Really nice. A great style that is underappreciated. Simple and tasty, not much in the way of bells and / or whistles, but just good whisky. Ginger is such a nice note in whisky, one I tend to associate with a lot of Compass Box. The nose in general is just something I could smell for ages.
    • Nose
Ginger and honey. Very floral and greenhouse-y. Digestive biscuit. Really nice fruity mixture here, like a tinned fruit salad. All that lovely syrupy fruit with a good dose of ginger. Almost gets to smelling like a weak ginger beer. That’s just wonderful.
    • Taste
Apples, ginger, pears. Honey. Again, very floral. Surprisingly spicy. Honestly, even a little bit of sriracha, weirdly. Good amount of black pepper. A little chocolatey, almost. Decent mouthfeel.
    • Finish
Still quite spicy. Black pepper and oak. Lavender honey in the background. Apple skin. A bit too spicy on the end here, actually, but that’s alright.

Very promising at this age. Compared to the 2nd release, this one is much oilier. 84/85.
    • Nose
Green apple, mango, lime, vanilla, almond, peach, pineapple, rhubarb and honey. Mainly fresh & fruity, but also a Springbank-y oiliness with peat ash underneath.
    • Taste
Mango, green apple, lime, ginger, peat, oil, pepper, vanilla, fig, pepper and a little beeswax.
    • Finish
Almond, peat ash, mango, pepper, vanilla and honey.

    • Nose
Fruity with notes of apples, pears and rich briny peat smoke, alongside sticking
      plasters and barley malt.
    • Taste
      Spicy
and rich with notes of cedar, ginger, sweet pipe tobacco and malt, with more
than a hint of oily, medicinal smoke.
    • Finish
      Good
length with tart citrus, pepper and pine resin

This is not bad for a 7 Year Old. In five years time, this could be a
winner. By the way, the name Kilkerran was chosen because the name Glengyle was
already trademarked by Loch Lomond (they sold
this at one point as a blend). Kilkerran is derived from the original name of
the settlement where the distillery can be found today.
    • Nose

The nose is young with loads of malt, but also quite some apples and
pears. Quite some brine and hints of peat. Pine cones! Light
      peppers.
    • Taste

It is nicely creamy on the palate. The white fruit seems to be served from a cardboard box, if you know
what I mean. The pepper is louder, now. Ginger kicks in. Towards the end, a good dollop of vanilla and more peat than on the nose
emerge. Yes, becomes spicier all the time. A twig of mint.
    • Finish

The finish is fairly long on pepper and something that reminds me of
      varnish.

It can hardly be immature. It's by no means a bad one either. Only 7 years old, this youngster has a decent potential. There's also plenty of space for manoeuvres to conduct. However it is a solid, proper high-Q and self-sufficing product already. Let's give those men who gave it birth a credit, they've done work worthy to be praised indeed.
    • Nose
Gentle, delicate sweetness. Cut apple, cider/lemonade, greenery, freshness, grassy motifs, almonds, lokum, jelly sweets. Presently pear develops in aroma, fruit drops and duchesse beverage.
    • Taste
Soft, clean, placid even. Clayey, pulverulent (powder-like), dry soil, chalk, reasonable saltness, citrus fruit, a trace of honey. Lacking somewhat in oiliness, the body has a medium texture after all. And good balance by the way.
    • Finish
Medium long, sweet, reasonably warming - not near burning. Newly baked crescents, cinnamon, cardamom, anise seeds, nutty note, chocolate vanilla ice cream, touch of oak barrel, barley sugar.

There seem to be at least 2 batches of this (at least).
The bottle code on mine is 11/314. Assuming 314 is the day of the year, this was bottled a few months after the 11/219 stated above.
Does anyone know if these 2, despite the ~100 days difference in the bottling date, are from the same vatting ?

The three Kilkerran Work in Progress releases have no distillation/bottling dates or age statements. Here`s how to tell the difference:

White label and tube: 5yo WIP 1 2009

Grey label and tube: 6yo WIP 2 2010

Green label and tube: 7yo WIP 3 2011

  23. aprager scored this whisky 87 points Expert Junior

Amazing complexity at this age. Bodes well for future releases. Grab one if you can. Only 15,000 bottles per year at the moment
    • Nose
Apples, honey and clover. With water some spices and pear. Quite fruity.
    • Taste
Ginger, some smoke (open fire), and sweet honey. With water quite buttery and savoury
    • Finish
Long and nice with some peppery notes
