[December 2022] Croftengea is the heavily peated version of the Loch Lomond malt...

...and this is another "no-bulls**t" dram without designed spikes or fancy flavours. If you love heavily peated drams, this might be a good and reasonably priced alternative to Island malts (provided you do not insist on maritime impressions).
    • Nose
      87 87
The colour is old gold, and the nose offers a powerful mainland-peated profile with sweet barley sugars and firm wooden notes. Nothing spectacular about it, and nothing wrong either. This is enjoyable to sniff before taking a sip, but not really interesting to investigate in further detail.
    • Taste
      88 88
The taste is a nice bitter-sweet combo of powerful (bitter) peat flavours and powerful (sweet) molten barley sugars in a firm wooden structure. It is nicely chewable, and there is no off-note or imbalance that I can find. It turns a little sweeter over time on caramel and milk chocolate impressions.
    • Finish
      87 87
The dram arrives warming and with a moderate coating effect on my palate without distracting moments. The finish is of medium length and adds no new impressions (neither good nor bad). Water turns both nose and taste smoother and releases some nutty impressions which I like. I prefer this dram at around 45% abv.

Please give this dram some time and air.
    • Nose
      88 88
Combination of gentle and mild peat-smoke and especially fruity flavors. Quite shy, even after 30-45 minutes untouched in the glass. After that improving by the minute which increases my score by 1 point.
    • Taste
      87 87
Powerful arrival of peaty flavors. Extremely warm mouth feel. The opposite of the nose: Peat-smoke > fruity notes.
    • Finish
      87 87
Long finish. Sticky peaty notes on the inner side of the mouth. Dry in the end.
