This whisky is quite a revelation to me, I never had such an oldie from the sixties! The nose is to die for, and it's very lively on the palate. Far from the overaged oak juice I suspected it might be like, and it isn't 'oversherried' either. Unfortunately the prices for these kind of whiskies are beyond common sense nowadays.

What a joy to nose this one, it's so incredibly refined and layered! It's fruity at first, with uncommon fruits: star fruit (carambola), something like fermented citrus fruits, blueberries, and stewed rhubarb with sugar and raisins. It's also quite floral, but on the sweet side, almost bordering perfume. Fried bacon, balsamico and asparagus give it a lovely savoury edge. Not a regular sherry bomb!

It's very soft and juicy. The juiciness stems from the fruits: tropical passion and citrus fruits, rhubarb compote and apple treacle. The softness resembles Belgian praliné chocolates, the alcohol is totally integrated as well. It a bit spicy too, but it is far from an overly spicy and dry herbal dram I suspected an oldie like this one might be like.

Very long and gentle. It's creamy with milk chocolate and a load of sweet passion fruits and fermented citrus fruits. Some oriental spices peek around the corner, and ultimately give it a more oaky feeling. I also get some oxalic acid : the dry mouth feel you get after eating too much spinach or rhubarb. Sounds bad, but I liked it!

Sumptuous sherry goddess. More rounded compared to the 66. More wood influence in the beginning, but slowly disappears after a while. More aromatic, honey, chocolate, and getting more traction over time. Slightly farmy and earthy, which is a pleasant surprise.

Gentle arrival on the palate, slightly less intense compared to the nose. Some cocoa and coffee, red fruits.

Bitter oranges, slightly dry. More aromatic and floral. Bit of herbs.

Very complex and mature sherry cask, not yet a sherry bomb but close to overpowered, the fine hints of leather are pleasant and don't bother me - overall great stuff!

Bags of dried fruits, plums, figs, dates, some nuts and raisins, plenty of cooked oranges, spices, nutmeg, cloves, acacia honey, pipe tobacco, some brown sugar, hints of (good) leather, dark chocolate, little cocoa, deep sherry wood - excellent!
    • Taste
      93 93
Oily, creamy, liquorice, good sweetness, more dried fruits, nuts, marzipan, toffee, dark chocolate, sherry wood, spices, tobacco, cocoa, hints of leather again but good, little tannic - great!
    • Finish
      92 92
Long, warm, more sherry wood, more tannic, spices, little herbs, tobacco, some leathery notes - very good!

You can pack a single barrel, but it is not necessary.
    • Nose
Italian balsamic vinegar, absinthe, tobacco, sage root, decayed to fluffy sherry bucket, cocoa, deep-baked mantening with Brazil, raisins, black currant, toffee, black fruit compote, amber walnuts, golden dates, A small amount of animal fat and condensed milk. In a word, I, black syrup, hit money.
    • Taste
The acidity is amazing, probably an O-barrel. Compared with the smell, there are many fresh Rosaceae fruits. The appearance of tannin makes the taste slightly thin. The latter part quickly turns into caramel, coffee grounds, tobacco shreds, nutmeg, pepper, and latex paint.
Strong, fat-like, slightly sweet, sour, astringent and bitter.
    • Finish
For a long time, a small amount of table salt, oak spicy and bitter, Coptis.

    Candied Syrup

After Bob’s taste bomb (Longmorn 1972) another pal – Jonas – offered me an even older Longmorn, also bottled for van Wees by Gordon & Macphail in their so-called Reserve series. This Longmorn from 1964 matured for a whopping 46 long years in the same type of cask – 1st Fill Sherry – and thus has the same compelling color. Let’s party on!

Very lovely, but soft, dark and sweet nose on plums, rum raisins, coffee and tobacco. Candied syrup galore. Cigar box, caramel, rhubarb marmalade and pear drops. Very seductive but just a tad to soft to blow me away completely. Don’t get me wrong: this is a stunning nose!

It is silky soft on the palate, but very tasty. The dark fruit comes first, followed by a soft spiciness of nutmeg and cloves, cinnamon and some pepper, but it never turns piquant. That’s just fine. The fruit offers up a bright note of oranges and chocolate, chewing tobacco and plum marmalade. A moment of silence ensues.

The finish is the clincher! Wonderfully long, spicy and warm, dark and sweet and simply delicious.

It comes very close to the 1972 that was bottled at 39 years of maturation, but the (much) lower ABV makes this one more docile. This is rather OMG instead of OMFG. But boy, Jonas, what a grand whisky indeed! Thx for sharing.
