Whisky Reviews for Benromach 1981
4 users have left a review for this whisky and scored it an average of 87.80 points
- The palate turned out to be a tad disappointing. Although I like the flavour profile, it did lack in terms of fruitiness. I need a little more..
Quite prickly, as the alcohol is fairly noticeable, which is something that seems more or less common in these early 80s Benromach. But give it some time and this transforms into a layered whisky with plenty of subtleties. Rich notes of red dried fruits. furniture polish and leather, as well as stewed apples, freshly cut red apples, pear skin and peach.
Thick and syrupy, but with a bite. Lots of leather and cigar tobacco, and those two go hand-in-hand with black pepper, menthol and cardamom. A hint of raisins, but otherwise this is lacking a fruity layer. Adding water get rids of the bite, but makes it a little dry.
Drying, with menthol and leather.
- Single Dram Note.

sherry +, rum raisin chocolate +, overripe & slightly fermented apples +/o, woody spices +/o, starch-y/bread-y o, (88)
alcohol stands out a bit, wood, leather, sherry & raisins (84)
malt drops, more sweet sherry, wood turns spicy, faint smoke, sherry tail gets some pleasant caramel notes (87)
- A bottling of 1981 vintage Benromach, produced by the previous owners
before the distillery`s 1983 mothballing, but bottled by new owners
Gordon & Macphail. This is only going to get rarer, as there won`t
be any 21 year old whisky finishing its maturation until 2019, 21 years
after the distillery reopened in 1998.
