Glen Garioch 1994/2011 (53.9%, OB, batch No 32, North American oak barrels)
It’s quite ‘funny’ that Glen Garioch has been following Bowmore’s path,
glorious 1960s, excellent early to mid 1970s, then a drop (sometimes
abysmal), and then some great spirit again from around 1990 on. Let’s
check this new baby… Colour: white wine. Nose: starts quite hot, a tad
spirity and all on fresh garden fruit, mainly pears and apples as well
as greengages. Also a little pineapple drop and then more wet rocks or
gravel, with an obvious flinty side, and lastly, more vegetal notes
(fern, grass, earth, humus) and vanilla. With water: gets farmier, more
on grains, barnyard, leaven and then peat… We’re close to the barley
here, and that’s very nice in this context. Nice nose. Mouth (neat):
much in line with the nose, pear drops, liquorice, cough drops, berries…
(cranberries). Pleasant bitterness (strong green tea, peat). With
water: becomes more compact, nicely so, with rather more oranges and
touches of cloves. It’s a big, full-bodied dram. Finish: medium long,
maybe even a tad short despite the mint, the liquorice and the pepper
that are in the aftertaste. Comments: quite perfect youngish Glen
Garioch, fresh, full and moderately peaty. We’re probably not back to
the fab level of the 1960s and early 1970s yet but that may be coming… SGP:453 - 85 points.

He hangs on the glass wall. The mouthfeel is oily too. Very well balanced, sweet and tart notes are in good harmony. A grateful malt. He likes me better than water.
    • Nose
A lot of caramel, a flowery overtone, some malt. Over time comes a light citrus scent, lime, maybe some grapefruit. Peach notes, a little pear. The caramel disappears, the flower meadow remains, the citrus notes are getting stronger. When warming strong zest, some caramel in the background. At the end again a lot of malt and caramel. The alcohol stays behind at any time. A dash of vanilla with some water and actually some ham before the flavors equalize again.
    • Taste
Decent onset, lots of caramel, but rather dry, citrusy, very astringent. Much sweeter with water, hardly any zest, a bit flatter, but still good.
    • Finish
Medium long, sweet, pleasant, pleasant, but also dry. Still astringent. Remains slightly nutty in the mouth at the end.

1484) Glen Garioch, 1994/2011, North American Oak Barrels, Small Batch No. 32
    • Nose
N- While the 1991 breath its way up over the years, this 1994 that distilled a year before being mothballed doesn't seem to benefit with about the same time spent in the bottle. Still bright and citrus-y with spicy oak hitting the nose, green-y and leaf-y with maltose and barley sugar. Strawberry milk with nuttiness, as well drift of mints and crushed peppers. At time, soft with wee much oak prevail and feel rather on a decline compared to 5 years ago. (86/20)
    • Taste
P- While few notches down on aroma, still broad on palate. Vanilla and honey with juicy sweet oak, wheat-ish, spicy sweet with underlying polished dryness that highly savourable. Evolving well and get creamier eventually with fragrant oak pulsing softly. (88/22)
    • Finish
F- Long, flowery, juicy oak and warming spices. Waxy, crisp. Cracked peppers and raisinets. (87/21)

Fine and subtly vinous with milk chocolate, it then gives the nose an impression of green cereals. (What seems typical of a sherry cask while it is American oak! Do I have a cold?) On the palate, powerful, very spicy (clove). Alcohol dominates too much. Even with water, he remains aggressive. Anytime wood has woken, whether it is on the nose or in the finish that is bitter. Enthusiasm 2/5

I have reviewed this whisky as part of a full Glen Garioch Vintage series at, with the 1995 and 1991, all bourbon matured, and very different....: http://maltandoak.com/glen-garioch-vintage-series-review-part-ii-vintage-1995-vintage-1994-and-vintage-1991/

Blind tasting. Tastes like a lot other Speyside/Highland whiskies.
    • Nose
Fruity - creamy fruits - melon, mandarins and apple.
    • Taste
Honey, nutmeg and fruity - peach. Lots of bourbon cask influence - bourbon fruits but not really unique.
    • Finish
      Drying and malty.
