Whisky Reviews for Arran 2001

  1. Tom na Gruagaich scored this whisky 90 points Connoisseur

I was tempted to send it towards the end of the twenties, especially since Glenfarclas has retained a certain degree of flexibility even in old age. This is dream material.
    • Nose
The first nose out of the bottle suggested a sweet sherry bomb, now in the glass I am (positively) surprised, because the sedate, tart sherry aromas, a lot of oak, light cigar box notes, sweetish, tart fruit notes, some leather dominate. Very classic, very mature and looks old. A little water lets the whisky bloom and brings a lot of sweet notes, sherry honey. Dreamlike.
    • Taste
very warm mouthfeel that has strength, tart sherry notes and spicy oak notes end in a slightly peppery spiciness. With water, sweeter, honey, sherry, but the bitter oak notes are still clearly in the upper hand.
    • Finish
warm, spicy, a lot of oak, a lot of tart dark chocolate, but the sweetish fruity note of the sherry always flashes through in the background, as a nuance without disturbing the oak load too much. With water, there is also a slightly sweeter note here, without throwing the overall concept overboard. Water is obviously good for him.

  2. KayMeertens scored this whisky 87 points Connoisseur

    • Nose
      87 87
Heavy, meaty, but not really sulphuric. Salted caramel, blackberry and pecan.
    • Taste
      88 88
Blackberry, caramel, wild cherry and mocha. Water adds a maltiness.
    • Finish
      87 87
      Wild cherry, mocha

  3. Igor scored this whisky 93 points Expert Senior

A cracking, first-class sherried whisky this one. Real belter, and an absolute champion in my book. Simply gorgeous!
    • Nose
Very complex. Intense fruity sweetness. Raspberries, plum jelly, apple juice, pastry, lilac?, oak wood, ground coffee, a touch of laundry soap in the background.
    • Taste
Piquant spice, dried cloves, black pepper, dry, obvious sherry influence (could be amontillado), grapey sour note, pineapple, mango?, confected dainties, assorted chocolates, liquorice sweets.
    • Finish
Long. Harmonious. Unhurried waves of flavours follow one after another, layer upon layer. Starting with sour fruits, it changes then by spicy sharp bits, eventually replaced by dark bitter chocolate.
