    Simply a wonderful malt!
    • Nose
      92 92
Delicately smoky, dried fruits, tobacco leaves, herbs but also sweet oranges and children's cough syrup.
    • Taste
      93 93
Even sweeter, even more oranges. But also something leathery-tart. Herbal notes and a note of casis and eucalyptus.
    • Finish
      90 90
      Ash and Dark Honey

We opened all 4 Ian Hunter Books tonight. Based on all 4 different Laphroaigs this Ian Hunter book nr 4 was by far the most tasty whisky out of them. Its quiet tropical, fruity with lots of sherry and the usual peat inside.

N: tropical fruit core mixed with sweet sherry, some wood, smoke is there, but also soft and creamy.
G: surprising amount of Laphroaig DNA, smoke, salty almonds, iodine, olives, oranges, quite fresh.
A: round and soft smoke like a blanket it covers you, very fine, lingers for a long time, salty chocolate.

      Laphroaig style.
Very fine sweet sherry scent paired with the typical Laphroaig smoke, dates, leather, in the background a little spray cream and iodine
    • Taste
      91 91
Like water, very smooth in the mouth, Laphroaig smoke, berries, elderberry
    • Finish
      93 93
Smoked bacon, marzipan, blackberries, a hint of smoke, subtle iodine, alcohol is well integrated.

Unfortunately disappointing. The nose promises a worthy bottling, in the mouth it cannot keep up. Somehow too thin and short finish, the sherry also seems artificial. Definitely not bad, but at the price I expect fireworks, which were more likely to happen with book 1 and 2 ...

Tried it on the booth in Milan at the festival in December 2022. Started the festival with this release. Distinct warm tones of sherry: prunes, spices in the form of cinnamon and cloves, smoke comes through them. I must say that the influence of wood (oak) seemed excessive to me, and in the taste sweet tones quickly disappear and are replaced by bitterness.

Beautiful long streaks run down the glass, a hearty sight to behold.

    Nose:

Typical Laphi smoke came out of the sample bottle at first, I wouldn't have expected the age.

In the glass then completely different.

Slightly sweet hints of smoke appear from time to time, but always recede into the background.

Oak and tobacco but also the sweetness of vanilla can be felt, the aromas alternate elegantly.

    Taste:

A gentleman. The 46% suits him well. Velvety and oily, he seizes the mouth. There it is again, the sweet vanilla. The oak settles on the tongue and brings with it a light, pleasant bitterness. Splendid.

    finish:

loooong. Individual aromas gradually disappear and the last smoke sticks to the tongue, here it is again the Laphi smoke, albeit very subtle.

A really wonderful malt that invites you to deal with it forever.

Unfortunately for me the price is beyond good and evil.

Old furniture, centuries-old villa, leather, cake, liquor, the smoke has almost completely - as expected - transformed into other aromas. Wonderful.
    • Taste
      94 94
Luckily, the sherry finish didn't harm the Laphi, instead embedding it in a bouquet of other fine nuances: the dram lies soft, oily, velvety on the tongue, no trace of alcohol, perfectly integrated. Marzipan, a hint of dark berries in maritime aromas, liqueur, Black Forest cake. Far away from the young smoke bombs, more intense than, for example, the 28J, really, really great malt!
    • Finish
      94 94
Long, the aromas only fade after a while, absolutely great. It's a pity that the price is in four figures, otherwise a few bottles would end up in the cellar :)

    • Nose
      92 92
heavy sweetness, manuga honey; very complex! Here the Olorosso sherry casks have definitely left a noticeable, interesting influence
    • Taste
      87 87
lots of wood, some wood stain, clear bitter substances from the oak; strong and intense
    • Finish
      84 84
a bit disappointing... the oak is very dominant and leaves a dry, bitter aftertaste on the tongue.

Had the opportunity to try that at a tasting last night. It's a very interesting expression that for once has no color added and still 46+% of alcohol after all these years. I must say in a blind tasting I would have had issues to identify it as a Laphroaig expression. The years have transformed the smoke into more subtle complex notes, hiding the distillery characte. It's very nice, don't get me wrong but I expected something different.
The nose is pleasant with taken back smoke and sherry notes, herbal and leathery notes, the taste is very complex and a drop of water opens up a kaleidoscope of flavors. the finish is long and rich.

It has a relatively oily viscosity and its bouquet is relatively intense. I have aromas of pleasant maritime peat smoke, vanilla, pipe tobacco, dried fruit, spicy oak, citrus, refreshing mint, creme brulee and herbal honey. deep and complex. Relatively dry in taste. The alcohol is very well integrated and it has a heavy body.
