This whisky was aged for 18 years in American oak casks, then an additional 10 years in Chateau d’Yquem Sauternes barriques. The nose is very complex with coconut, pears, vanilla, and toasted oak. The taste has a clove spiciness, along with nutmeg, coconut, pineapple, and hazelnut notes. The finish is rich, spicy, and very long with touches of lemon, vanilla, and mint. Water adds more complexity with touches of roasted almonds and chestnuts.

    Tasting Notes and Comments by Glenmorangie;

Aroma: Captivating and heady with the combination of poached pears, baked pineapple sponge, demerara sugar, nutmeg and aniseed.

Taste: The layers of delicious desserts are joined by honeydew melon and lemon vanilla madeleines with oak tannins bringing hints of French toast.

Finish: Long, succulent and sweet with sultanas, toasted almonds and the lingering memory of lemon and coconut desserts.A single malt whisky beyond comparison, Glenmorangie Pride 1981 is the culmination of 28 years of passion, patience and artistry. As its name implies, the birth date was 1981 – in the month of October - when the original liquid was distilled and laid down for maturation in Glenmorangie’s finest oak casks. The intention had always been to create an exquisite vintage 18-Year-Old, yet in 1999, Dr Bill Lumsden acquired the key to crafting an even more outstanding whisky: a limited quantity of Sauternes barriques from the fabled vineyards of Chateau d’Yquem. Thus the whisky was extra-matured for 10 more years in those prized casks - the longest period any Glenmorangie whisky has ever undergone extra-maturation.

    TASTING NOTES
    COLOR: Intense, deepest gold

AROMA: Apple tart with sprinklings of demerara sugar, nutmeg and aniseed are underpinned by musky oak tones. The addition of water releases a myriad of exotic fruits and spices

TASTE: Intense layers of delicious desserts: syrup sponge pudding covered in milk chocolate sauce, honeydew melon and lemon vanilla burst on the palate. A strong backbone of oak tannins is present, bringing hints of French toast and steely mineral notes

FINISH: Long, succulent and sweet with sultanas, toasted almonds and the lingering memory of lemon and coconut desserts

Tasting notes from Whisky Advocate by Gavin D. SmithGlenmorangie
Pride employs the use of Sauternes barriques to give a 10 year period
of secondary maturation to a batch of spirit distilled in 1981. The
result is a whisky with an intense, pungent, earthy nose; very complex,
with polished old furniture notes, spices, oak tannins, and licorice.
The palate is "full on" for a Glenmorangie; waxy, with sherbet, honey,
and baked apple, then orange marmalade, sultana, and a hint of smoke in
    the lengthy finish.

Glenmorangie Pride 1981 whisky is the culmination of 28 years of
passion, patience and artistry. At its heart is the remarkable
Glenmorangie 1981 Vintage, which was aged for 18 years in first-fill
ex-bourbon barrels. The whisky was then extra-matured exclusively in
Chateau d’Yquem Sauternes casks for an additional 10 years before being
bottled at 56.7% ABV. The whisky is presented in a striking Baccarat
    crystal decanter and wooden case.

  6. Feusi did not rate this whisky Connoisseur

A very special edition Glenmorangie and one of the oldest whiskies they have on the market. Finished in Sauternes casks from Chateau d`Yquem, master distiller Dr Bill Lumsden describes the whisky as a `pinnacle` of their boundary pushing efforts. Its ornate wooden box, which lowers the round bottomed decanter as it opens, has caused some discussion in the whisky community, but the quality of the liquid seems to hold up to scrutiny. TWE
