This really is characterful malt with value for money, especially if you buy a litre bottle!
    • Nose
      87 87
Beautifully layered nose. It has the sweetness of dulce de leche, caramel and a bit of honey, but also a savoury edge of blue cheese, hay and fruitiness: pears, red grapes and dried apricot.
    • Taste
      86 86
Heavy and buttery mouth feel. Vanilla fudge and salted caramel followed by citrus fruits and a certain earthiness (mushrooms? soy sauce?). It's quite spicy, with cloves, white pepper and ginger. At times, it's a bit mineral with a whiff of smoke.
    • Finish
      85 85
The blue cheese and the spices return, but the sweetness is gone. It's a bit bitter and dry, and rather briny with a touch of wet wood, leather and a trace of smoke.

I friend of mine gave me the tip (and a sample) to try this overlooked whisky. I know the 15yo sherry cask is a very nice dram but I never payed attention to it’s younger brother.
    • Nose
A basic highlander but on steroids! This is quite a nose full. Tangerines, banana and canned peaches. Coconut powder, kardemom and old books. Powerful nose for a 12yo OB expression. On of thee better out there!
    • Taste
Oily and smooth. Tangerines again but also pineapple and again banana, green banana’s. Later on some peppers, ginger powder and dried oak.
    • Finish
The Medium Finish gives me canned peach, oranges, vanilla and some cream butter cookies. It does go quite a bit tart at the end, a bit to much for my palate. That really is a bit pitty.

A really nice balanced nose for a 12y. A round thing. The sherry influence is nice to find here. The combination of pepper, spices and fruit is also beautifully combined in the mouth.

A really beautiful blossom honey color that the Glen Garioch conjures up here in the glass. At the beginning a very delicate floral and spicy smell that reminds me slightly of the nose from Highland Park 12y. Since both malts are often referred to as heather, this could be what I smell here. Behind this is a subtle orange, linked to a ripe pear. With 48% alcohol, the malt is quite well stocked for a standard. Although the nose is consistently very round and balanced, one notices the alcohol again and again. With water the orange comes out more and at the beginning the heather (?).
    • Taste

Very nice creamy mouthfeel. In the beginning there is a malty sweetness. Then comes orange pepper chutney with a nice mix of spices, cinnamon is definitely included. Nutmeg is also present in the mixture, but only a touch. With the addition of water, on the one hand, the pepperiness is reduced, but the spice bag picks up more speed.
    • Finish
      85 85
Peppery but also fruity finish. Quite, so really at the very end, the whisky becomes a little more oak-heavy and thus a little drier and bitter. But not too much. A nice counterpoint to the initial sweetness.

    A great standard. Super PGV.
    • Nose
Fruity and herbaceous opening. Butterscotch, ripe apricot, clove and leather. A very appealing profile. Oak is spuerbar, but at the same time floral and pleasantly sweet. The alcohol cools the nose and provides a strong note that does not bother. In the background forest floor and earthiness.
    • Taste
Creamy-pleasant, initially slightly peppery-earthy, then again sweet and floral with apricot, orange, syrup. At the same time herbs and oak, leather and carnation.
    • Finish
Long and slightly dry, oak, dark chocolate, honey and fruit.

    - a classically good highland single malt
    - You can drink the 48% straight without any problems
    - very intense in taste and great aroma
    - one of the best 12 year old standard bottlings up to 40 €!
    • Nose
      Sherry, oak, light floral notes
    • Taste
Crème brûlée followed by oak wood, sweetness from caramel or toffee
    • Finish
      medium-long, soft finish;
long, dry aftertaste that stimulates saliva flow, oak notes linger

The sherry influence tends to vary from batch to batch. My first bottle was noticeably more bourbon-based, while the 1-liter-travel-retail bottling I have going right now is pretty "dark" in character.
    • Nose
      86 86
Acidic / tart / mineralic in character. Lime zest, sour fruit gums, hay, chalk, gravel, wet pebbles. An austere style that may scare off the uninitiated. Well sherried, a lot of cask influence, pretty spicy. Pretty complex for a 12-year-old OB.
    • Taste
      87 87
Intense, the strength works wonders at 48%. Great mix of tart fruit notes (lime, redcurrant), floral impressions (elderberry, lilac), and minerality.
    • Finish
      84 84
Still on the tart/sour side. A bit uneventful, with oak galore.

One of the best standard 12-year old bottlings on the market at this point in time. Fruity and waxy nose, combined with a full-bodied and slightly sweet taste. Highly recommended bang for your bucks bottle!

  10. thijs100 scored this whisky 81 points Connoisseur

Good start, with plenty of fruit on the nose, too bad the palate is a bit more one-dimensional. Still, a very decent entry-level malt, this is.
    • Nose
Slightly farm-y with some nice graininess, accompanied by dried grass and tobacco. It has a touch of pickled lemon peel, as well as some softer orange notes, before progressing nicely into notes of apricots and peaches, and caramel.
    • Taste
Full-bodied and somewhat spicy, with roasted peanuts. Some tobacco and leather, and it is a tad malty too. Finally some bitter oak and vanilla.
    • Finish
After a little while it becomes a bit sweeter. Medium in length.
