A textbook Lagavulin, everything is right (except for the price). Rich aromas combined with a wild character. Click here for a detailed review:

I drank this as part of a vertical (current 16yo, White Horse 16 yo, Jazz 2013, Jazz 2011) in my own home. Let's not talk about the 16 yos because those are definitely a step below. Compared to the 2013, this Jazz 2011 definitely feels more satisfying and gives you more of that WOW! feeling. Again, the great sherry, a healthy amount of Lagavulin peat, the freshness, the perfect power and ABV all mixed in so harmoniously... I can't imagine any Lagavulin being better than this one. I'm going back and forth between 94 and 95 points, which are amongst my highest scores ever for a whisky.
    • Nose
A bit of alcoholic bite on first nose of whisky in glencairn but after a few minutes... the typical lagavulin peat, but there are fruits as well.. lots of power but still quite balanced.
    • Taste
Wow! Wow! Wow! An extraordinary marriage of peat and sherry, with quite a bit of fruits (plum, cherry, grapes) mixed in. Incredible attack and the balance is exceptional. This may be equal or even better than the famous 21yo from 2007... more oompf and more sherry. Any whisky can be a sherry bomb, but not any whisky can be this well-integrated with the sherry. Bottled at the perfect moment.
    • Finish
Exceptionally long... you cannot get better than this... lots of peat, power, and well-integrated sherry lingering on and on and on...

Hm ... is already a very good whisky. But he is not particularly outstanding. Blind tasting.
    • Nose
Medical smoke, bacon, salt & harbor, later some sweet vanilla
    • Taste
Ashtray! Salt, strong warming alcohol, tongue tingles, walnut
    • Finish
      long and smoky

    Orange tasting 3.0 18-08-2016 Roelof & JJ
    • Nose
Meaty - sausage, pickle and spices - pepper. Ashes, peaty, some nuts and some sourish notes - zure zult.
    • Taste
Very tasty withh ashes, curry gewurz, oily and briny.
    • Finish
      Ashes, peay and seaweed.

Tasting notes here: Color: Old Gold
Nose: Burnt wood and tobacco combine with fresh peaty sherry. Sweet, malty and powerful peat smoke. Wow, the nose lets you guess what taste experience will follow!
Taste: What a gigantic start. Very complex. Notes of iodine paired with huge peat smoke. Now sweet malt with hints of vanilla and fantastic sherry. Totally balanced !!!
With water: less smoky, but slightly malty.
Finish: Laaaang, very laaaang. A combination of smoke, medical notes and a huge dose of peat. Dry sherry flavors surrounded by oakwood notes. A straightforward, uncompromising departure that seems to have no end.
Rating: The madness! Thank you, Iain, for this ingenious peaty malt that was bottled just in time. If you love Lagavulin, you will spoil this whisky. Was the Lagavulin year in 1993? For me, the best that I could taste to date from this distillery. 97 points
