    Gooseberry & Litchi

I confess, Mannochmore is a distillery that appears rarely on my radar. In the two decades that I’m sipping whisky, this is only my 5th encounter with this Speysider. That surprises even me. Today one that spent almost three decades in the cask and was released almost a decade ago by the former owners of the Bladnoch distillery. Despite the long maturation, it is very pale. Must be refill.

Very enticing nose on lots of herbal notes (flowers and hay), joined by crushed banana, strawberry jam, gooseberry and litchi, sniffing tobacco, pencil shavings, fresh tea leaves and cola candy. Hint of ice-cream. Ginger and liquorice. Fun!

Very spicy with a good body. Oily. Apples melon, citrus, litchi and some other European fruit, but also vanilla, ginger, liquorice and some nutmeg. Hint of overdone tea and even a grain of salt. Midpalate it turns somewhat dry with subtle oak. The alcohol is well-integrated, so the malt does not bite but does have some punch.

The finish remains feisty on pepper and is fairly long, but at the end it leaves the mouth completely dry.

Very good Mannochmore, but unfortunately nowhere to be found nowadays.
