Whisky Reviews for Lagavulin 16-year-old
10 users have left a review for this whisky and scored it an average of 87.98 points
Peat, some smoke, but not of a campfire, more like a barbecue.
There are some herbal, earthy qualities, but wood, specifically oak, and malt come through much more, and that is less than the peat. The sherry flavor plays nicely with it. It has some heat, but an overall creamy feel to it.
Middling finish, the malt is stronger here.
- Oh my how my taste has changed (my notes/score from 2013); redone in 2018 with a bottle from 2017, the same whisky received an 89. Cheers!
- Nose: Intense peat smoke. A slight woody/nuttiness in the background. Salt air.
Palate: Extremely smooth, with more peat smoke and iodine. Oak wood underneath.
Finish: Smoky cinders, with more wood. A small bit of salt water. No burn whatsoever.
Comments: Extraordinarily smooth and smoky. I could taste the high level of quality of this malt. The 16 year aging does everything for this whisky. It smooths it out to the point of making the alcohol burn nonexistent. It is a peat smoke delight!
- "A much sought-after single malt with the massive peat-smoke that`s typical of southern Islay - but also offering a dryness that turns it into a truly interesting dram. Deep amber gold. Intense nose of peat smoke with iodine and seaweed and a rich, deep sweetness. Full-bodied and rich. Dry peat smoke fills the palate with a gentle but strong sweetness, followed by sea and salt with touches of wood. A long, elegant peat-filled finish with lots of salt and seaweed." - Malts.com
- Brilliantly balanced Islay Malt. Deserves a permanent position on any good shelf. Wonderful. 90/100
Sweet, grassy turf on the nose, sweet smoke, saltiness, floral hints, spices, raisins.
Arrives light and sweet on the palate. Develops some spicy notes then a good dose of peat with some dry woody notes toward the end.
Medium, sweet and smokey finish with more spices and wood.
