    The Ardbeg TEN - the classic of this Islay Distillery; timeless good! An intense, complex, good Islay malt;
    [Color] bright white wine;
    • Nose
      like phenolic cold smoke, vanilla, sweetness, light spiciness;
    • Taste
      strong onset, first sweet, then spicy (oak, ginger), mouth-filling; above all lies cold smoke, impetuous, complex;
    • Finish
      long, smoky, maritime finish; getting dry;

    this was where it all started for me, in 2013. This bottle is circa 2017.

    reassessment 09/20: actually just very good indeed, yes maybe lacks texture but it's so well matured? 7/10

    old comment: it's a bit thin, this really survives on being unchillfiltered I think, but dependable stuff, good value.
    • Nose
      at first quite a bright and youthful shape, carrying understated complexity. wee drop of water: underripe pear, 'earthy, mulchy, composting leaves' peat, porridge with vanilla pods, salted lemon butter, and lapsang souchong
    • Taste
      damp leaves on a bonfire, salted lemon and lime (in fact it's almost a bit tequila), marshmallows on twigs, roasted peanuts. the form is more like a 15 yo frankly, great maturity, and going on pretty long on dank woody smoke and some salt and vinegar in the end.

    [November, 2010]  I had this during a community tasting near Bonn.

    In my old rating system (ten scales that translate into WB points: 50 - 66 - 75 - 80 - 82,5 - 85 - 87,5 - 90 - 92,5 - 95) I scored it 87,5.  I took no further notes (I knew this stuff...)

    Great standard Ardbeg. Heavy, strong, peaty, smokey, but fresh.

    • Nose
      first slightly sweet notes, then strong smoke (phenolic) with citrus notes, Salmiakpastillen, sea spray
    • Taste
      short sweetness, which is quickly replaced by the strong, spicy onset, very salty, cereal notes, hay, the Salmiakpastillen from the Nosing also show up here discreetly
    • Finish
      long finish, warming. a slightly salty tingling on the palate remains, slight bitterness, the smoke sounds

    A whisky of reference.
    • Nose
      Lemon, smoke, peat, iodine, sea salt
    • Taste
      Sweet and spicy, medicinal, peat smoke, some citrus.
    • Finish
      Very long and peppery, maritime, ham, smoked, charcoal.

  9. checkpointuk scored this whisky 87 points Connoisseur Color: gold
    Nose: A sweet peat-tar-iodine combination with juicy citrus fruit, other medicinal phenols, spicy and salty, in the background still chocolate nuances.
    Taste: Salty, strong tar and peat notes, cold tobacco smoke, then lemon and vanilla
    Finish: very long, smoky and dry, strong peat, sweet malt, maritime flavors (salt water, seaweed)
    Review: A very successful and well-balanced single malt from Ardbeg. However, only conditionally recommended for the entry into the big, wide world of whiskys. 87 points

    • Nose
      Intense smoky, fruity aromas with a clear presence of barley, lemon, lime and dark chocolate which overflow into scents of smoked fish, crispy bacon with baked pineapple and pear juice. Complex but beautifully balanced!
    • Taste
      A taste explosion of barley and malt with lime and lemon in the lead role that complemented by including cinnamon, banana and blueberries. Subtle transition to a more warm and smoky taste of roasted marshmallows, licorice and tar. Truly a delight for the senses.
    • Finish
      Very long and smoky aftertaste of tar, anise, toasted almonds and hints of soft barley and toffee

    A real uppercut for the palate

    Not cheap, but you will have spent your money really well.

    As says whisky guru Michael Jackson "the Rocky Marciano" of scotch whisky.

    A real uppercut for the palate
    • Nose
      Citrus, smoke and seaside
    • Taste
      A bull with citrus, peat smoke, malt, salty, again a hint of lemon
    • Finish
      Long peated, malty and again smoke

  15. granella2003 scored this whisky 98 points Connoisseur

    • Nose
      At full strength, the aroma is a beguiling mix of toffee
      and chocolate sweetness, cinnamon spice and medicinal phenols. Fresh citrus and
      floral notes of white wine are evident, as are melon, pear drops and a gentle
      creaminess. There is also a fresh phenolic aroma of seaspray (iodine) and smoked
      fish. Hickory and coffee emerge later as the most volatile top notes
    • Taste
      The taste is initially a moderate and clean sweetness is rapidly
      followed by a mouthful of deep peat notes, with tobacco smoke and strong
      espresso coffee, which then gives way to treacle sweetness and liquorice. The
      mouthfeel is firstly lightly spiced, then chewing, mouth watering and full,
      finally drying.
    • Finish
      The finish is long and smoky. A smoky sweetness is left
      on the palate, with a crushed peat and sweet malted cereal character.

    Simply a great Dram!

    The Ardbeg 10 Years of the Isle of Islay is extremely dry, smoky and above all very peaty. The Ardbeg 10 is a fantastic Scottish whisky. Jim Murray has declared 10-year-old Ardbeg 2008 the "World Whisky of the Year". 97/100 pt. Jim Murray's Whisky Bible 2010
    nosing Smoky tea scent and a lot of fruit flavors, including apple and lemon, definitely a maritime influence of sea kelp and salt water Tasting a full peatiness and maritime flavors continued in the taste, also there is a hint of pepper and liquorice finish on its departure, the whisky leaves a lot of smoke and iodine on the palate, complemented by a dry sandiness and a peppery note balance a scotch overflowing with flavors, that kindles a taste firework, which fascinates above all by its multicolored variety and the great balance

  19. hsmithjr scored this whisky 87 points Connoisseur

    • Nose
      Serious smoke and tar.  Tire fires.  Salted fish.  Iodine.
    • Taste
      Medicinal and astringent.  Peat smoke.  Lemon tea.  Old ships rope.
    • Finish
      A kick in the mouth!  Long and smoky.  Not as whopping as a Laphroaig or Lagavulin, but it holds it's own.  Lemongrass.

    For peat-lovers, Ardbeg 10yo is probably the highest-quality

    `entry-level` single malt on the market, and the distillery many Islay

    connoisseurs would choose as their favourite. A whirlwind of peat and

    complex malty flavours, this is an exuberant, in-your-face whisky to be

    Nice Ardbeg, but not the expected "bomb"
    • Nose
      Fresh grassy sweetnes, a bit smoke and some iodine.
    • Taste
      Bitter sweetness, tar, salt and spices, i found no or really less peat, but a bit smoke (not as many as Arbeg usual).
    • Finish
      A rather long, grassy, slightly salty, with a little malt, notes of tobacco and some smoke in the finish.
