  1. thijs100 scored this whisky 81 points Connoisseur

Overall the anCnoc 12 Years is a perfectly fine, affordable single malt, but it also feels like there's so much more potential there.
    • Nose
Opens up on notes of honey and sweet barley husks, as well as a touch of lemon zest, chalk and warm butter. That's followed by apple skin and an assortment of white berries. Finally a candy-esque touch of marshmallows.
    • Taste
Somewhat sweet and rather easygoing with plenty of similarities to the nose. Some chalk, but mostly barley husks, lemons and also some bitter grapefruit this time around. There are some oak spices as well, but they are kept in check.
    • Finish
Short to medium with some vanilla custard, pears, wood and chalk.

anCnoc 12 years old, 40%, HSMSW.

I had this in the Ben Nevis, Glasgow in April 2019. “The ank nok 12 please” I said, prompting quite a telling off. Now I know it's pronounced "Annock".

Today in June 2022 I have a 30ml sample sourced online.

    Mid-tone yellow.

Aroma is fruity with some biscuity oak ... apple flesh, browned apple, a little grapefruit peel, crackers. Dried out mixed citrus. Quite pleasant.

    Body is fairly watery.

Taste is as easy-going as you’d expect at 40%, but not insipid at all. The spirit is still a little prickly and ‘salty’ on the tongue and warming on the swallow. The fruits are there again – half citrussy half pineapple cube sweets, hint of ginger, the linger is salty. Later on there’s some shortbread.

It’s not bad at all. Maybe it benefits from being the first dram of the evening, as it is for me today. Last time I scored it 79, significantly lower on my scale. There could be some batch variation, or it might be that this subtle dram is better suited to contemplation at home rather than a bar environment. 3.5/84

A whisky with characters! The citrusy is simply unforgettable. Overall spirit-driven, definitely deserves some more years in cask. Give the dram around 10 minutes to fully develop its flavours.

    N 24
Lemon juice. Mildly peated. Touch of new leather. Some fresh honey. Spicy and young malt. More confectionary sweetness and malt develop over time.

    P 23
Overall young, sweet, and spicy. The spices quickly smoothen out after the initial kick. Gradually the boiled honey with barley sugar sweetness dominated the palate, while the citrusy was carried through in the background.

    F 23
Short-Mid finish. The mildly peated malt flavour lingering with a touch of lemon zest citrusy to end.

Smell: initially according to defensive nose, fine balance, alcohol very well integrated, fresh basic tone, pome fruit, German. Pear tone, somewhat broad / little structure, with air vanilla, sweetish base, according to the malt note, German. Apple tone

Taste: fruity, dense, warm, spicy alcohol tone that is well integrated by the fruit, medium-sized. Reverberation, gives a strong boost for the 40%, baking spice

Color: lightening copper gold, narrow WR, clear

Conclusion: nice standard - uncomplicated, but never mundane - so far always far away from the broad public perception, which is of course good for the price!

Easy to drink, with fresh zesty and herbal flavours. Still perfect for a quite undemanding Summer night dram, as it tolerates even a splinter of ice.
The recent downgrading from 43% to 40% weakens a bit the taste, but doesn't make it easier. Anyway, it's always nice to come back to this from time to time, especially in Summer.

  53. matsteer scored this whisky 82 points Member Junior

For bourbon cask lovers who want to avoid those Sherry noted, this is a really nice bourbon expression definitely on the fruitier, fresher, lighter side. This could certainly be a go-to more budget friendly summer sipper.
    • Nose
      83 83
A nice complex nose. The sour notes other mention are here; to me it’s waxed lemon rind mixed with a white pepper, a little saltiness, and behind all of this is the malty notes and some digestive biscuits. A subtle hint of dry hay smoke in there too.
    • Taste
      82 82
On the palate it’s an evolution of all of the notes on the nose. Arrival is tropical fruit and that telltale coconut note comes through from the bourbon casks. The middle evolves into really malty biscuity middle notes. Finally this levels off and you’re left with the and the more sour lemon notes. Quite dry overall. It’s smooth but with a nice warmth to it.
    • Finish
      80 80
Good, length to the finish and it is really the sour notes that come through, alongside a little white pepper.

    - an honest straightforward single malt with slight corners and edges
    - not necessarily suitable for beginners, because the taste is still too alcoholic, despite 40% it looks very strong and powerful,

Distillery names can be a bit confusing: Knockdhu, Knockando - so let's just call this Single Malt anCnoc which is Gaelic for 'black hill'. Fruity acidity, sour berry mash and lemon zest are first to arrive on the nose, but there is a diverse mixture of fresh, floral and malty notes lurking in the back. The taste is spirit-driven, spicy and mildly dry with tropical fruits, heather honey and brown sugar. Just shy of medium length, the finish evolves with a touch of cinnamon, oak and licorice. A good 12-year-old entry-level malt which is flawless, easy-drinking and reliable.

