A few drops of water and time will open up the peat and the Springbank funkiness. A saltier version of the recent years local barley releases I’d say.

Quaffable, but not crazy secondary market ££££ good.

    81-85 - Another dram welcomed.

Brine. Salted caramel. Wet wood in tropical forest. A whiff of cooked pineapple and vanilla. Sweet.
    • Taste
      86 86
The main theme is still salty and sweet. A lot more vanilla and honey here. Fiery pepper and oak spices. Smouldered coastal bonfire. A touch of mixed summer fruit basket.
    • Finish
      85 85
Mid finish. Soft peat lingering with a touch of star fruits and vanilla oak.

75 points, why? Yes why not? Still a solid 3 on school grades. But nothing more.
Let's face it, this whisky is only so expensive as supply cannot meet demand. But please, over 300€?! Guys, the RRP in Germany was €129, hardly any dealer offered it at this price. A pity.
A Local Barely is something different. He doesn't really appeal to me. I'd rather stay with the OA's 10y or 15y.
However, taste is subjective and everyone should decide for themselves whether to spend €300 on an average 11y whisky.
Definitely not me, therefore only 75 points.

I'm glad I once again opened an LB and that it was this one. It reminds me a bit of 15yr rum from a few years back. It's still a favorite of mine, so it's no surprise that this one is also high on my list.

Its time for Local Barley 11yo 2022 release. First local barley with some rum component (10% rum, 55% sherry, 35% bourbon). The quality sits here without questions. For me, Local Barley series is quintessence of Springbank DNA, the nose literally takes you back to the distilery. Comparing to 2021 release I would say (from the memory) this one has more minerality notes and its a bit sweeter. After adding a few drops of water, i found some old dusty book but at the same time its getting more sweeter. Lovely dram.

Quite interesting profile - not bad but won't become my favorite LB
    • Nose
      89 89
Malty, wet hay, honeydew, stones, minerals, quince, cookie dough, little yeasty, vanilla, toffee, white grapes, sultanas, whiff of iodine, brine, seabreeze, little kippery - quite interesting
    • Taste
      88 88
Oily, little punchy, vanilla, wet hay, little honey, subtle sweetness, stones, minerals, little waxy, cookie dough, little citric, lemon peel, more yeasty, yellow fruits, pepper, ginger, oak wood - not bad
    • Finish
      87 87
Medium long, warm, citric, spicy, hay, hint of tobacco, vanilla, little kippery

First tasted this in Campbeltown, just a few weeks before it came out. It was a nice fruity dram upon first impression, seemed to be lacking some complexity, but it was hardly a good environment to get a thorough impression. Tasting this a few weeks later, I must say I am more impressed with the end product. It has all the tasty highlights of the regular 10, but these rum casks make for a fruity sensation. Bottling this output at cask strength adds a lot more layers top, as compared to the regular 10, which is the powerhouse against which all Springbank should be measured. This LB is truly recommendable!

Hyperbole definition "exaggerated statements or claims not meant to be taken literally." Hype definition "promotion, especially promotion consisting of exaggerated claims."
Springbank do not promote their whisky using exaggerated claims; so their whisky does not have any hype to live up to.
Admittedly with an RRP of £100 for 11yo cask strength this is becoming a little expensive. The answer is quite simple - do not pay over RRP for this and/or buy the 10yo which is starting to stick to the shelves a bit more (and yes at over £50 is also looking a little expensive; but not hyped!)

I'm not a fanboy, but curious, so thanks to @DocF. for the dram, one is enough for me, I don't need a bottle for the course
    • Nose
      88 88
Tropical candied fruit, very clean light wood notes, some mineral dust - initially very tasty and intense - but somehow the nose doesn't hold its class for so long and flattens out a bit and becomes less complex and intense
    • Taste
      89 89
excellent explosive sweet fruity spicy composition - candied pineapple, ginger, citrus, light wood, pepper and delicious cowshed muff - chewable for a very long time and perfectly drinkable without water
    • Finish
      82 82
first delicious Springbank style - then it becomes a bit herbaceous - herbal - medium neutral-bitter impact, which the pleasant aromas mask quite well - unfortunately only bitter remains after a minute (possibly daily form)

This is a hype. It is not worth more than 150 euros.

  19. dercaptain scored this whisky 86 points Expert Senior

I agree with LeChiffre. It doesn't even come close to living up to the hype. It does nothing wrong and has quite nice moments. Candied pineapple, vanilla sugar, nice maritime (salty sea air), a bit dirty (Springbank Funk). And it stays in the mouth for a long time, especially the saltiness

  20. LeChiffre scored this whisky 86 points Connoisseur

No, I'm sorry, I can't understand the recurring hype about this bottling series.
It's quite tasty in itself and doesn't do anything wrong, but seriously: this is a malt in the price range of around 70-100 euros and would already be well paid for! If you can get it for well over 100 euros RRP (I'm not even talking about the sometimes ridiculous retail prices), it's simply overpriced and a joke.
I can only recommend to broaden your view of Campbeltown a bit, because you can get stuff that is just as good there much cheaper away from Springbank.

Sweetness of the spirit is quite intense.

But in the finish, It has a dry metallic / earthy feeling.

  24. OJK scored this whisky 87 points Expert Senior

There’s an appealing tropical candied sweetness layered over the saline earthy Springbank distillate, however it doesn’t quite all fuse together - perhaps too young or perhaps overly aggressive casks. The nose is nicely complex and the palate has good density, but on the finish it becomes unbalanced and the wood spices come to the fore. Good individual components that don’t quite add up, but an interesting and distinct dram nonetheless.

There are also a lot of yellow fruits, pears, plums, apricots, vanilla, oak spice, a bit of chili, salted caramel

Medium, quite spicy, chili, firewood, caramel, vanilla

  26. scotty2202 scored this whisky 84 points Expert Junior

Very young but well balanced Springbank for which I would pay up to 75 €.

  27. Vallado scored this whisky 87 points Expert Senior

Delicious drinking whisky like all Local Barleys; Sherry doesn't come through, but the influence of the rum cask is clearly noticeable despite only 10% (I think it's good, Springbank + rum fits). Significantly salty note, especially on the palate.

  28. Jack McClane scored this whisky 89 points Connoisseur

    • Nose
      90 90
On the nose ripe bananas, pears, engine oil, leather, salty mineral notes, a briny harbour basin with a hint of cold ash.
    • Taste
      88 88
On the palate classic Springbank dirtback, no sulphur so, stonefruits such as apricots and yellow plums, salted caramel chocolate, an Oldtimer garage and pimientos de padron with smoky salt.
    • Finish
      89 89
The finish lingers with a fine melanche of chili honey, oysters, rosemary, soft peat and burned Bavarian creme - everything right at its place.
