SMWS Tasting Notes: One of our favourite malts, this, and becoming rare, since the distillery was closed in 1983, another distillery having been built next door and given its name. Between 1975 and 1983 it operated under the name of the east coast village where it is located. This is a cracking example of the make. The first impression is lightly medicinal, germolene, Elastoplast, surprisingly prickly for its age. Behind this, grows a rich dried fruit and fig-pig note, and a sherbet-like freshness: complex and positive. Water brings out the keynote for this malt of scented candlewax, but the fruit remains: stewed fruit and dried apricots. The flavour at natural strength is sweet and sour, with medicine, then smoke; with water it is sweet, full and creamy to start, with a nicely balanced middle and perfumed smoke in the finish. Beautiful!
