Whisky Reviews for Strathisla 1965 GM

    Superb complex and balanced sherry.
Could have gone to 93 if it was a little less heavy.
    • Nose
      92 92
Very closed nose at the base, but which opens magically after 45 minutes in the glass. Like respecting the rule of 1 minutes in the glass for each year is good.

We start with a gourmet fruit paste with red and black fruits, coated with candy sugar. Blackberry, plum, blackcurrant, currant. We start well.
We continue with sweeter fruits: date, fig.
Then a little barbecue, grilling, hot ash.
It's animal, we have a good dose of leather, wax paste.
      A little undergrowth, tobacco, cigar.
A little polish, camphor (tiger balm).
    • Taste
      93 93
In the mouth we continue in the line of the nose.
      Alcohol is perfectly integrated.
Leather, shoe polish cream. Always this alluring fruit paste, rolled in sugar on red and black fruits.
      Licorice, ash, burnt meat.
A little mushroom, tobacco, musk. It's well integrated and balanced, adding a nice tertiary dimension to this mouth.
    • Finish
      92 92
Long finish on fiery ash, barbecue, smoke, liquorice, cocoa, wood, fig and plum.

I wish I have more than just a 30ml sample of this. 93.5 points.
    • Nose
This is probably one of those whiskies that can't go wrong... right? Let's see! Upon first nosing, there's is mint, along with soft, elegant sherry notes with a bit of light soy sauce that I love in whiskies. There's also perfectly barbecued char siew. I am ready to go to town on this. Where are my chopsticks?!?
    • Taste
Perfect strength... There is definitely some oomph to this, unlike other older G&M Strathislas. Complex but quite precise in the attack. Small little explosions in your mouth. Old oak, old books, dark chocolates, raisins, dates. This is how you want your sherry cask to be, folks.
    • Finish
A bit drying at the end, but not egregious at all. Wonderful oak. Wonderful backbone. Would like the finish to last a bit longer, but you can't have everything in life.
