It's surprisingly peaty and smoky despite the 21 years, but it is well harmonized with the disillery character. 86/87.

Campfires and BBQ. Not an overly complex whisky but won't disappoint.
    • Nose
      90 90
Autumn, sitting by the fire in your holiday cottage deep in the woods. Aromas of burning wood, the fire and embers. Now it resembles BBQ, thinking of honey-glazed baby back ribs. With time it picks up green notes, it has a grassy note, and begins to gain some green apple peel.
    • Taste
      90 90
Sweet on the arrival but immediately followed up by ash, it's burnt wood and embers. Big mouthfeel, sweet honey and orchard notes.
    • Finish
      88 88
Notes of wood, not as smoldering as the nose or palate. Soft ash notes, a lot shorter than expected. Finish also packs a punch with a blast of oak spice.

BenRiach 21YO is a very interesting whisky which needed in time to be open. At the first blush this whisky seems like simple, and it’s hard to believe, that this is 21YO whisky. But if you give time it could be opened in its entirety. The nose starts with notes of green halm of wormwood, mint and tomato with chemical notes of acetone. But after time the nose moves to sweet notes of yellow fruits, sweet fruits, with leather, peated smoke and black pepper. And nose drifts from peated and spicy to sweet fruity notes during tasting. The palate is sweet, peaty and spicy with notes of yellow plums, grass, oak and dust. The finish is long, spicy and dusty with peat and oak notes. This is a very unique and tasty whisky.

Dry, herbs, peat reak, woody, various honeys, caramelized bacon quite dry and austere with bittersweet herbs... so my style of whisky.love it

Well a friend of mine said it is his favorite dram and it as an outstanding price/money value. I love that there are different opinions out there and different tastes as well. So far I am not in love with this distillery yet but I respect the opinion of others marking this dram as a very good option. For me personally it is boring, way too expensive and not worth another try.
    • Nose
apple, citrus and peat. Quite balanced in the nose.
    • Taste
oak, caramel, less fruity - OK :-)
    • Finish
      oaky long super unspectacular

Nose: Peat, fruit, and vanilla are immediately apparent. Apricot. Peach. Plum. Cocoa powder. Dried fruits. Caramel. Oak. As if there is a well-aged bourbon hiding behind peat smoke and stone fruits. Very nice.

Palate: Earthy peat. Vanilla. Blackberries. Stone fruits. Raisin. Chocolate. Cigar leaf. On the backend, some cinnamon and spice. There is the hint of a meaty/savory note similar to what I’ve found in some other Speysides, such as Mortlach and Craigellachie. This savory element comes out more in the backend as it develops. Mouthfeel is thick and heavy.

Finish: Fairly dry. White wine. Cinnamon. Dried fruits. Raisins. Hint of dark chocolate. Oak.

Overall: Interesting and delicious. The nose and palate are very good and quite complex; the finish is nothing special, although not bad.

I’m surprised by how much peat smoke is present, considering the age. Peat often diminishes with age, but there is still quite a bit to be found in this one, even if it is a bit mellowed. The peat is a little different than your typical Islay peat, as there are no maritime or medicinal notes. It’s more of an earthy and mellow peat.

In spite of the stronger than expected peat presence, the age of this whisky is apparent. Plenty of oak and quite the diversity of flavors.

Buy again? Maybe. Probably not. This is good, but other whiskies of similar quality can be found for less money.

    N-
Probably most heavily peated whisky from the Speyside. Thick, milky
smokes with vanilla and toffee. Underlay savoury smoked salty meats.

P- Black pepper and spices. Herbal smokes with waves of phenolic and tobacco. A wee bit light on texture.

F- Long, velvet smooth, woody and spicy mouth-feel.

Nice nose: peat, toasted oak, orange, honey, almond. Malt attack and oak well dosed then smoked and peaty medium. Long finish on peat and pepper. Well, the alcohol is perfectly integrated, very little dilute it.

    Good Stuff!
    • Nose
The peat of this is not too heavy. It is a more sweet and aromatic peat, but it has also the medical touch. You can also detect some notes from the european oak and some spices like anis. Later some notes of caramel.  You need some time...
    • Taste
Heavy Peat! Pretty tingly on the tounge. Quite difficult to define all this stuff. I find some anis and some exotic fruits like pineapples. With some good will you can also find hints of sweet chocolates.
    • Finish
Very long and warming with nice notes of the spices in the end.

    • Taste
Rich flavor of peat and sweet honey accompanied by milk chocolate, raisins and oak with hints of spices
    • Finish
      Pure and gentle aftertaste

There are several batches available. According to MM, they are also different in tasting.  It seems that the later bottlings are better. Can anybody else confirm that?
This whisky as been bottled at least in the years 2005, 2007, 2009 and 2010, according to the batch numbers I know.

    • Nose
Naked fruity scent, peat in iodine Laphroaig style, or at least I feel like it. Sweet with pepper, it is a very nice mixture with a ground ember (fruit pulp).
    • Taste
I like the Laphroaig (cask strength) again, of course, with only a part of it, this time the peat handles the iodine and the palatability. Dozvuk long, smoked.
