  1. markjedi1 scored this whisky 85 points Connoisseur

One of the better standard bottlings of Irish pot still. Around 55 EUR (although I recently saw it in Germany for less than 40 EUR). It’s worth it.
    • Nose
The nose is very light and fruity on banana, apricots, pineapple and sultanas. Some melon. Loads of caramel and honey and even a whiff of diesel oil (not an off-note). Freshly sawn planks and some wood glue. Mint! Very fresh and nice.
    • Taste
The body is rather weak, but the taste is ok. Sultanas and rum raisins, apricots and oranges and even some kiwi. Add some allspice and a touch of oak for a slight bitterness. Good continuation of the nose. Far from complex, but very tasty.
    • Finish
The finish is surprisingly long. The fruit turns candied, while the spices linger.

  2. Archer scored this whisky 88 points Connoisseur

Only since 2011 on the market, now a classic.
Full and complex body, great earthy and fruity pot still notes.
So he can not quite reach his contemporaries, the Redbreast 12 YO, although he is nominally 46% ahead of him in terms of alcohol strength.
But still: A wonderful pot still whiskey.
    • Nose
      87 87
      Red ripe berries, leather, tobacco.
      Dark chocolate, bedded on earth.
      Malt.
      A wonderful pot still nose.
    • Taste
      88 88
      Full and creamy.
      Creamy honey, dark chocolate.
      Dried logs.
The taste of a toffee candy.
At the back come strong malt notes with a shot of honey.
    • Finish
      87 87
      Again, this great, long-lasting creaminess.

  3. Tom na Gruagaich scored this whisky 85 points Connoisseur

Very sweet, lots of pot still spiciness, subtle fruit, rather butterscotch sweetness. Very nice pot still, though not as deep as a redbreast.

  4. thijs100 scored this whisky 86 points Connoisseur

Excellent and moreish Irish single pot still whiskey from Powers.
    • Nose
Hints of wood shavings and glue, but quickly some soft fruits appear, like apricots and pineapple, and even some banana. Just a touch of citrus too. Also notes of creamy vanilla custard and cookie dough.
    • Taste
Creamy and oily with subtle spices. Brioche buns, orange zest, cough syrup and licorice. A bit of rum raisins as well. Very typical Irish pot still and very lovely.
    • Finish
Lingering spices, menthol, and soft fruits.

    Another gig, another blind challenge.

N: I find this so very punchy and resinous! Is this bourbon? Once I taste it, it’s clearly Irish whiskey and I’m right in guessing it’s around 10-12 years of age. So are we talking of a nicely aged malt that’s been flash-finished in virgin oak?
T: Clearly Irish [unmalted barley mash and floral tropical fruits], nicely aged with a rich creamy malty mouthfeel. Not too complex but TAST-EY!
F: Only slightly green on the turn but it’s balanced. Fair finish and form.

C: I found Powers 12 equally as good the last time I had it back in 2016. When in a bar, I consider this and Lagavulin 16 as go-to juice!

Grassy and flora, good arrival on the palate,
    • Nose
      86 86
Grassy and floral, with some milk chocolate, beehives and nice amount of wood.
    • Taste
      86 86
Good arrival, same kind of grassy and floral notes from the nose.
    • Finish
      85 85
Medium long finish, light and fresh.

  9. Albaron scored this whisky 85 points Specialist

Strong aromas, robust approach, quite pleasant and easy to drink, goes well with a Guinness, I can well imagine. Delicious and uncomplicated.
    • Nose
strong aromas, light alcohol, a little oily and solvent, some raisins, barrel seasoning, herbs, subliminally very sweet
    • Taste
strong onset, herbs, sweet, some orange jam, raisins, forest honey leads into the finish
    • Finish
The honey takes it back, the sweetness stays and it mixes with a mineral and metallic note and also a few tannins, which then stay quite long

A very good Irish pot still for the money. Neat spice. Compared to the Redbreast 15yo spicy, but also less substantial.