Beats many other entry-level 12-year-olds. The minimum strength doesn't feel, the casks involved were nicely active, and a touch of leathery liquorice elevates what might otherwise have been a somewhat too middle-off-the-road, mainly ex-Bourbon-cask whisky into a higher stratum. Decent finish as well.

ENGLISH - Reading the very low alcohol content (40), I have always postponed the tasting. The nose responds nicely, yellow apple, perhaps cooked with a small dose of honey, very fragrant with fruit. after a while comes a scent of liquorice roots, very light, but balanced and precise. The flavor is essentially fruity, prevailing yellow apple, apple pie with a sprinkling of millefiori honey and then .... the licorice root returns to exacerbate (but with pleasure and taste) the soft flavor of caramel malt! Lightly woody finish. very good, a very positive surprise! Among the 40 alcoholic distillates among my favorites, I bought another bottle already! I would give it between 85 and 88 out of 100! I’d heard that anCnoc needs some age on it and this kind of proves this. The young character here didn’t really go down too well with me and above that there was this very dominant and unbalanced taste of ethanol all the way through. The chill filtration and 40% abv didn’t help either.

Again, the basic silence, from which you do not expect anything, proved to be quite good - the light and airy aroma turned out to be very rich and varied, the taste / finish is not so good, it's very unassuming, but the negative middle class does not cause a negative. Four An Cnoc’s by the sea include the ‘Cutter’ WB, 12yo WB, 16yo WB and the 22yo WB
N: Assured, sweet, cereal nose. There's a little more sherry in the standard An Cnoc 12yo now [2016] than i remember compared to the lighter, bourbon led bottlings from the 1990's. Descriptors include fuzzy sawdust, a little char and melon & elderflower wine. Good
T: Aah yes, that's the An Cnoc house style i identify with. It comes in lighter on the palate than indicated on the nose. Starts on honey then with a true honey-malt-sweet journey. Then sweet, yet sour too. Behaves impeccably.
F: Cereal sweet with a little waxy-dry mouthfeel and a touch nutty. Medium lingerings.
C: Fine in its own right, although the 16 seems to have MORE,.. of the same. WB

    C: Gold.

N: How much sweetness! Apricot, vanilla, white fruit, malt aromas entice us! Then we find the pomegranate and the freshness of lemon cake. These scents change to lavender, soap, incense sea breeze in the end.

P: In the beginning we find spicy, salty and malt. Then green wood, grain and toasted bread in milk barley. We find towards the end cacao cream, fresh flowers and honeysuckle.

F: At the tail end tongue we find again a pinch of salt that becomes lupines in brine. Then it changes to a taste fresh and sweet like green apple, and return to malt vanilla and Nutella.

This is a dram very changeable; there are many tastes that overlaps. This is a whisky which you can drink a glass or bottle with the same pleasure. It isn’t boring, at times may disappoint in other surprise, certainly it isn’t boring. It has an excellent quality / price ratio. Eclecti.

    • Nose

N: Pineapples and bananas begin the fruit parade with a honeyed, yeasty, malty, grainy and floral nature with biscuit notes. Overall a mild-sweet Speyside number with a not unexpected floral, citrus [lemon] freshness,
T: Sweet and light floral, although muted [a little weak] with some freshness and a cloying body but overall sweeter than its closest Speyside neighbours. Also theres a chalky maltiness.
F: More sweetness leaning to bubblegum, a touch of freshness, caramel, pistachios and chalky lemon.
C: Im really enjoying this bottle as i did the first dram I tried as a novice - at the Station Hotel in Stonehaven. Back then it seemed so sublime with its clean, mild sweet profile and light, white wine colour. Years later I translate this as a non offensive, honest, simple, value Highland/Speyside [Eastern Highlands] dram. Shame about the abv.

