  1. Lorion scored this whisky 85 points Connoisseur

I really like the whisky. The cask strength does him a lot of good! 85 points.
    • Nose
A very pleasant nose. Sherry, wood, malt - all at once. And it's packed with power and energy without being boisterous. Vinous.
    • Taste
Full and sparkling. Red fruits, very herbal honey.
    • Finish
Medium to long, fruity and spicy.

91 points because the bottling is a price-performance monster. The strength of the alcohol suits the bottling fantastically.

A nice sherry Bunnahabhain! I even have brief moments that remind me of an above average Glenfarclas Family Cask, along with the signature Bunna maritime flavors. Wonderful!
Excellent value for money these days at €90. There is a small surcharge for the rating. The quality can definitely hold a candle to a sherry whisky that is twice as expensive.
But it is not a miracle of complexity.

I tried diluting it with water because it also has a bit of spiciness, but then unfortunately it loses its “funk”.
    • Nose
      89 89
pure sea breeze. Picnic on the beach with red wine and cinnamon Christmas cookies.
    • Taste
      91 91
Chocolate, tobacco (cigar), black cherries. Sweet (not too sweet) and dry. I'm guessing a lot of Oloroso. Oily. cinnamon and marzipan. Dark fruit compote. Some spice and wood (European oak). A little bit of salt.
    • Finish
      90 90
Long lasting with tobacco and some European oak. The (good) salty and maritime impression remains, like after a day at the beach - only without salt everywhere in the clothes and shoes.

I tasted it with very high expectations.
    Maybe these were too high.
I was very eager to capture and taste the bottling, which now seems to be consistently aged in sherry casks.
Fed him side by side with batch 1.
    • Nose
      85 85
      Very spicy.
      Strong modern sherry cask influence.
There is a menthol note along with spices such as cloves and nutmeg (I had noticed less cinnamon).
The alcohol is not 100% well integrated here.
Some oak wood tones resonate in the background.
What I'm missing, especially compared to batch-1, is the sea influence. No maritime notes recognizable.
batch 1 was more complex, a little less bulky and had more island character. Batch 1 seemed a little more pleasant and a little sweeter to me.
    • Taste
      86 86
That's already in the direction of sherry bomb. However, I miss the dried fruit and, in relation to Bunnahabhain, the maritime character.
      Lots of spices again.
      There is some cherry fruitiness.
      Very massive and strong.
The alcohol is more integrated at this level, but I felt compelled to add three drops of water.
Batch 1 did not do this.
There are some nutty nuances in batch 2.
    • Finish
      86 86
      medium length
Batch 1 again showed an emergence of slightly different facets. Batch 2 ends without any change.
The alcohol is easy to bear here.

Conclusion: batch 1 still: 88 points, batch 2: 86 points with a downward trend. Still a good whisky nonetheless.

I am pleased that the second batch of the strong Bunna 12 was so successful. Batch No. 2 is obviously darker and seems a bit more pleasing right away, but ultimately I find the first batch a bit more multifaceted and interesting when it comes to exploring and, if you have the time, to focus on the flavors to concentrate. Both batches are undoubtedly delicious.
    • Nose
      88 88
Extremely sweet and dark fruity. Appears lightly perfumed. The alcohol is well integrated.
Crushed vanilla pod, malt, caramel, milk chocolate, pickled cherries, prunes, wild strawberries, rum raisins, dried orange slices, persipan, salt flowers, fine oak spice. As it gets warmer, lighter, slightly gummy, tropical fruit aromas are added.
    • Taste
      88 88
Powerful and peppery at the start. Very nice and creamy in the mouth. The alcohol is well integrated. You only need water to play.
Caramel, dried oranges and figs, dried apricots, rum raisins, dark chocolate, white pepper, malt, cocktail cherries, walnuts, maple syrup, beechnuts, spicy oak.
    • Finish
      87 87
Medium length finish, very slightly dry. Strong oak, dried oranges, aniseed, grapefruit, pickled cherries.

I bought last year"s release and liked it but wasn't thrilled. This year is considerably more impressive. Some really great casks have been used here; I get similar notes to an older vintage glendronach 18 I have open. Scotch mist like nothing I've ever seen on addition of water. Diluted to 46% and tasted side by side with the standard 12 Year Old, the difference is clear. Debatable whether it's worth double but if you're a big fan of Bunnahabhain I think this is worth buying a bottle of to experience; it feels like quite a special release.

  13. BehindSpace scored this whisky 83 points Connoisseur

pretty solid casks, but too young-ish for my personal taste

better than batch 1, but I really can't unterstand all the 90+ ratings.

In comparison this batch is less musty, more fruity, overall more dark-ish

A nice Bunna with a lot of (modern) first fill sherry influence. I don't really understand all the 90+ ratings but to each their own. Needs water, otherwise it's quite sharp on the palate, but even a few drops develop a beautiful Scotch mist - which is quite amazing for such a high ABV whisky.

Taste unfortunately lacks smell. It does not taste like an old school sherry cask matured Whisky, instead again more on the modern site of it.
Indeed it reminds me of one of the latest Glenallachie expressions.

Bunnahabhain 12-year-old, 56.6% NC NCF CS
My favorite sherried island malt in cask strength form.
Everything from the 12 turned up to 11 in a more complex, integrated form.
    Fantastic whisky.
    • Nose
      89 89
rich red fruit, meaty, ashy, salty, coastal, cotton candy, complex malty sweetness, cinnamon, 65% dark chocolate, medium roast espresso, basil

Very well presented, but not significantly better than the 12-year-old. A hint more complex and more full in nature due to the ethanol content. Great nonetheless.
    • Taste
      90 90
rich currant, dried black cherry, dark chocolate, walnut, nutmeg, salty, lemon oil, complex, herbal, malty sweetness, maple syrup, charred oak

Flavors evolve over time and integrate on the palate in a way that Islay whisky rarely does for me. I'd hold this one on the tongue for at least 30 seconds to experience it. Phenomenal on the palate.
    • Finish
      90 90
dry, slightly tannic, saline, olive brine, herbal, musty, rum-y, Red Hots, rich, heavy, toasted grains, long

Fantastic finish. This rivals a lot of old-world malts such as Springbank and Benromach CS.

Direct comparison to Batch 1 - 2021 Edition WID: 194125

In front - like the 2021 version, no sulfur or unpleasant bad notes

    Colour:
    B2 - is noticeably darker

    Nose:
B2 - intense sherry, fruitier and sweeter. No alcoholic note

Taste: B2 - sherry without end, darker fruits, the 56% feel wonderfully soft. I find the 55% of B1 more alcoholic

    finish:
also fruitier and sweeter, but then becomes a bit bitter and remains a bit astringent

    With water:
How to imagine a really great batch of the "normal" 12 Bunna with even more rump. Great! The furry finish gets better with water. But the taste suffers a bit. This also makes the whisky very cloudy and even more exciting. Similar to WID: 114761

Which one is better - well - that depends on personal taste.

I like both - on some days the 2021 and on others the 2022. In between I like something completely different.

I am already looking forward to the next few weeks and will be happy to try the 2022 version several times.

Great what Bunna has brought to the market here as an original bottling.

This bottling will be sold again in a few days. However, the experience of the 2021 version shows the following - after just a few months, the bottles in the auctions are available again at almost the recommended retail price and shortly before the 2022 version was released, the 2021 versions were suddenly available again from many retailers. Therefore - wait and see - everyone who wants to buy such a bottle will get one. Don't pay too much and prefer to wait.
