    Immediate impression: Bruichladdich - Sweet smell, delicate, nice positive oak spice backbone, sweet richness, balanced, 'whisky' old stylee - speaking for itself without cask dominance or masses of peat. Quieter than its Renaissance stablemate. I like this...

    Nose: complex, layered, fruity, crisp and vibrant, sweet maltiness, wisp of smoke, more fruits - hint of butyric acid (like the Rennaissance), mushrooms and oak spice.... the bourbon casks have done their job!

    Taste: the arrival is positive, sweet but bitter/ dry too, assertive nip due to the 46% - savoury almost, oak spices ride solidly into the finish - very  good length just tending towards walnut notes at the end.

    With water: Nose settles and becomes dynamic: same sweetness, but tamed by damp wood, spice recedes - merest hint of peat/ smoke - citrus (ripe lemon), pears - later apples. yep water brings out fruitiness, also a touch of putty/ sage (hubba bubba bubble gum?!)?

    Worth looking out for in the Auctions if you can find it

    Olivier, our reporter on Islay, just tasted the two new Bruichladdichs. They seem to have it good over there...Bruichladdich 1998/2011 ’18.06.98 Ancien Régime’ (46%, OB, Feis Ile, 2500 bottles)  Gold colour. Discreet bourbon cask influence. Toffee nose, elegant with nice fruit and vanilla. Great all rounder, medium length, it does go back to a style much lobed from this distillery: delicious round easy drinking with nice cask influence and no tannins. The end of an era. 88 points.

    Tasting Notes by Jim McEwan, head distiller;

    Character: Medium weight and beautifully balanced. The texture has a lubricity that coats the palate with a mellow warm silkiness which caresses and stimulates each of the myriad of receptor cells.

    Colour: Golden Nectar

    Nose: Opens on peach melba with a sprinkling of dried coconut followed by more soft fruit notes, jelly beans. It’s an olfactory fruit bomb. As it continues, sugar almonds and orange and lemon syrupy sweet aromas join the party. Once the fruit settles down a little, the superb notes and flavours of American oak add their vanilla fudge and toasted hazelnut flavours with a dash of bourbon from a previous life.

    Palate: It’s the mellowness of this oak that creates a bubble in which all the aromatics and taste sensations are held lovingly. After approximately 10 minutes a note of soft banana on toasted rye bread comes on board and the bubble starts to rise, which is does serenely, and is caught in the slipstream of a warm Westerly sea breeze which uplifts the notes of the wild flowers and heather covered hills as they rise from the glass.

    Finish: Distilled essence! This Champagne of Islay will stimulate and captivate not only your senses, but your heart. Enjoy the flight; you have just been upgraded to first class with our compliments!

    Mood: Laid back. Sunny, summer afternoon.
