Yes, I can't complain about that. The Kilkerran is not cheap as "only" 8yo, but delivers.
    • Nose
      87 87
Surprising intensity from the young bourbon cask. Ripe apples, kiwi, a bit grassy, vanilla, cookie dough, herbs, lime zest. A hard-to-describe funk, is that an easy peat? Complex. Alcohol really well integrated.
    • Taste
      86 86
Pleasant start for >55%. Citrus, light fruits, pleasant sweetness, now more easily recognizable peat, but very subtle.
    • Finish
      85 85
The peat smoke gives a slight dryness that wears off quickly but adds further complexity. Otherwise the concert of aromas remains as on the palate. Decent intensity and length. And that at only 8yo

Marinated olives, hay, brown sugar, green fruits, flowers, earthy peat, hint of cooking oil, light orchard fruits, forest floor, salt, something damp. Oily texture. Water reveals more fruits and a hint of medicine cabinet. Rather delicious.

Tried in the Pot Still in Glasgow, March 2023. Tried alongside the sherry 8-yo. Both different and have merit. On balance probably prefer this one but would love to try a marriage of the two - bring out the character of the distillery a bit more in the sherry. Fruitier on the nose than the sherry, as expected, and much more complex with water. An excellent dram.

Distillate shines through this whisky, which offers a more harmonic expression comparing to the Sherry cask pal.
    • Nose
      87 87
Citrusy, with lemon zest, and orange on the first nose, meanwhile showing the minerality and dustiness. Boiled pear and caramel added sweetness to the nose. Then evident sooty smokiness with kippers, iodine, and being lightly medicinal. I shall mention that it is also very young, with yeasty and fermented mash rather clearly presented, along with sandalwood. With time given: milk chocolate, sweet crackers. Bears water very well, with dried flowers, wax, bubblegum, and hawthorn unleashed after water addition.
    • Taste
      86 86
Mildly sweet but oily and rich-bodied arrival. Lightly peppery, with pear and lemon zest adding the sweet-sour mouthfeel. Savoury brines, along with a bonfire and burnt wood add to the smoky parts. With water: more floral, fruity, and sweetness, also showing a sharper zestiness. But the medicinal bitterness would put me off a bit.
    • Finish
      87 87
Long and round finish. Lemony, zesty with the bitterness persist. Solid maltiness of cereal and fermented mash, along with burnt wood. Nutmeg, chocolate and butters rounds the finish.

As a Kilkerran fanboy I'm probably slightly prejudiced but I'm very happy the full bourbon cask maturation is back in this 8yo CS series.

I get a whiff of smoke and then it opens up with honey, vanilla, light caramel, butterscotch, herbs, spices (green cardamom), green unripe pear, citrusy. A very warm mouthfeel, fatty and full. Lingers with a good medium long finish. No hard arrival even though it's north of 55%.

Vanilla (white candy), a bit of citrus, candied milk, a bit of smoke, Milka chocolate with salted TUC crackers - perfectly reflects it.
    The start is quite sweet.
But not very sympathetic at first reception.
Conquers a little dry manure: D at times.

    The taste is another barrel.
The whisky profile itself is great.
Slightly oily, with a nice abv.
    Highly drinkable.
At the beginning, the mucosa must assimilate the percentage abv.
Then, when we are "warmed up", the base notes of hazelburn 10 appear, but slightly "turned up"
They fill the whole mouth. There is noticeable honey, there is wax, a bit of fresh grass, citruses, salty/marine climates appear at the end.

Finish is the weakest point here.
Medium, quite short, sweet notes pass quickly enough to give way to a wooden note

Tastes younger than some previous 8 year old bourbon cask matured versions (the 2017 and 2018 bottlings), with more citrus, maritime and smoky mescal notes in this 2022 bottling, and a bit less rounded and rich on the finish. Still high quality spirit, just a little younger and rougher in profile.
