One of the better standard bottlings of Irish pot still. Around 55 EUR (although I recently saw it in Germany for less than 40 EUR). It’s worth it.
    • Nose
The nose is very light and fruity on banana, apricots, pineapple and sultanas. Some melon. Loads of caramel and honey and even a whiff of diesel oil (not an off-note). Freshly sawn planks and some wood glue. Mint! Very fresh and nice.
    • Taste
The body is rather weak, but the taste is ok. Sultanas and rum raisins, apricots and oranges and even some kiwi. Add some allspice and a touch of oak for a slight bitterness. Good continuation of the nose. Far from complex, but very tasty.
    • Finish
The finish is surprisingly long. The fruit turns candied, while the spices linger.

Only since 2011 on the market, now a classic. Full and complex body, great earthy and fruity pot still notes. So he can not quite reach his contemporaries, the Red Breast 12 YO, though he is nominally 46% ahead of him in terms of alcohol strength. But still: A wonderful pot still whiskey.
    • Nose
Red ripe berries, leather, tobacco. Dark chocolate, bedded on earth. Malt. A wonderful pot still nose.
    • Taste
Full and creamy. Creamy honey, dark chocolate. Dried logs. The taste of a toffee candy. At the back comes strong malt notes with a shot of honey.
    • Finish
      Again, this great, long-lasting creaminess.

Aroma: open, slightly harsh, sherry-malt, red fortified wine, plum jam, baked pear, cherry pie, a lot of vanilla and pastry baking, spices, fresh ginger, cinnamon, cloves, pleasant dry wood. Very pleasant aroma combining sweet pastries and berry-wine component.

Taste: a lot of spices, red pepper, cloves, cumin, notes of bourbon, some varnish-woody tones, bitter rind, slightly wine and malt-bread, buttery.

Finish: medium length, oily, the same spices, cloves, cumin, pepper already very slightly, zest, a small herbal bitterness, dark chocolate.

    Rating: 84

The result: I liked the aroma most of all, the taste and finish are even, but simpler, the oiliness can be written in plus to this whiskey, it gives weight and texture to the taste and finish. Pleasant drinking 12, without any particular enthusiasm, of course, at the level of good basic Speiders 12-15 years. I try the style of Single Pot Still for the first time, I got the impression that this is a kind of mix in the taste of a single molt, bourbon, and rye whiskey, such a laconic woody and spicy

Excellent and moreish Irish single pot still whiskey from Powers.
    • Nose
Hints of wood shavings and glue, but quickly some soft fruits appear, like apricots and pineapple, and even some banana. Just a touch of citrus too. Also notes of creamy vanilla custard and cookie dough.
    • Taste
Creamy and oily with subtle spices. Brioche buns, orange zest, cough syrup and licorice. A bit of rum raisins as well. Very typical Irish pot still and very lovely.
    • Finish
Lingering spices, menthol, and soft fruits.

I am very fond of this dram as my mother purchased this for me in an attempt to open my eyes to the world of Irish whiskey. It worked! This is an amazing expression of triple distilled Irish excellence. Soft, strong, well rounded and a beautiful developing flavour.

A definite upgrade vis-à-vis the regular Powers ("Gold Label") and well worth the extra 10-15 bucks you need to shell out for it. This is in a different league and way more mature.
In character, highly reminiscent of Yellow Spot, Midleton's rival 12-year-old, albeit less fruity and slightly more affordable, and, I dare say: inferior. Though this is similarly cask-driven and focused on woody aromatics and pot still spiciness (it's almost rye-like in its emphasis on bitter spice), it's also less well-rounded and assured, with an alcoholic twinge that hasn't been fully integrated. It's still good stuff, don't get me wrong, and I'd have this over many other Irish whiskies any day of the week, but for me, this isn't a repeat purchase, whereas Yellow Spot most certainly is, even though it's more expensive (upwards of 50 €).