This was my first chill-filtered bottle that did not become harsh over time. AnCnoc guys took it easy on their stuff. A whisky for a nice, complex, sit-down. Never got too reeeaaaalllyy enjoying it, as the finish just couldn't at up to the lovely taste and the even better smell.
    • Nose
Punchant nose, a bit spirity but in a good way. What comes through is a mix of cereal and honey. A lot of depth here, well made. This nose could be just what I'm thinking of when I think of whisky.
    • Taste
They sprinkle it on my coffee in winter at trainstations. Quite herbal. I didn't get this at first, quite complex. The sweet, honey-cereal nose has developped into the taste of fresh, grainy bread. Melba toast. Savoury to some extend, bitter.
    • Finish
This is where it falls short for me. It's gone in a second, with all that remains.. oak. Like licking a tree. A very dry tree. A bit of nutty sweetness remains. Whiff of cereal. It's so short.

smells and tastes nicely from the fresh opened bottle, but make sure you keep it for some time. although it doesn't feel closed and compact in the beginning it still has the potential to open up. my rating was 81/82 for the fresh bottle and is 83/84 now.
    • Nose
caramelized apples, mixed honey, beeswax, a field of flowers, licorice. all pretty refined for twelve years of age. beautiful.
    • Taste
develops nicely on the same components plus some earthy and some bitter notes. pleasant. rather powerful considering the low abv.
    • Finish
over all medium length, yet slight tones of licorice and honey are lingering for quite a while.

Not as accessible as other entry malts. The age offers a good
counterpoint to the rather standard bourbon wood characteristics. Only
the bitterness is a detraction at times, especially in the finish.
    Decent, but not great.
    • Nose
      Apple
peel, honey, wet cardboard, citrus, and a touch of mint chocolate.
    • Taste
Good balance between sweet and dry. Alternating juicy overtones, like
oranges, and Turkish delight. Some bitterness appearing, together with
      guava and black tea.
    • Finish
Medium. Warming and slightly bitter. Grassy and fresh.

  132. HammerHead scored this whisky 80 points Connoisseur

A very fruity and floral nose with marzipan, turkish delight and honey. The taste has honey, vanilla, turkish delight and a cane surgaryness to it. The finish is short with a mild and soft honied liquorice feel to it.

    • Taste
It's fresh, fruity, on ripe apple, vanilla, honey, some wood. Not too dry.
    • Finish

N: Pineapples, bananas, honey, yeasty, malty, grainy, floral and biscuit notes. Mild sweet Speyside number, floral, citrus [lemon] freshness,
T: Sweet, although muted [a little weak] with a cloying body, light floral and some freshness but overall sweeter than its close Speyside neighbours. Also theres a chalky maltiness.
F: More sweetness, this time bubblegum, a touch of freshness, caramel, pistachios, chalky lemon.
C: Im really enjoy this bottle as i did the first dram I tried it at the Station Hotel in Stonehaven as a novice. Back then it seemed so sublime and i remember it being lighter in colour, cleaner and less sweet. Now I receive this as a non offensive, honest, simple, value Speyside/Highland dram. Shame about the caramel and abv.

    Scores a C+

    • Nose
This one here is quite clean and  a bit fresh in the nose. I find pleasant vanilla and dominant citrus notes, as well as some nice mint. Mild wood influence from the American oak! There is also some sourness which reminds me of Granny Smith apples, involved in some mint
    • Taste
Soft Vanilla and citrus again! Mild and clean with some coco notes. Some nuttiness! Brazil Nuts and Macadamia.
    • Finish
Quite short but pleasant. Again very mild with remaining vanilla!

  153. Igor scored this whisky 86 points Expert Senior

Certain bang for the buck in my opinion. The only shortcoming is that delightful bouquet fades too fast. Don't add any water thereby, except for drowning the fragrant aroma even quicker.
    • Nose
Light cream/vanilla, sugary, fresh and crispy, powdery. Lemon drops, muscatel, French pastry, muffin cups, field flowers, soil (after the rain), meadow, pear, green apple, waffles, apricots, praline chocolates.
    • Taste
Medium-bodied. Complex, smoothly clean, fairly warm. Lemonade, sweets, heather honey, cereals, pistachio-nuts, oak wood, cream, milk chocolate. Oddly - rubber? (burst balloon).
    • Finish
Of an average length. Warming, vegetal, refreshful. Juniper, conifer, bergamot, peppery, common sorrel, coriander, sea water. Pleasant anaesthetic effect.

Quite generic on the nose, but apple is definitely prevalent.
By comparison the taste was surprising and very drinkable; it tastes strongly of hard-boiled strawberry flavoured sweets.
It was better than what I was expecting, but probably still a little too sweet.

Good all-day whisky, you can serve this one with breakfast and will do good. Very sweet, but it doesn't taste like caramel. What in many comparably priced whisky's is a problem.
    • Nose
Very sweet with notes of honey, vanilla and coconut. Great bourbon matured whisky.
    • Taste
Not really complex, just really sweet. This whisky is quite good for the amount of money. Some notes of very sweet Belgium blond beers. With the tastes of hop, barley and mineral water.
    • Finish
Short with hints of barley, honey, coconut and just a little oak and peat.
