The cask infused greater complexity to the distillate and overshadowed the smokiness. Nonetheless, the cask influence was not a harmonic one.

Briny, and just mildly sooty, then typical shortcomings of fresh Sherry casks used for a short period of aging: burnt matches, rubber tubes, sultanas, burnt sugar. Underneath these notes, there were pear along with apple marmalade. With time given the chocolate but also the tart fruits came out very well. Yeasty and farmy. With water added I am afraid that the rubber and gunpowder became more evident.

A clear sweetness at the arrival with a suprisingly more delicate texture, while the sherry cask definitely led to a multi-dimensional palate presenting nuttiness (macadamia chocolate), saltiness (brine), and sourness (tart fruit, cranberries). The sooty smoke was less pronounced here compared to the Bourbon cask version. With water came more gunpowder and sour-bitter cocoa.
    • Finish
      86 86
Round and medium-lengthed. Choclatly and spirity, along with some dried fruit and gunpowders, but less medicinal bitterness and charred-wood smokiness. Solidly malty, with a trace of black tea as a finish.

Old books, dunnage, damp earth, fresh vegetables, lick of gunpowder, touch of peat, marinated olives, rich tobacco, dark malt, chocolate, spices, roasted nuts. Dark fruits are unearthed with water. Time in the glass recommended. Excellent!

Tried in the Pot Still in Glasgow, March 2023. Thought this was very good. A bit (lot?) of a Sherry bomb but still plenty going on to enjoy. Sweet Sherry and marzipan on the nose. Very spicy on the palette but still enjoyable. Fruitier with water and a little easier to drink. Overall impressed. Might be better with a portion of its time in something other than Sherry but for a relatively young dram this was great.

Fresh in the glass the nose is full of the more sulphury sherry notes and also reeks of glue. After leaving the dram to stand for 15 minutes it opens up and dried fruits and tobacco shine through, also a little bit of smoke enters the nose.

Nice sweet on the sherry with dried dades, raisins, sultana's tobacco. Warm, white pepper, oily mouthfeel. Finish lasts long.

That being said I completely miss the distillery profile here. It's bourbon brother has way more distillery influence, the influence I love to bits. Although this is good stuff, Glengyle is too much amiss for my liking.

Extinguished match, slight musty smoke, vegetable soup, cheddar, malt, hints of citrus and green apples, slightly burnt toast
    • Taste
      88 88
There are obvious notes of sherry, plums in chocolate, quite sweet, also light smoke, chili spice, some wood, malt, a bit of sulfur
    • Finish
      88 88
Medium, red fruit jam, some oak spice, sweet

Nose: Reminiscent of last year's Sherry Kilkerran with a smell of mushroom and asparagus soup, but less pronounced. After a while, sea buckthorn pastille comes. This makes the malt appear "more modern" than last year's version. A light note of sulfur still hovers over the whole thing - but maybe it's also charcoal powder. Definitely slightly smoky. The smoke is "musty" like some Longrow Red bottlings. Like putting out a campfire with water from a musty pond. After even more standing time, the goat meat mirabelle plum ragout comes out. (90 p.)

Palate: charcoal, plums, sea buckthorn. The Campbeltown radio is on the second line. Slightly spicy, but not alcoholic. Something simply knitted, but without mistakes. (88 p.)

Finish: charcoal, plums. Slightly acidic, but in a pleasantly fruity way. medium length (88 p.)

Conclusion: It's not bad. Last year's went in the same direction but was fuller and "greasier".
