  1. LeChiffre scored this whisky 89 points Connoisseur

A great experience this old malt. Due to the peppery-spicy oak as a counterpoint to the fruity sweetness, the malt does not lack power despite the 43%. Unfortunately, the taste and finish is a little less than the wonderful, intense, fruity nose, but still very tasty.
    • Nose

wow what an intense sweet fruit basket with a tropical touch; yellow fruits; Banana; ripe apple; Mango; Honeydew melon; delicate vanilla; beautiful spicy oak notes lie behind it
      - wonderfully intense fruity nose
    • Taste
      88 88
sweet start; yellow fruits; Pears; Apples; some passion fruit; significantly less intense and fruity than on the nose; then the oak becomes increasingly peppery and spicy and emphatically in the foreground
    • Finish
      88 88
peppery-spicy; tender fruit; tart oak aromas; easily becoming dusty dry

Very intriguing notes, starting with coconut shavings and banana, before leading on to notes of honey-glazed sweet potato, polished wood, warm applesauce, and even a layer of soft smoke. Very integrated and balanced on the palate, carrying through all of the flavours seamlessly, before a slightly dry herbal finish.

    Tasting Notes:
    - Strathisla 1963 and Strathisla 1972 side-by-side
    - Poured into two glencairns and sat for one hour
    - 1cl tasting samples from The Perfect Measure set
Overall: slightly better than the 1972
    • Nose
dusty leather, darker honey, light berries, overly ripe honeydew, less punchy
    • Taste
dark honey, sweet, berries, dry, oaky, peppery, buttery, burnt banana, creamy
    • Finish
medium, salty nuts, light spice, toffee, dark cocoa, ginger, sawdust, straw

Amazing power for a 48yr 43%. Old style whisky and cask that isn’t seen anymore. No where near tired. The palate is the best, where it truly comes alive.

Waxy, buttery, old style whisky. Honeycomb, soft herbs. Really great.

Very fruity, banana, coconut, marzipan, orange, furniture polish, great well aged old strathisla

I tasted this great drop at the Strathisla Rarity Tasting. He was the brightest of all 7 Strathislas. But also the best for my taste. Light dark fruits spice sweet everything alternately. Very flattering, it flatters the palate. Perfect ...... almost.

Ostensibly this is whisky matured in American Oak ex-sherry wood, which might explain why the colour is quite pale for 48 years of maturation. I wasn't that wowed by this. I don't appreciate woodiness in very old whisky (and thankfully this whisky kept it in check) but it did not click for me.
    • Nose
      spirity, dark hay, herbal
    • Taste
      watery, delicate, some floral elements
    • Finish
      medium

Fruity and spicy aroma, orange, rum, toffee,
mango, cinnamon, vanilla and dry hay. Vanilla sweet and fruity taste,
banana, apple, cardamom, pepper, toffee and almonds. Medium long, spicy,
    fruity and malty end.

A very old, excellent, mellow and fruity Strathisla. Now I know again why I like this distillery so much. Tnx Addy for the sample.
    • Nose
Delicate oak. Fruits of papaya, banana and strawberries. Mellow. Also flowery notes. Roasted almonds. Nice and complex.
    • Taste
Amazingly sweet and creamy. Lots of fruit again. Now more melon, pear and passion fruits. Toffee.
    • Finish
Cinnamon and ginger. Some peppery spices. Become slightly bitter at the end.
