Good complexity, the alcohol is well integrated, actually no water needed despite the high abv, very drinkable - very good!
    • Nose
      92 92
Fresh oranges, nuts and raisins, spices, cloves, little cinnamon, pepper, little old and dusty wooden cabinet, sherry, some dried fruits, pipe tobacco, whiffs of smoke - very good
    • Taste
      93 93
Oily, creamy, little punchy, good sweetness, more nuts, raisins, dried dates, figs, more dusty but good sherry wood, nutmeg, little dark chocolate - great
    • Finish
      91 91
Long, warm, spicy, woody, more chocolate

Dried fruits, raisins, sweet spices, orange, nutmeg, varnish, fruity with a nice sherry influence, very nice.

  7. The Macallan scored this whisky 91 points Connoisseur

A fabulous version from Adelphi, a (controlled) sherry bomb!
    • Nose
Oloroso sherry, pungent, gentle but yet a sherpness in the nose, oranges, dried fruit, spices, christmas cake, makes me happy (reduced: some pungy estery notes, oranges, floral notes, still sharp in the nose, over time more aroma)
    • Taste
Sweet, sherry, fruit, drying oak (reduced: soft, chocolate notes, woodspices and yet so full of flavor)
    • Finish
Woodspices (cloves, nutmeg) with some fruit, again drying (reduced: more chocolate in the finish)

    Tasting Notes by Adelphi;

1 of only 219 bottles from cask no. 4319
A rare ex-sherry European oak hogshead had given this a gorgeous antique polished mahogany hue – one of the most appealing natural colours we have seen in a whisky for a long time. Beading fades fast, but big blebs. A first scent of madeira cake, with maraschino cherries; then a trace of Oloroso sherry. An unctuous mouthfeel and a sweet start, then tannic-dry – European oak, but without any sulphur: long warming and pleasant at cask strength. A drop of water opens and freshens it, with polished wood and pine resin; more than a hint of over-cooked Xmas cake. A slightly teeth-coating texture, a rich, tannic taste and a long finish with lingering dry sherry. Superb!

Transferring previous Note (2011.12.11) content into a Tasting Note
    • Nose
      slightly
alcoholic/stingy on the nose, red apple ester, dry raisins, grassy,
honey from the fridge, warm candle wax, autumn leaves, fruit tea (for
children w lots of dried berries),  slightly burnt/charred wood as well
      as dark wood/antiques/furniture polish,  (87)
      Later more fruit
      platter-y, slight milk chocolate & caramel/butterfudge  Fruit
intensifies after the first 20-30 minutes & berry aromas get more
      pronounced & fresher. (92)
    • Taste
quit dry & woody upfront, also quite some salt, then dried fruit & tea (85)
    • Finish
some chocolate, more tea aromas (fruit tea as well as red/rooibos &
some black), slightly over ripe red apples,  waxiness comes up again,
faint but long slowly fading tail. (89)
Later (+90 mins): turning dryer & more woody on the finish,  (84)

    enjoy it neat!
    • Nose
      without water:
old balsamic vinegar, there's alcohol, cinnamon, sugar, black pepper, black berries, leather, motor oil, dry sherry, earthy notes, schwarzwälder-kirschtorte, old and dusty wood, grassy, dark fruits.

      with water:
more leather, more dusty in general with green apples.
    • Taste
      without water:
strong, dark fruits, a dark sweetness comes along, oak, black tea, a wee leather, oil, salt, nougat, alcohol well integrated.

      with water:
      sharper, drier, more nuts.
    • Finish
      without water:
black tea once again, dark berries, drying, long, nougat.

      with water:
shorter, a touch of smoke and oil, plums.
