Being a rather young distillery (ESTḌ 1995), Isle of Arran is already producing some cracking good whisky. The use of high quality casks, 46% ABV, no chill-filtration and natural color gives you an optimal version of a Single Malt. Unlike other Island whiskies, Arran 10 features an unusual tropical character. On the nose, there are exotic fruits, such as papaya, melon and kiwi. Tasting mildly spicy and almost syrupy, faint hints of oak combine with cinnamon, sweet vanilla and complex fruity notes. It's a characterful dram with a gentle and bittersweet finish.

Two official Arran 10's today, both 2006[+] versions - one at 46%, the other at 57%

N: Familiar stuff. Barley leads the way with creme-de-nut, plenty of softened [oaked] wort and a little putty-meatiness.

T: Perfect strength. Orris root the main descriptor. Takes a while to switch from the quirky orris to a half decent, slightly salted, cereal maltiness, ooh and sweetened snow peas

F: A touch raw,....becoming more creamy with clear nitrous oxide from a whipped cream canister [excellent Ashley]. Becomes a little sweeter with some light carob. Fairly long finish with a nice, waxy-thin, barley mouthfeel coating and a creamy [almost whisked egg - merengue mix] yogurt at the death. Finishes most strongly.

C: Modest standard fair but not very distinctive. I did struggle with that arrival but the finish is fairly good, more so than the 57% version. Lets try that now. WB

Nose

Fresh and grassy, fruity (kiwi and lemon), vanilla and biscuits.

Taste

Very malty and fruity (kiwi again, but also apple juice). The sweetness is countered by green bell peppers, a subtle spiciness and a sligthly salty edge.

Finish

A bit waxy, with fresh and sour citrus fruits, aniseed, black pepper. Ends a bit dry and bitter.

Comments

A relatively light and easy to drink whisky. Let it breathe for a while, and it becomes quite aromatic.

A bit simplistic & delicate, if you like the more delicate whiskies, this is a great standard with a nice balance between malt, wood, sour & sweet.
