own fruit acid, not lemon or lime, more white grapefruit and still very young pineapple, some kiwi, some aniseed, chamomile,
    • Taste
White grapefruit, pineapple, star fruit, kiwi, lime zest, tropical honey, lychee, hint of wasabi, turmeric, ginger, lemongrass, green apple, aniseed, eucalyptus, yuzu, cumin, fennel tea and matcha, smoke extremely subtle, incense sticks more
    • Finish
Anise, turmeric, ginger, pineapple, grapefruit, long, intense but round, matcha

    A real "gem".
Already had a few Port Ellen, but this one is right at the top. Unbelievable how elegant and balanced it comes after only 18 years, how much fruitiness there is. He could also be 20 years older.
    Really delicious malt!

The aroma starts with smoky maritime notes, characterized by fresh citrus fruits, charcoal and sea air.

After that, the smoke fades into the background relatively quickly and reveals a highly delicate fruitiness that is difficult to describe with the usual tasting vocabulary. A tropical sweet compote with a very fine texture and hints of lychee, pineapple, grated coconut, star fruit and anise.

With a little more time, the smoke becomes stronger again and marries this fruitiness, creating a slightly rustic, warming overall picture with cinnamon apples, ripe apricots and glowing charcoal.

At first I didn't think the aroma was too complex, but with a little patience you can "dig in" well. In any case, the quality is excellent.

Powerful onset, intense smoke, charred oak, fresh spices, salt and pepper. Then it gets fruitier: Yellow jam, tropical fruits again and spicy-fresh herbs such as lovage complement the maritime character wonderfully. The whisky is 50% pleasant and voluminous on the tongue.
    • Finish

The Port Ellen becomes a bit drier in the finish, but remains fruity and a bit spicy. Again, the fresh herbs and friendly, sweet citrus are striking. Overall long-lasting and very round.

Port Ellen 1982 - 2000, 50% alc. Bottler: Lombard (Jewels of Islay).

Nose: This Port Ellen starts off sweet and smoky. I find chimney ash next to mango and pineapple, some lychee and caramel. The fruit aromas are pleasantly clear, the peat smoke is quickly forgotten. Now smell crunchy summer apples, some thyme and aniseed, green tea and slightly burnt apple pie in the background.

Palate: The smoke is initially clearer again, comes across as slightly salty and dry. The sweet fruit aromas then take over, again pineapple and mango, but also tangerines and a dash of lemon juice. In addition, a tart herbal note, some savory and sage, a delicate touch of eucalyptus.

Finish: Medium length, slightly fruity, some ash and various kitchen herbs.

Conclusion: A harmonious and pleasant Port Ellen, quite clear and harmonious line - anything but a heavyweight. 87/100 points (2022).

Quite clean and maritime style Port Ellen with a just a bit of soot and a touch of oak besides the salty-sweet smokiness.

[October, 2000]  I had this dram during a Port Ellen rarities tasting at Rolandsbogen.

In my old rating system (ten scales that translate into WB points: 50 - 66 - 75 - 80 - 82,5 - 85 - 87,5 - 90 - 92,5 - 95) I scored this 90 points.  My notes state be careful with water, some drops are okay but more water will flatten it.

By the way, at this tasting you could buy this excellent Port Ellen bottling https://www.whiskybase.com/whisky/1927/port-ellen-1981-tb for 189 Deutschmark
(95 Euro), or this breath-taking Brora https://www.whiskybase.com/whisky/2388/brora-1981-tb for just 10 Deutschmark more (99 Euro).
